As I am working on a new version of a special non-standard character, which I need to be able to use facial animation in iClone, and do to my ignorance on many 3DX topics, I will appreciate pointing me to a good tutorial on how to do a facial rigging for iClone facial animation features.

Help will be highly appreciated as I don't have the drive as to dig among the so many 3DX tutorials!

Thanks!

Hi Mike. Are you looking for the bone based, or the morph based? They can be combined or separate.

Here's one about bone based:

Here's a morph based:

...you can lead a horse to water! but that guy takes the cake! :pinch:

if you are going to help Mike, focus on helping mike, stop bringing up your war wounds, or you will ruin this thread like you did his last thread with posting my mesh and starting a discussion about proper modeling! Mike didn't like that!

Enough!! count your blessings they support you!! Be Useful for a change!!

Hi Mike,

Glad to see You back :)
If You going to "build" your character on G5 Game skeleton I can recommend to read "G5 Game Bone Whitepaper" first (link can be found here - https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic159769-231-1.aspx). It is not rigging tutorial, but has a lot of useful information.
Also I hope You have "G5 Facial Pipeline Character Pack" which come with Designer_Source_Pack.zip as a part. This ZIP includes Hunter_GameBone.fbx which can be used as example of rigging to G5 Game facial bone system. Also this FBX includes facial animation sequence for automatic conversion in 3DX.

Can say that there is nothing special in rigging to facial bones and You can use the same methods You usually use for rigging to body bones.

Just one remark -- If You going to make your character compatible with Unity after export, You should keep in mind that in Unity any single vertex can be rigged to (influence from) not more that 4 bones. If You will be out of this limit, your character after export and import in Unity can loose some animation details and result can be unpredictable. And can say that it's some sort of puzzle to keep this limit tuning rigging in lips zone, especially if You going to build smooth and realistic facial rigging.

Good luck,

P.S. For details of 3ds Max to 3DX exporting process You can take a look at my video demo -

Rigging a non standard character face in 3DX

if you realy mean in xchange ?
You can not rigg in xchange ,but in your 3D program of choice.

and then the xchange face expression editor is self explanatory.

OK folks!

Very appreciative for the responses.

I do hope peace and friendship reigns in the forum and all good folks renew our sense of fraternity and sharing!

Let's put differences away!

I'll try to check on all suggestions, but I can anticipate what I want to do is plainly use the very same facial bone rigging, as it comes from exporting a standard avatar, but which I will export as a non-standard creature for ulterior purposes!!!!

I hope I am not so nuts, but I always do "crazy" things trying to find some novelties!

Thanks again!

agreed Mike, that's all "I" ever wanted. unfortunately, I'm stubborn too and don't back down when challenged, it's my nature. But I want you to know that I appreciate you and want the best for you. Further I think you will enjoy the way 3Dxchange handles the fbx import, if a new player like me can do fun stuff, I can only imagine the levels you will take it to. I look forward to the new items you create with it!
