IMPORTANT NOTE: iClone 7 is defaulted to be installed in C drive. If you want to free more space for your future projects, we recommend you to redirect the installation path to D drive.

Physically-Based Render (PBR) 
It is the same technology that powers today's AAA video games and high-end renderers.
By defining the base color, roughness and metallic texture, iClone 7 allow you to create models or constants which could effectively simulate the albedo, gloss, and reflectivity of real-world materials.

Global Illumination (GI)
Utilizing NVIDIA's leading real-time Voxel Cone Tracing Technology, iClone 7 significantly improves visual system by including secondary light reflections over Diffuse and Specular surfaces.


By utilizing GI, we highly improve the realism of the construction materials, you could now find our prop templates which could be used as architectural purposes:

Real Camera System 

iClone 7 has a fully customizable camera system match the industry standard, so you can accurately simulate real-world cinematography. Compatibility is key with flawless import & export of Camera data between 3D and video tracking tools.


Multi camera & Cam Switch

You can freely manage up to 30 different camera using the Camera Switchtrack in the timeline, and you can edit scenes by using the Preview Camera while at the same time using the Mini Viewport to track how it appears in other cameras. You may even ease-in-out animate cameras with motion curves, set your focus range to create DOF effects, or alter the lens for dynamic vertigo results.

Pro facial Animation  
To fully deliver facial movement details for mouth, cheeks and eyes, CC Characters' facial morph count increased from 30 to 60 morphs. Face Key editing now also enhanced to three level, including facial muscle nodes, a library of expression presets, and detailed blend shape slider adjustment.

Morph Animation Timeline Editing 
The Morph Manager edits morph groups from a hierarchical model. Import OBJ morphs from 3D modeling or sculpting tools. Link selected morphs to adjust them individually using the iClone 7 Morph Manage interface.

Lookup Table (LUT) for color grading
LUT is a way to use a mapping texture to swap out on-screen pixel color swatch. Take advantage of a more convenient image conversation with better performance and more professional results.

Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA)
With Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA), you could smooth out the jagged edges in the viewport.
By using our Hotkey Shift+T, you could quickly switch ON and OFF the TAA function.

IBL Image Switch
In iClone 7, there is several ways to switch IBL image:
Go to Stage > Atmosphere  > HDRI, you could find a library of built in IBL samples; you can access the original HDRI image 
Go to Media > Texture > IBL, you could directly drag in image to the Visual IBL thumb image area to replace it.

IBL Image Track 
Add New IBLClip function can be applied to animate the IBL effect because PBR uses IBL for its specular contribution. By using different IBL images, one can achieve better visual results . 
Now, iClone 7 also allows animated IBL Images. By adding an IBL clip to the desired track, you can create the results below:



Bake IBL
In iClone 7, you can use Bake IBL function to create a custom IBLimage. Once the Bake IBLfunction is activated the current scene state will be used to create an accurate image of the current environment.

III. FEATURES ENHANCEMENT IN CC, 3DXCHANGE & INDIGO

Character Creator Compatible Files.

A newly enhanced feature in iClone 7 allows you to access CC Content directly including 
ccAcc, ccCloth, ccHair, ccGloves etc.
You can now use CC items through dragging directly from CC gallery, or just open the folder in iClone 7

Note: All CC Assets are vailable as native format to iClone, you can directly load them from iClone, only CCProject is not included.

The new Character Creator 2.0 (CC2) comes with updated visuals for industry standard PBR shaders, allowing users to import PBR textures made with 3D paint tools like Substance Painter, 3D Coat, or Quixel. Users can now export their Character Creator assets to iClone 7, Unreal, Unity , or Sketchfab with the same PBR visual quality.

3DXchange Enhancements

To better support the files exchange between iClone7 and other 3D power tools, Reallusion also enhance some features of 3DXchange
1. Directly export FBX files from iClone7 without opening 3DXchange. 
2. Camera IN & OUT (via FBX from iClone7):  iClone Camera is now inter-operable with other mainstream 3D software.
3. Multiple selection of files for exporting including props, scene, lighting , camera, and avatars etc To know more, go here!>



4. Morph Creator (integrated in iClone7):
  • Freely build custom morphs for props and characters via OBJ and iAvatar files to make morph targets. To know more, go here!>




To help iClone 7 users in learning about more on facial expression, we also specially invited the original author of the new facial system to do the tutorial. For more, please refer to Learning Center.

Indigo Render Plugin Enhancements
  • Compatible with iClone 7
    • Materials supports Traditional Shader type only 
    • Note: Indigo Material Preset "Auto-Convert" is not for PBR Material Shader Type, it will use the Traditional shader instead. 
  • Compatible with Real Camera System, and scene render that can send data directly into indigo where the camera views are identical (Fit Render Region>Fir FOV can be either horizontal or vertical)  's camera view.
     
