Hi

I am an animator.
I have just installed iClone 6 on my windows PC.
I want to do MOCAP. I've watched the tutorial videos.
I don't have an Xbox - I'm not a gamer.

Can anyone advise me whats a fairly cheap way to get started with MOCAP with iClone?
I know I need to buy a Kinect plugin. BUT what about the Kinect BOX itself? (realillusion don't sell the box)
Do I have to have an Xbox? Will any version of the Xbox do?
OR Can I buy just a Kinect box off ebay from someone - if so which versions are OK?

Any advice appreciated - or can you point me to a technical document on this on the realillusion site?

many thanks
El Iyawo

If you don't want an XBox then all you need is the Kinect V2 (or sometimes just called Kinect XBox) -- it's the only sensor MS sells nowadays.  Then you'll need the special cabling that allows it to connect to your PC.  Here are the two items from the MS store:

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Kinect-Sensor-for-Xbox-One/productID.307499400 (on sale currently for $50 off, which is a good deal)

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Kinect-Adapter-for-Windows/productID.308803600

You absolutely HAVE to have these even if you don't use Real Illusion's plugin -- which isn't something I'd recommend (I like Brekal's or, even better, the iPisoft one, but you should definitely use the trial versions of these software first to see what you prefer).

After that you'll be mocapping your heart out.

Oh, and let me just add you want to be sure your PC can run the Kinect -- just about any modern (in the last year or two) PC can, but some older ones cannot.  You will need a USB 3.0 port, and a *dedicated* one (that is, it cannot be shared by any other USB devices, 3.0 or not).  On my brand new laptop, for example, it has five USB ports and only one will work with the Kinect (on a desktop you can always buy a USB 3.0 PCi card if none of your ports work -- just make sure it meets the specs as not all of them do).  And, of course, you need to be running Win 8.1 or higher.

many thanks for your messages

I bought connect for xbox (see screenshot it says xbox on top)
and the windows connector  like this one http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Kinect-Adapter-for-Windows/productID.308803600
and I bought the reallusion plug, then sent 2
I tried each separately uninstalling the first before the second
for each I get USB device not recognized  (see image)
can you advise? Have I bought the wrong xbox?

I'm on windows 10 and my PC is only 3 years old.

Do you have any suggestions?

many thanks
Guillermo

The whole Kinect hardware thing is a bit confusing -- MS kind of mucked up the name about it.

Right now, Microsoft only sells one version of the Kinect, which they currently call the Kinect for XBox One:

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Kinect-Sensor-for-Xbox-One/productID.307499400

You will ALSO need the Windows adapter thing you linked to in your first message (here it is on the MS store):

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Kinect-Adapter-for-Windows/productID.308803600

Both of these things are the "Kinect for Windows" (which used to be sold separately that way, back in the XBox 360 days), or Kinect V2 as I like to think of it.  The two other things you need are Windows 8.1 or higher, AND a USB 3.0 port that will work with the Kinect (not all of them will).

You can check to see if your port is compatible by running the Kinect configuration tester software:

https://dev.windows.com/en-us/kinect/hardware-setup

which you can do now even if you don't have the right other hardware (which isn't a bad idea to see where you stand otherwise).
