Hi, I've been getting used to using the software but I can't figure out how to control the head and eyes whilst the characters are talking... it would be nice if I could make then nod or roll their eyes on cue

Try to Use the face puppet tool  and select head movement and the eyes and  practice the expressions you want to use with preview mode and move the mouse for  your desired effect .Set the record speed to 50% and move in time to what ever cues you have be it music  vocals are reactions . Also tinker with the settings for expression strentha and viseme strength. Also if you get a set of expression you like and want to work with in future .Go to collect clip and drag over the time line and save the animation to motion plus and that way you can build up a library of expressions  in no time . Just keep experimenting
