Hi,

While I have access to numerous professional tools (2d,3d,audio,etc..) I'm forcing myself to setup a working environment specific for machinima and of course iClone, by trying to find "indie" class tools that are cheap while being as powerful as possible.

I guess many of you have heard about Hitfilm, I'm using it for my iClone productions and it is certainly "the" ideal VFX companion to iClone for this price range and nonetheless awesome power and features range.

For audio, I've been using protools, cubase, etc.. by the past, lately I was using audition which is still considered as a "pro" tool and is not very cheap.

But recently, I've discovered what I now consider being "the" ideal audio companion tool for iClone (and Hitfilm): Reaper (reaper.fm).

Perhaps you know it already, but I wanted to share my discovery to those who may not and are always in pain when it comes to audio editing for movie - and I hope it's ok regarding the forum rules regarding advertising - because this software is a gift from heaven, really, very powerful, lots of plugins included, awesome routing, even scripting, can handle control surfaces, doesn't crash (yet), etc.. and.. something that may seems to be a detail, but it has a true fullscreen video track/window (audition has an awkward video window you can't even set fullscreen on a second monitor and is not even able to play smoothly any video..).

The best news is you get all that for an "indie" price of 60$ ! (it is not a limited "indie" version, it is the full regular version but for indies, see conditions on their website).

Anyway, if your resources are limited but still want to do serious audio editing for your productions, don't look any further, check it, and if later, you really regret that purchase, I promise I will buy you a beer ; ).

ps: I'm not affiliate in any way with Reaper, the authors, their website, etc.. IMHO they just deserve to be known to have made such high quality product for this price range.

I've actually been debating if I want to upgrade my mac or go back to pc....there was a time that all pro audio gear ran to mac to avoid the cracks, I had no choice!

Reaper is indeed a capable program and worth a look.

I am a long-time Sonar user (Cakewalk before that), but I use Reaper as well. One thing that's great about it is that it's a small download. 

BTW, the time of cracks in sound on PCs is long past us... Of course a good sound card is essential. It's no different from relying on a good graphics card.

yeah, but at the time all the 'industry standard' stuff was going to mac exclusively. it's better now....but i'd have to start from scratch to go to pc again, and learn a whole new software - then criticize the heck out of it's overhead limits, hardware is just part of it, number crunching in the software and workflow is another part. Logic doesn't come in pc, thats another issue.

still something like this is cool to just create on my pc, then send the wav files to mix in the mac.

ya, but the main thing is that it's pc, low cost and looks easy to learn..... i needed something on my pc for musical pew pew and just mixing quick audio for videos.

my whole goal is to be as fast as possible with creating ideas, and having a pipeline that will let me polish pro. i need my playroom! lol :D

Avid will soon be releasing a stripped down version of Pro Tools for free - most likely so stripped down to frustrate the user into purchasing the full version. :w00t:

protools is a toy for engineers, logic is a toy for composers - i'm more into logic, it's almost like a religion to us too....i fought tooth and nail to avoid protools! heh

I started with an Atari 1040 ST, and Logic and its predecessor were my first "sequencers". No audio yet at the time. Anyway, I never had to worry about so-called "industry standards", fortunately, but I realize that you have to.

I was also a user of the Atari 1040 ST.... man we must be old farts!
I used MasterTracks for sequencing & the ST even made Desktop Publishing an easy and fun adventure thanks to prgs like Pagestream.

All this while PC's were still pooping their diaper with MD-DOS

Mixcraft 7 by Acoustica is a good one and comes with a humungous library of sound effects etc. It is software for Music (recording instruments) as well as handling Wav, Mp3 Audio files.
I love the user interface and is simple to use. They also have a trial download available.
