Changing texture resolution is not going to do any good other than making closeup look washed out. You need to tile UV in UV settings.
And that has to be done to every texture slot separatelly - Base Color, Opacity, Bump and the rest if they are not solid
(or click "Affect all channels" before changing tiling of Base Color texture).
Also make sure to perform that on frame 1 of the timeline as tiling is animated.

But make sure the chains is a separate material/texture from belts. Otherwise belts would be tiled as well.

My problem is that I cannot make it look realistic. Do you take an image of chain mail and copy it over the UV?

That's a big question.  Making good-looking materials is both art and science.

In simple terms, you need a "complete material," with several texture channels populated.  The exact texture names will change if you're using the Traditional or PBI shader, but here's an example of what I'm talking about:
- Diffuse (Base Color) texture for the basic color
- Opacity to make the holes
- Bump (Normal) to give some "rounded" appearance to the chain mail
- Specular (or Metallic) to give some shiny highlights
- Ambient Occlusion to help with the shadows in the crevaces

You'll also start to get into things like how your textures align with your UV map, such as how the direction of the "pattern" of the material aligns with the model.  Consider a striped shirt..  a simple striped pattern applied over the entire UV map might result in horizontal strips on the torso, but stripes that go at some odd diagonal direction on the arms.  So either portions of the texture maps, or the UV map, need to be adjusted to make the stripes go in the correct direction on different parts of the shirt.

But back to the material itself, in addition to simply using the texture maps, you could also search for a chain mail "Substance" which has all those channels, and would probably allow you to easily adjust things like "Old or new" (shiny or rusty) and "steel or bronze."

iClone 7... Character Creator... Substance Designer/Painter... Blender... Audacity...
Desktop (homebuilt) - Windows 10, Ryzen 9 3900x CPU, GTX 1080 GPU (8GB), 32GB RAM, Asus X570 Pro motherboard, 2TB SSD, terabytes of disk space, dual  monitors.
Laptop - Windows 10, MSI GS63VR STEALTH-252, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 (6GB), 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD

I believe that Character Creator comes with a chain mail Substance material. That would be the preferred way to do this.
