Stop motion films are a great art form. But it must be a pain in the neck to use physical models and cameras to take thousands upon thousands of pictures to make one.

Is it possible to either have a way to create stop motion or have a button (l like buttons:)) to convert the smoother iClone motions into stop motions? If it is possible, it will provide an alternative to the stop motion apps out there that require real cameras and real models. Who knows, maybe a new market segment for iClone.

Hi David

One way I suppose you could do this is to export as a TGA sequence. Take out some of the tga files and import into Pop Video. Once you have a Pop Video drag it onto a flat plane in iClone and then export that movie and it will look like what you are after ( I think if this makes sense to you LOL). Of course another way depending on what you are after is using the transform postions if it were just to get things moving around like the Magic Roundabout effect ( giving my age away here talking about Florence, Dougal and Co )

I am sure there will be others coming in and giving you other ways to do this but this is what came straight to mind. The best person to advise you on this would probably be Cricky. I bet he has produced something like this.

Hope this helps

Thanks Popeye.

I don't have an immediate stop motion project yet. I saw a neat stop motion animation today and remembered some months ago I tried to do stop motion using iClone. I abandoned it once I realized I would have to manually delete a few frames per every few frames. I thought it will be neat if iClone has a button to automatically delete some frames at the right position to make it look like stop motion. I also think that a model doing stop motion moves with stiffer legs and arms. But maybe that's not true or not necessary.

I think your suggestion of getting it out to image sequence first will make it easier to do the deletion. So if iClone can't do the stop motion and I want to give stop animation another try, I will try it your way. Let's see if anyone else has any suggestions.

Hi David. Another possibility would be to use your video editor. Import an iClone video and then save required shots as jpegs along the length of the video. I'm going to have a go at this myself over the Christmas break if I get time. I think it could look really neat especially if the finished product was cartoonised.

I would like to point out that stop motion animation is not necessarily jerky or characterized by a reduced frame rate.  Think of the many excellent clay-mation movies (Wallace and Gromit, etc.) and the recent Fantastic Mr. Fox.

EDIT: More stop motion! This was just brought to my attention: http://awards.filminfocus.com/#/coraline/
