Is there any chance that iClone's renderer will be updated to allow Point Light shadows? I know this might be real-time render intensive but what about at least allowing the users to turn the feature on or off? Or have the Point Lights only cast shadows upon rendering?

When you add a Point Light, look at it's Modify Panel and see the Shadow Settings and the Ambient Light Options. It will cast shadows. Not as intense as your example, but a shadow nonetheless.

Odd. I am not seeing that as an option.

For my Point Light, the Shadow check box is grayed out. See below:

Look above the Box you think is inactive.. "Shadow Settings"

Here is a Project with only a Point Light and a few Balls. No Key, No Rim... Just a Point light used.

The link expires in 7 days

Cricky,

I downloaded and loaded your sample project and I am not seeing shadows cast by the Point Light. Is it possible you're referring to the Ambient Occlusion feature turned on?

Try using a group of spots set in a ring, facing outward. Set them to have just a little overlap. One facing down at a wide angle might work as well.

I think we're getting off topic here.

As far as I can tell, Point Lights in iClone do NOT cast shadows, no matter the settings.

Yes, there are ways to mimic the desired effect of the example above using Spot Lights. However, each scene or project is unique and a hack or complex workaround is not a feature. Hence the original request to have Point Lights be able to cast directional shadows.

When Reallusion announced awhile back that iClone 6 would be getting rid of the 4 lights only limitation, I was hoping the news meant its lighting engine would be getting a major overhaul and brought up to the standards of modern gaming engines with features like global illumination, light baking, PBR, etc.

Sadly, though, it seems it was only a slight upgrade (in my opinion).
