turning their faces / bodies 180 degrees, so that for the scene they show their back?

The characters that come with CTA4 don't include back facing views. However, you can certainly create a back facing custom character if you want.

To actually make your character walk from foreground to background (or background to foreground)) is to keyframe your character's position along the z-axis. So, for example, you could switch to 3D View (top toolbar) and then move your character back in equal increments every 100 frames or so to give a smooth walk back or forward towards the camera (see below). You can then combine this with a suitable walk motion to complete the animation.
