Forgive me if this has already been talked about, but I only have 'mobile' phone contact with the forum until the end of February...
Today I was able to (successfully) update to the new Iray for iClone' on my laptop. My first test was simply 1 second, (the first 24 frames) of the *Loft scene*. Upon 'replay' I noticed 'flickering' due to the inherent 'single rendered frame' Iray 'uniqueness' that needs (somehow) to be addressed. How does one compensate for such flickering ? .... thankyou !!!  :)

Edit: I'm guessing that some sort of 'temporal filtering' is needed to reduce the flicker, but I can't see such a control available in the Iray settings, so does that mean smoothing would have to be done in post production? ...

Please be patient with me ..... I don't always 'get it' the first time 'round - not even the 2nd time! :(  - yikes! ...

There is an Iray setting called De-Noise:

Set it to become active one or two iterations before the final iteration. So if have rendering set to 150 iterations, I set the De-Noise to 149. It loses some detail so it is a trade off.

With the loft scene something else may be going on as well, I would have to check. For example, Iray is more sensitive to properly textured items in your scene.

I just did a 30-frame render myself and there are indeed fluctuations that shouldn't be there. So that will require some further investigation.

@Job ... My test included the noise reduction you're speaking of. What I'm seeing is not noise, but more like exposure level changes. If you imagine taking a sequence of photos, each with slightly different exposure settings, then viewing their 'replay' in rapid succession, then that's the sort of 'look' I'm seeing. It's *fluctuations* due to Iray variations on each frame. ie: The frames are not 'uniform'. I don't know whether it's just my observations, but I do recall someone making mention of this as a likely *issue* when it comes to rendering Iray *motion* rather than just a single frame (photo image).

Anyway, I loaded the PNG image sequence into Vegas and applied a 'Spacial Filter' and it pretty much solved the problem. The only 'downside' being that you introduce some blurring which is more noticeable the faster the camera move is ... But if anyone on the forum was to render the first 24 (or 30) frames of the Loft Scene (ie: set your 'range' to 48 or 60), do an Iray render, then view the replay, -you'll see what I mean .. (looping the replay helps with viewing this short render).

That would be me! ;)

Try rendering it again without the noise reduction - it's a likely culprit.  From what I've seen, the result will be less flickery but will probably have 'static grain' which is also undesirable.

Ahh - OK Mark - well I can try more testing either later today or tomorrow, but what you say does make sense .... But of course the downside to not using the noise filter - is all those extra passes needed for each frame to reduce the static noise.  :(

Maybe "us."  :)

I have stated that some "noise" which we might not notice in single-frame images will become objectional in a video because we will easily detect frame-to-frame differences.  My comment was written to contradict someone who thought you could render animation frames more quickly that still.  I presented an opposing view.  Unless you are going to do extreme (and I mean "extreme") quality renders, I believe that for most people here, you are likely to need MORE ITERATIONS FOR ACCEPTABLE VIDEO FRAMES than for standalone images.

I have to ask a question.
Steve, what rendering mode are you using? Photoreal or Interactive. I tested both with Loft scene. Both have problems with Loft Scene. But those are two different problems cause by two different issues.
I'll wait for an answer before elaborating :)

@4u2ges .... I used 'interactive' simply because I was endeavouring to be 'kind' to my 1070 card (reduce demand). But to be honest, I haven't played with too many settings so far. Keen to hear what your thoughts are ...

@Dennis - sorry, - thanks for your thoughts too :)
