Someone elsewhere mentioned an issue importing FBX and they solved it by making sure the FBX format was 2013 (the format changes all the time but past versions are usually available in whatever program you are using to export).

So you might try that.

Why is 3DXchange crashing when I try to import a FBX file???

You have to give a bit more information. FBX version is a possibility but that wouldn't give a crash normally.

How large is the file and how many polygons does it have? 3DXchange is 32-bit and their are limits.

What application created the file?

EDIT: To add to this: the file may be corrupt. Autodesk has a free FBX converter that includes a viewer so you may see if it loads.

Hi,

The file size is about 1.6MB and I downloaded it from Adobe Mixamo (www.mixamo.com/3d-animations).
I tried to convert the FBX file in Autodesk FBX Converter 2013 and it didn't work either.
Thanks!

Several of us have downloaded from Mixamo and I don't think there were any problems. Best is maybe to try again as a download does get corrupted sometimes.

Try "Binary". ASCII is not supported.

From mixamo its always better to download the animations as an animation pack not individual animations.

See where it says export not selected? Take off the selected checkmark at the top. The prop should then get a checkmark at the bottom and it should work. Thought I would also post this below. I had major problems weeks ago and finally the issue was resolved.

I spent weeks last month trying to get a problem with not being able to import any fbx file from Daz. The issue came down to reinstalling Daz and even though I did that several times it still wasn't working. This is the condensed version of our conversation. Hope this helps it did me.

Me: Hi. I'm also an iclone user and last week I was in Daz and merged an iclone genesis 2 face key to my genesis 2 character so I could bring it into iclones 3dxchange program. It always worked before, as it should, but now whenever I do it ( exported as fbx files ) and try to open it in 3DXchange it crashes immediately. I talked with iclone staff and they said downloading the newest version of Daz would fix it. I did that and the same problem persists. So I uninstalled everything with Daz and reinstalled and now when I start it it wont login at the startup screen. I've provided a jpeg showing what the menu is saying. Please help, desperate to finish a project.
The order # put in is irrelevant.

Daz:

I apologize that you are receiving this error. First, please close Daz Studio. Then, launch Daz Install Manager. Go to your Installed pane. If PostgreSQL CMS is already installed, please uninstall. If you have the PostgreSQL CMS from Valentina Conversion installed, you will not need this, please uninstall. Then, go to your Ready to Download pane, and reinstall only PostgreSQL CMS, (or if you did not have to uninstall, install it for the first time). Then, close Install Manager. Open Daz Studio.

Then, you will need to reimport Metadata:

To do this, right click on the Smart Content Library pane, choose Content DB Maintenance, tick Re-Import Metadata, click Accept.

Then, close down Daz Studio. Then, reopen Daz Studio.

Let me know your results.

Thanks,
Emmalee

Me:

Hi Emmalee, or to whom it may concern.

I completely followed your instructions, and even did it twice including rebooting my computer a few times. Same problem.

Daz:

Will you please completely uninstall and then reinstall Daz Studio and try again? The other install may have been corrupted.

I have heard that IClone says that the latest version of Daz fixes this issue. Unfortunately, we aren't able to test this because we don't of IClone. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Emmalee

Me: Did that a few times. Same problem.

Daz:

I see that you wiped Daz, but did you also wipe the content that you purchased from our site and reinstall that?

This may be an issue with the old DAZ Content Management Service (DCMS).

In Windows, open the Task Manager by pressing 'CTRL + ALT + DEL.' Choose the Task Manager and click on the 'Services' Tab. You can click the top of the column name to put all the services in alphabetical order to make it easier to search through the column. Look for the DAZ Content Management Service. If it is listed there, please uninstall it via the Windows Control Panel. Once you have done this, re-install Daz Studio and the PostgreSQL CMS one more time.

Emmalee

Daz:

I wanted to verify that this is resetting your database so if there is a bigger underlying problem, this should fix it.

Emmalee

me:

Hi. The problem persists. Here's what I did step by step;
uninstall using install manager
uninstalled install manager in control panel
Deleted the following folders on my C drive;
Daz 3D users>michael>AppData>Roaming
Program files>Daz 3D
Program files ( x86) >Daz 3D
Program data> Daz 3D

reboot computer

download install manager
install;
Daz studio 4.9 64 bit
Genesis 2 dmc
Genesis 2 female starter essentials
Genesis 2 male starter essentials
Genesis 3 male starter essentials
Genesis starter essentials
PostgreSQL CMS (Win 64-bit)

started Daz. Right clicked content library, right clicked content data base. Clicked re input meta data.

Quit Daz.

Rebooted computer.

Same problem. But no problem importing using daz fbx export from my other computer to my main computer into iclone

I've provided a jpeg to show you the content management service isn't in the services section

Daz:
When you did the clean install on this computer, did you clear all AppData files? If it fixed the issue on your old computer, you will need to compare the difference with the computers and what's installed.

Me:
Yes all APPData files - everything I took off. Someone in another forum let me know about that. I actually did a search for Daz to find all folders and all of them were tossed.
So, what about the registry. I keep asking this could there be something there that I need to take out? I'd really like to know before buying or even using a registry cleaner because I've heard some bad things.

Daz:

You don't want to purchase a registry cleaner as that can get rid of files you need and can cause issues on your computer.. The web department has suggested that you uninstall Daz Studio and the PostgreSQL. Then go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\cms and rename or remove the ContentCluster folder and the cmscfg.json file located there. This resets your database (which should be what you mean when you say "registry.")

If you can not see your AppData folder, type %appdata% in the Start menu and Windows will open the hidden folder.

Once you have done that, reinstall first Daz Studio and then the PostgreSQL CMS (make sure you are not installing as Administrator). Then open Daz Studio and re-import metadata, with the box checked that userdata overwrites product data.
To do this, right click on the Content Library pane, choose Content DB Maintenance, tick Re-Import Metadata, click Accept. Tick User Data and All Products and click Accept

Me:

Hi Emmalee. I did remove that folder and all Daz related folders before but I'll try this again. One thing I don't understand ( which might be part of the problem ) is when I reinstall, you said to make sure I don't install as Administrator. How do I do this? I'm the only one using this computer, so I don't know how to do this since I am the administrator ( I guess. )

Thank you.

Daz:

I apologize for the confusion. To install as administrator, you would have to right-click on DIM and choose to Install as Administrator. Make sure that you don't choose this option. It doesn't matter if you install on the administrator account of your machine.

Emmalee
