There are so many options for this and it depends on your abilities. and the versions you own
Here is a couple of quick thoughts.

If the tree is a bunch of props grouped together then ungrouping them and moving one set of the props away from the other set when the character chops it.
If the tree isn't a group of props then you might me able to send it to 3DXchange, export the tree as OBJ, load it into Blender and cut the tree into 2 parts there.
Then import them back int 3DXchage and send them back to iclone

If you don't have modelling skills then you could put 2 trees into your scene and use opacity maps to have the top half from 1 of the trees and the bottom half on the second tree.
Position them together so they look like one tree. Then when the tree gets chopped pull them away from each other so it looks like it got chopped in half.
Hope the way I described that makes sense?

The second option - two trees and some opacity - sounds very practical.
But you will have a hollow cylinder, so you will also need to "cap" the stump and the log.  You could simply insert a disk (very short cylinder) as a plug, and texture it to look like the rings of a tree.

Like many things, you can probably avoid showing a lot of the detail.  Use your camera angles.
Do the first swing or two.
Then do a medium shot of the guy chopping (waist and higher).
Change angles, but focus more on the man.
Wide (distant) shot, see the tree fall.
Etc.

You most likely don't need a close-up of the actual, splintery, chopped portion of the tree.
Unless that is important for some reason, in which case you'll need a more "expensive" solution.

Good luck.
Have fun.
I hope you can share a clip of the result with us.

Oh yes please, I would like to see your result too, if you don't mind showing it.
Maybe even a brief description of the actual steps you took.

This idea on chopping trees is not something I have tried myself so would be good to see whether it is actually affective.
I have done it with other things but not chopping trees

thank you guys for you wonderful solutions. i am sure i will come up with one of them doing a great job and i will post the result defiantly.
however i have another issue with another scene where i would like a net to fall on a lion i have and cover it, as if it has caught it, or have a prepared ambushed net catch the lion and lift it up in the net in which the lion is caught.  any idea how i can achieve this scene in iclone 7??

Sorry, only just seen your reply now.

Difficult to suggest because its not my project so I don't know what might work based on the contents your using
However, one thought that comes to mind for doing that would be with physics applied to your net cache to film it covering the lion.
So maybe that would be my first project for this part of the video. The lion getting covered by the cloth.

I have included a video (at the bottom) of Marks from his SmallWStudio utube chanel that shows the basics of what I mean in case your not sure of that.
By the way. He has a lot of great tutorials that shows ways of creating animated scenes that may help you to watch.

For lifting the captured lion I might make a second project with the lion positioned inside of and linked to a content shaped like the cloth lifting the lion.
That way pulling that content up will also pull the lion up and you shaping the lions body with the lions 'edit motion layer' so it looks caught in the cloth content.
Geez im getting old to explain things LOL

Anyway, I would then use the outputs from those 2 projects (and most likely many other projects) in my video editor, I use hitfilm pro, to put the entire video together
One of the reasons I do things like that as separate projects because its easier to change things when its not all in 1 project without affecting the animations that come after the one I am adjusting.
Creating the lion getting covered/captured by the cloth and then the lion getting lifted as separate projects makes sense to me because your likely to have camera changes between those two parts of the scene anyway. Having them as separate projects also makes it easier to use a set of contents to do the first part of the scene and a different set of contents in the second part of the scene that look similar enough.

As I said, Its difficult to say exactly what to do when its not my project. But these are just some thoughts that might help you do what you intend.
Hope so anyway. Ultimately, you will need to decide how to do it.

I am surprised I overlooked your "lion" comments.

I'm trying to picture in my head what I think you're picturing your head...  and I wonder if some "morphs" might be helpful.  I wonder how much motion will be required to "sell" the illusion.

For a long time, learning how to create morph targets was something low down on my To Do list.  I finally did it recently, it was far easier than I thought.

Ditto on the morphs being so easy.
When I started with the waves I was impressed how simple it was to do them. Obviously you need to be able to create 3D models but using them to do morphs is really simple.
And using morphing for doing animations like this is something I have been working on.
I am working on doing a character getting in and out of bed from under the sheets. I am also working on animating a lasso for my wonder woman character to throw and capture a target.
Another one I am very close to publishing is a blind that can be pulled up and down (part of a pack with more than just that)
Another one I am working on is a snake sliding along the ground for my harry potter video. Actually most of what I have said for morphing is for my harry potter fan fiction video
