I have a book in my scene, which was linked to one character that has set it down.

Now it's time for the next character to pick it up.

However, with the book highlighted, I click on "pick parent" under "LINKS" and I am able to pick any other object or character in the scene as a parent, except for the character I want. I can link and detach and even attach and detach at will, except to this one character.

The notification window reports:
Failed to link. The selected item can not link to itself.

So, to be sure I'm not re-picking the book, I try to pick the character under the scene manager. Same problem.

Right before the problem began happening, I had pressed "pick parent" under the ATTACH heading. Then I realized I did not want to attach, but rather to link. So, I did not select anything and instead went directly to "pick parent" under the LINKS heading.

I wonder if this somehow introduced the glitch?

Anybody have such an issue before?

I have tried closing and re-starting iClone.

Going to try a full re-boot now.

UPDATE:
Full reboot no-go.

So I duplicated the book and was able to link no problem. So I will play with the visibility of each book as a work around.

I'll leave the original book in the scene in case I find a solution to the original problem.

I'm thinking it's a bug that got triggered when I selected "attach" and then did not attach to anyone (see above). Maybe it was a one-off or maybe some additional goof-proofing around that function is needed?

Peace,
Bud

Same problem been happening to me a lot lately. It's a bug, IMO. along with all the other iC5 Bugs since it's Launch :ermm:

That being said, you couldn't ultimately achieve what we do with any other Program, for the price.

My solution; If the Character has an Accessory eg; a hat, that's Attached & therefore a Character Sub-Node, Linking the Prop to the Accessory doesn't Display the Error Message, here. Then you can Link eg; the book to the Character's Hand Sub-Node.

You could try temporarily Applying a hat Accessory.

BTW - You can Link & Attach Objects by also Selecting the Parent in Scene Manager instead of Selecting the Parent in the Preview Screen. It's sometimes more convenient.

Anyone-else?

If you have iClone Pro then you can open the timeline and see what's up with the book in the Constraints track. If there is nothing there then we have a mystery...

OK, I just tried something else. It could be that somehow the character got linked to the book, so check if that is the case. Because if it is and you then try to link the book to the character, you'll see the error message you reported.

If you don't see a parent for the charcater, check the Constraints for the character in the timeline if you have Pro, because the linking may not have taken place at the beginning of the timeline.

Thank you Colour & Animagic,

I did try looking at all of the constraints along the whole time line for both character and book. I was able to link the book to other characters and objects, and unlink too.

It was a "mystery" ;-) Definitely a glitch, perhaps a bug.

I solved the problem by copying the book and then making the first one invisible at the transition.

I had that as a work-around, at least, so I am grateful for that!

Peace,
Bud
