I could have sworn this came up in another topic, but I can't find it no matter how I search.

Is CT8 limited to 1k texture sizes for head textures exported?  That's all I'm getting (1024x1024) and I could have SWORN it would make larger textures but I can find nothing in the settings or preferences to change the size that is exported.

If so, that's pretty piss poor -- can something be done about this?

If you export to RLHead you will find the textures are 2048 x 2048. However if you send directly to Character Creator the textures will default to 1024 x 1024.

Ah, that's it, then.  I need to remember that (file that in my old brain, because it is NOT intuitive).

That's a good place to make an update (in either CT or CC or both).

1k?  Yes, that should be addressed.

Should default to the current face resolution, with an option to override.
Would be great to support 4k.

If you open the Appearance Editor in CC, you can set the texture size to 2048x2028. In CC the texture size is determined by whatever the default is in AE and that happens to be 1024x1024 for body and head. So it's not a CT setting as such, but the default in CC.

Even if you apply an RLHead in CC, the default texture size will still be 1024x1024, which is the so-called real-time default. This took me some time to figure out...

The same head applied in iClone will give you the full resolution (currently 2048x2048).

Just so I understand, Ani -- I create a head in CT.  I export it and (theoretically) the map size inside that head is 2K.  I bring it into CC and you're saying it will still default to 1K until I go into the texture editor to change it?  Does that mean it loses resolution when imported in?  (Because I ALWAYS change the res inside of CC and, not only that, when I export the avatar I pick "Best Quality" which also changes it).  Or are you saying it will just be 1K if I save it without changing it otherwise?

I'm trying to figure out how to preserve those 2K face maps.  If I have to first bring the head into iClone and then save the map out and reload it back into CC after I change the settings in AE I can do it, but I'd rather not jump through those hoops if I don't have to.

I'm trying to figure out how to preserve those 2K face maps.  If I have to first bring the head into iClone and then save the map out and reload it back into CC after I change the settings in AE I can do it, but I'd rather not jump through those hoops if I don't have to.

The Appearance Editor dynamically adjusts the resolution of the maps as they then appear in the Material section (so your regular Diffuse, etc.), which are like the output of the AE. It's important to realize that AE is not a texture editor. It uses textures as input, but then you can add all kinds of things such as freckles to the face, for example. The combined output then appears as a map in the Material (or Textures) section.

So if the original size is 2048x2048, and the AE output is set to 2048x2048 then you will have no quality loss. The texture map is an input to AE as it were and you then determine the output you want. This is a similar mechanism that's used when exporting as iAvatar, where you can set the texture size for the output, but this will not change the original texture.

What I often do is edit in AE at a lower resolution and then set the size to 2048x2048 for the final output, because things become kind of sluggish at max resolution.

I hope this clarifies it.