  • Dummy objects will be ignored by the Indigo renderer. use the new emit GI dummy feature to render dummy objects in indigo.
  • Shadow casters are ignored by the indigo renderer.
  • Support for IBL into indigo as Background Settings> Environment Map. However, only the first fame us supported and not the IBL animation.
  • When rendering IBL scene, all information of IBL will sent to Indigo directly including the background settings, environment type and environment map
Note: Indigo Material Preset "Auto-Convert" is not for PBR Material Shader Type, it will use the Traditional shader instead.

IV. OTHER FEATURES ENHANCEMENT:

MUSCLE MORPH 
The best demonstration for creating muscle morph is by our sample projects in our embedded content.

SHADOW PASS
It is another enhance features in iClone 7, with the following key Effects:

Shadow Casting
Emissive lighting (material Glow / Self Illumination and Particle effects) along with lights do not cast shadows.
Now you can pair up Shadow Caster with these types of shadowless lighting to better their authenticity.





Darken Shadow on Shadow Map Strength
The Darken Shadow feature is involved with three control sliders, Strength, Global Darkness Multiplier and Darkness for each light.
By controlling the slider, you could create a darken shadow even in a dark area.






Matte Shadow on Invisible Mesh Plane
With the Matte Shadow feature in iClone 7, you could easily fix an issue with iClone 6's floor-less environment not receiving cast shadows.
By using this feature, you can cast shadow on any invisible mesh regardless of its shape.






Shadow Only Lights

The following illustration shows that no shadows are produced from an emissive lighting scheme:


When a spotlight is added to fill in the shadows, the entire scene can be overly bright.


HDR Enhancement 
iClone 7 has fixed the flicking and Red Halo issues which incurs during iClone 6, now the HDR function is stabilized and with a better visual enhancement:

In addition, the HDR Glare Spike length now can be adjusted to achieve a subtle glaring effect.
Reason: When adjusting the Glare Strength, the glare spikes will also lengthen as there was no way to separate the effect from the control.
Now the glare spike lengths can be adjusted independently from the glare strength control.

AO Enhancement
To get a crisp and precise AO result, iClone 7 use the new screen-space based HBAO+ (Enhanced Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion) algorithm.
iClone 7 now has a finer details when comparing with iClone 6

New wide aspect ratio thumbnails for Atmosphere and HDRI files

Improved the Loading Time for HDRI (.hdr .exr) Files

Substances
The loading time in applying substance content has been significantly reduced.

Adjust Color
Texture maps adjustments now come in the form of a dockable panel for more convenient access. 
In addition, you can directly drag a texture map to their corresponding thumbnail to apply that texture.

By double right click on texture channel  icon, you could now adjust color easily.


New Flip Normal Y for Normal map channel

  • If one discovers that the normals Y of an object is incorrect, then toggle Modify >  Texture Settling > Flip Normal Y to redirect the normals in vertical direction.
  • When a (*.sbsar) file is imported, the default view port settings will be the same as Substance Player.

UI Enhancements
  • The setting of show and hide for dummy objects is originally be set under preferences, but now it would be set under Project Settings. (Alternatively, you could use short cut key - Ctrl +D to show or hide the dummy objects)
  • The format of Preview render image will follow the setting of Image Export, no longer just in BMP format.
  • Double click on slider to resume the slider parameters on all modules.
  • File saving will add additional thumbnail details (PBR and version iClone number):
a. PBR icon.
b. iClone version that the file is saved under.

Other Visual Enhancements


In previous version of iClone, there is some negative impact causing by the super sampling render.

Causes of disparity in the Visual Effects:
  • The frame export size is bigger than the viewport size.  The larger the difference, the more severe is the discrepancy.
  • When using supersampling under Render > Render Quality > Final Render: Super Sampling is enabled in order to inhibit the effects of screen flickering when executing Export Video.  However, this has the negative side effect of weakening the onscreen Visual Effects.  
To solve this, we have fixed the issue related to super-sampling, and now the disparity in the Visual Effects has been significantly reduced.
IMPROVED HDRI files LOADING TIME
Reason: HDRI files are usually several tens of megabytes in size.  This causes a significant increase in their load time for the content manager due to the time it takes to read the files and generate thumbnails.
Pre-Release version utilizes pre-rendered thumbnail images  (*.rlPreviewImage), making the content manager switch almost instantaneous.

VI. NEW CONTENT GUIDE

In order to help you get familiar with the all the cool features, we have provided some project samples for your reference.

Material Animation
By adjusting the parameters of the layers, including the density and masking method, the look of the layers are altered and passed to the texture channels of an object, which creates a realistic texture for the 3D object.

IBL Animation
If you want IBL to be animated, you can click on the Visual panel > Atmosphere tab > Image Based Lighting section > Add New IBL button to create a new IBL Clip.

GI Emmissive Plane
In Icone 7, we have added a new feature of light source namely emissive light plane. 
Now you can achieve a professional lighting result without an extensive use of spotlight.
Go to Create > Light > emissive light plane as shown below:

Raptoid PBR Animation Rendering with Motion available
iClone 7 has provide demo on non-human character namely Raptoid.
Go Props> PBR and you would find Raptoid.

