I bought the GTX 1080 Founders edition (was a step-up for an EVGA GTX 980Ti) and it has been working fine for several months. For fun I checked and I am not eligible for a thermal pad... I wonder if the problems have something to do with a higher clock speed these FTW cards come with. EVGA is normally a reliable brand.

That's kind of odd - I'd ask Nvidia directly - They have a chat room here. ( The link below )
I contacted them about rendering Daz Graphics and using their newest GTX cards for Iray rendering since every one kept saying they weren't supported. The 1080 and 1070 and so on. None of the 1000 series is suppose to be supported. It turns out none of the GTX cards are supported by IRAY ! lol . - I should of went into quantum mechanics ! lmao !
This was Nvidia's answer.
Ok, but at Nvidia we do not recommend Geforce series cards for IRAY support, as GTX is mainly designed for Gaming and runs with low level Direct X API , while for IRAY we only recommend the Quadro series graphics cards which works with the low level APIs like the OpenGL, OpenCL and comes with full support for IRAY.

It's really a pity that NVidia insists on the GTX series being for games only as there is technically no reason to "cripple" the cards, as has been a long-standing gripe. The reason seems to be commercial as their top-performing Quadro cards are more expensive whereas they tend to underperform for iClone (or not al all). As game engines and real-time animated film-making sort of merge, I think NVidia's position is short-sighted and helps AMD in some areas, whose cards have a better Open CL implementation (important for rendering solutions such as Indigo).

I have the gtx 980 but thanks for posting this info regarding the over heating problems . I can just imagine what a drag it would be to have the 1070 and 1080.

It seems only certain EVGA versions of the card overheat. I have the EVGA GTX 1080 Founders edition and no problems.

As to industrial grade, as Mark has reported, his Quadra card couldn't handle iClone, so it depends on what you work with. CUDA cores are useful in certain applications, and the GTX 1000 series outshines the Quadras in that regard. I still believe it's just silliness on NVidia's part and it has baffled many that they refuse to provide a proper Open CL implementation, whereas the AMS prosumer cards are quite capable doing that. Of course, Open CL is "open" and NVidia prefers a proprietary avenue. I've been a long-time NVidia user, but I sometimes wonder why, especially since the power efficiency of AMD cards has greatly improved I'm told. Anyway, enough of that. I have to consider my blood pressure.

GTX cards are not good for industrial grade software they work much better with real compute cards. GTX cards are basically just graphic processors they are not
designed to compute. The only GTX cards with any kind of compute power are the Titan series. A compute card will always be better for industrial grade software.
Iclone Daz Poser etc are intermediate grade software packages they dont need the power of compute cards. IRay is industrial and requires compute performance
a GTX would never be able to handle the mathematical computing required. A GTX card can only handle a cretin amount of polygons then it will fail / be unusable.

what would you recommend for a card under $800 to run software ?

:crying::crying: I have a GTX 1080 on order :(:( they should make this known.
Some tests i come across on the web

In general I don´t buy state-of-the-art technology anymore, because it shows that there are always problems at first. You have to pay the price for always shorter development times.
