Using video clips as an animated texture, the only codec that worked for me was .WMV The manual says whatever codec works on your computer should work in iClone.

Well it doesn't. It doesn't even accept the codec that iClone uses to export video.

So what is the best way to add the most codecs to iClone?

we usually expand iclone codecs with k-lite http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

careful with this install though, the software likes to fix things that aren't broken, so make sure you go manual and instruct it to not overwrite working settings. very annoying when that happens.

Because of possible problems with K-lite, my preferred source is Shark007: http://shark007.net/.

Also, there are certain limitations with codecs under 64-bit.

hrmm, thanks for sharing that, when k-lite works, it's transparent, but o boy when it fails, it fails! ( usually from the install )

CAUTION!  http://shark007.net/
Went to that site and the download contained a virus.

ouch!  -  yeah,  be careful with both codecs and players,  even popular ones,  it's a popular genre with blackhats. -  even with legit companies, somehow players and codecs are easy to hijack and repurpose.

k-lite works well for me,  just make sure to not let it change the codec settings that already work on your system -  that's the real problem with k-lite -  it doesn't just add new codecs,  it rewires your entire system codec set up on default install if you let it and causes problems .....If you take the slow install and disable any changes you don't need ...then it adds extra codecs to your system that run stable without causing extra problems.

Do you mean in the same scene? Because I find that .avi's are the best HD quality and can handle 1920 X 1080 in iClone - most of the time - but on occasions when they fail to load, or when I need more than one video texture in the same scene, then pop-videos are never-fail.... although more than 3 in one scene and it causes the hard-drive to suck power from the grid like a starving industrial estate...

The only downside in converting avis or wms to pop-videos (using iClone's popvideo converter), is the smaller trim sizes, and HD quality drops a little... still good enough for youtube, but border-line for TV or the big screens in cinemas unless the the scene move fast enough that critics don't have time to whip out and focus their mircoscopes...