Double click on Raptoid, and then right click the mouse button, you would find a series of actions commands,.
By combing different commands, you could easily animate Raptoid as shown below:




iClone7 Material Ball 

Now we have iClone7 branded material ball for displaying your PBR materials, you can get it from Prop>_PBR.

With the new material ball's multiple texture channels,  you can simple drag and drop , adjust the color and edit the UV for your models.


Turntable for render and display
Instead of static display, iClone 7 allows user to render it in a turn table.
Now you could render your commercial product with 360 degree display and show it to your audience in a professional way.

Emissive Props
iClone 7 allowing you to use glow maps, particles, dynamic images and video as light sources in real-time and now you could now render your scenes with professional lighting.




New 3D Blocks with bevel
Comparing with iClone 6 3D Block, iClone 7 Bevel 3D Block expand each edge with new face, which rounding the edges of polygon mesh.
Go to Props > 3D Block > Beveled as shown below:



HDRI image from your own Source

How are .rlPreviewImage files created?

Embed content & Content pack will always provide rlPreviewImages.  
If you are using HDRI files that you possess, you can use the following ways to create rlPreviewImage files.A
  • Create and save a small 250px * 125px png file and change the png extension to rlPreviewImage.
Notice: the HDRI and rlPreviewImage must have the same file name under the same file directory (same folder).
  • B. Use iClone's Visual > Image Based Lighting > Save HDRI to automatically generate a .rlPreivewImage.

VII. PERFORMANCE TIPS & GUIDE

In order to optimize the real time and rendering performance when running iClone , below are some important tips:

iClone 7 is designed with DirectX 11 architecture in mind, and thus requires an up-to-date game ready computer to enjoy the best it has to offer. 
iClone 7 has the same system requirements as iClone 6: iClone 6 DX11 System Requirements.


For Real-time GI Editing in iClone 7

Please refer to the recommended requirements for NVIDIA VXGI*:
  • Graphics card GeForce GTX 970 (4GB Memory), or above
  • Intel i5 dual core CPU, or higher
  • 8GB main memory, or higher

  • For more about GPU requirements for VXGI, refer to VXGI – Supported GPUs (GTX 10 Series included)
  • For computers with lower GPU hardware, you will need to turn off real-time GI viewport render for smoother editing.
  • GI also works with ATI cards, delivering correct visual results but with less performance boost.

iClone Real-time GI vs. Graphics Cards

The current Graphics card market can be separated into three levels.  The following chart provides the test scenerio and FPS data:

* It is suggested to turn off Viewport GI for smoother editing experience on complex scenes.
** You might encounter iClone crashes when loading complex projects, possibly due to exhausted system/video memory.
*** GI related features are fully disabled in iClone 7, no GI render for viewport or export

TIPS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE

Reallusion understands not all users are using the PC with highest performance, so we provided some tips to you for optimize iClone 7 running time:
 
A. Saving the project, or a select prop, or character is very slow from a big scene. So, if the performance of iClone is really slow, what can I do about it?
Check on Preference > Quick Thumbnail Generation to screen capture rather than render the thumbnail image during file save.
( It is because the thumbnail render process need to unload the scene to give a clean background, it takes time to process.)


B. Animation frames per second is really low, what can I do to improve performance?
For smoother editing and playback, do the following to improve real time performance:
1. Disable Global Illumination via Toolbar > Viewport GI.
2. Disable iSky via Visual > Image Based Lighting > Show Sky > Invisible. Or disable Sky blur, since blur is a realtime effect that consumes GPU processing time. 3. In case you really want to keep the same good background with blurring effect, we suggest you to use the Sky blur feature instead, because it bakes the result of your blur settings without taking additional rendering resources.

4. Besides adjusting the realtime quality (High, Medium, Quick), you can also reduce the max texture size to 1024x1024.

C. Opening some particular projects will cause iClone to crash.
  • iClone 7 uses Nvidia Gameworks VXGI which consumes large amounts of video memory, therefore, a project with a lot of objects and Global Illumination enabled will likely exhaust all system resources. If you are experiencing system crashes, you can create a New Project with Viewport GI turned off and then reload the problematic project.

Reallusion will keep enhancing the functionality in iClone, and we will provide two important breakthrough features in iClone 7.1.

1. THE CURVE EDITOR

2. THE FACIAL MOCAP

Before the official release, we will launch a beta test first. For details, we will announce it later.

With the above new features, you will find iClone to be a very powerful animation tool and pipeline.
Yet, in order to meet all the essential requirements for professional animation, we will still look for
every opportunity to enhance iClone in the near future: 

Ø  Develop a real particle system with enhance quality and flexibility,

Ø  Enhance DOF visual quality, adding Motion Blur Effect, and othervisual improvements

Ø  Speed up Undo/Redo function

Ø  Better UI in order to optimize for 4K display

Ø  More software plugin supports
