... the claw on the right side looks like an open curve (note the end of the jagged part of the claw), yet it comes through fine as a swf vector.The claw is most likely a closed shape that is layered behind the other part so looks like it is an open curve.

On some of the things I draw, I need to have part of the outline invisible (like an elbow joint where you do not want the outline on the top of the joint part as it will be layered over the arm and look weird).
How can I remove part of the outline and still keep it a swf vector?The way to do this is to not use an object outline. Set the object line width to 0 or the color to transparent to remove the outline. Then use the pen tool to draw your outline where needed.
Lines and open shapes will still be in vector format.
Do not fill open shapes or you will get weird results.
If you want, you can also draw the outline as a closed shape.
Use the pen tool to draw the outline (as a close shape) with line width 0 and use a fill color.
