Somebody asked me about how I make my UV in 3Ds Max, so I decided to just make a video tutorial to help her out. But since it's a free tutorial, I figure, why not just share it with the rest of you?

UV maps are something that I am still trying to always improve and there are numbers of ways to make them in 3Ds Max. Every artist has their own method in doing it. There are no correct way to do it, you just have to find one that works best for you. This method may not be the best way to do it but it is what I am currently comfortable with. The video has no audio but I added caption. This video is free and no advertisement on youtube so I am not getting paid for it. In return, I do hope you guys subscribe to my channel and if I get a lot of subscribers, maybe I will make more tutorials.

EDIT: I think I posted this in the wrong section of the forum. If that's the case, Admin please move it to tutorial section.

EDIT2:
For more in-depth on UV unwrapping, watch this series of tutorial from Autodesk

Great tutorial. Even without vocals I was able to follow along easily enough.

Even though I will probably not do this myself, it was still very helpful. Now I know what sw00000p is talking about when he insists that we should UNWRAP THOSE UVs!

I'll have to find out what "peel" and "relax" refer to, but that's just my lack of familiarity with this kind of process.

I did subscribe: always willing to learn more!

@Cellygon- Thank you! Great tutorial, this really helped me out....

Sharing knowledge is a beautiful thing, and is appreciated more than I can say.

@sw0000p thanks for those tutorials too!!!

Perhaps some of the developers here can help with another issue...

I have 3ds max 2011 & 2014....

The iClone5 plugin loads in 2011, but not in 2014....

In 3ds max 2011, when I go to export, following all the settings recommended in the G5 whitepaper, 3ds max "freezes" at @30-35% complete....

The plugin won't work in 3ds max 2014 at all...

Is there some trick, or fix that any of you know about?

Perhaps the plugin files need to be placed individually in specific folders other than what is listed for the 2010 3ds max version.

If anyone has a fix, I would deeply appreciate your sharing that information.

Thanks bunches,

Granny J

Hi GrannyJ,

I have two 3ds Max version installed too - 2011 (x86 and x64) and 2014 (x64).
iClone plug-ins installed in 3ds Max 2011 32 bit. Plug-in for iClone 5 works ONLY with 3ds Max 2011 32 bit!
Installation procedure should looks like this:
1. Install plug-in for iClone 4 into 3ds Max 2011 32 bit ising installer.
2. Copy plug-in for iClone 5 into 3ds Max 2011 32 bit.
I can remark that plug-in for iClone 5 can "freeze" on export if You make some mistake in Your scene and I recommend always to use "Export selected" instead of "Export".

And some remarks about 3ds Max "Render to Texture" feature...
If You need exact diffuse map transfer better to use these tricks:
1. 3ds Max Preferences > Enable Gamma = OFF;
2. Source and Target object properties :
- Receive Shadow = OFF
- Cast Shadow = OFF
3. Source and Target objects material settings:
(for both)
- Shader = Blind;
- 2-Sided = ON;
- Ambient = Black;
- Diffuse = White;
- Specular = Black
- Specular Level and Glossiness = 0
(for source only)
- Self-Illumination = 100
4. Render settings:
- Assign Render = mental ray Rendered; in mental ray Final Gather Precision = 0

As result new diffuse map will have exactly the same color tone as source map. ;)
