The last few days i played around lighting setups that do well with both iClone native and Iray renderer.
Additionally i tried to find out how i can get minimal rendering times while preserving as much detail as needed to justify Iray.

I normally render stills at 1500 iterations without de-noise. Here's how this character looks.
Note: 10 minutes per frame.

And now with only 300 iterations, but de-noise starting at 290. Time was 3.5 minutes then.

As it turns out, a bit of skin detail gets lost, and also some meticulous reflections.

When it comes to full room shots, the difference between the number of iterations is much higher. The details of surfaces like the ground or drywalls get lost at 500 iterations and below.
In that case, native renderer gives better results at much faster render times.
On the other hand, Iray has some impressive behaviours when it comes to lighting and reflections. It is just physically correct.
That's why i had to remove the spotlights and replace them with emissive surfaces for the lights.
The mirror is only possible in Iray as such.

The next images are all rendered in Iray with 500 iterations, de-noise starting at 490 and nominal illuminance at 150 (it gives a bit more light).

A lot of time and effort goes into this. I don't know it it's worth it.
Something that hinders me from doing movies :|

Nice "mirror" scene!
I am still on IC 7.3, no Iray tested yet.
Sadly animations would take a lot of render time...

Thanks for your comments.
Well, there is much 'room' for improvements...

A lot of times Iray's realism comes in the way when trying to combine IBL and lights.

For example, Iray renders iClone lights (spotlight, point light), even if they are hidden.
In addition, also the IBL works different in Iray then in iClone realtime.
The workaround is to either move the physical lights out of the view, or make sure they are not covered by another surface.
The IBL is a different thing. While in iClone, it illuminates the whole scene, in Iray it illuminates only something that it 'reaches', from a phyical viewpoint.

So it is very difficult to find a setup that works with both.
I'm posting this while i'm learning. If the renders are looking good to you, i appreciate it.
Although i know this is amateurish work, i am really happy with some of the results.

Finally, only IBL used for the outside lighting, like it should be :)

I always render 500 iterations now.
BTW: I may have to change texure size from 2048 to 1024k soon, or find another way to reduce GPU usage...

I am continuing my lighting and reflections Iray tests at my Loft scene.

Please apologize for any issues you may have noticed at the previous images.
I learned a lot in the last days and weeks, and i realize that i've done some things very wrong.

This is rendered with 1000 iterations to preserve some details at a low-light 'situation'.

76% of original size (was 665x19) - Click to enlargehttps://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/ddba118a-ecbc-4d67-95e2-f378.png

Again, 1000 iteratations.

76% of original size (was 665x19) - Click to enlargehttps://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/a1f20ba3-c942-49fc-ba72-7dea.png

And the same camera with 500 iterations.

Not that i see a prominent difference, and there is not much light in the end...
