In Character Creator, I cannot select the 3D head icon at the top which should "generating head from photo." I assume this should do the same thing that is done in CrazyTalk which is to generate a 3D morph/head from a photo. Why is it not selectable? Can I create head models from photos in Character Creator or do I have to do that in CrazyTalk?

I see in the manual that this button might simply launch Crazy Talk 8 ("Use this command to launch Reallusion CrazyTalk 8 and load photo(s) to create a new head."). So I guess I can just go there on my own? I still don't understand why this option isn't available? I wonder if it's because I don't have the right software version or update, but I am running CC v3.02, which I think is the Pipeline version.

You will need Crazytalk 8 Pipeline for this feature. It can't be done in Character Creator alone.

That seems like a sizable gap for a "standalone" chracter creation application.  :Whistling:
Are there any plans to address that gap?

Having this feature built in or via a CC3 plug-in is under consideration for future upgrades but no final decision has been made yet. For now CrazyTalk 8 Pipeline remains the only way to create CC heads from photos.

Using ONLY RL software.

You can, of course, generate very nice heads (some say there is no finer) from photos using FaceGen Artist, for Daz avatars.  Then these avatars can be brought in via Transformer to CC3.  Finally, they can be saved out separately in iClone (I document this process in a video tutorial).  Since Daz is free you're only talking about the cost of FaceGen Artist but you would have to weigh that against buying CT8 Pipeline, the convenience of both workflows, as well as quality (honestly I've never used FaceGen Artist, but I have done a lot of heads via CT8.  I think they are fine -- not great, but certainly usable.  Someday I'm going to try FaceGen Artist to see how it compares).

I can confirm Mike's comments. I have been a long-term FaceGen user and FaceGen Artist lets you create heads from photos that can then be exported to DAZ as head morph with associated textures. Within FG Artist there are myriad morph sliders to refine the head.

In DAZ you then apply the morph and replace the textures and then export the thing in the usual way. It works very well. For G8 export you need FG Artist Pro ($135).  Here is an example of what I created just the other day using that process.

More in the Show Case thread.

IMO, instead of RL trying to create their own, it would make more sense to have Singular Inversions create an export option similar to the one for DAZ.
