Hmm I think I asked about this earlier, but I can't remember the response. xD
I bought one of the effects packs when it was on sale and just backwards engineered it.
It can say upfront though that the controls in the particle engine are pretty much like any other. You've got emitter size, image, wind, gravity, velocity, and a simple color change gradient over lifetime, size over lifetime... things like that. If you've used the one in Max, this should be similar... but not as awesome because these can't really interact with surrounding geometry or create child emitters.
One of the MAIN important things to make them look good though is the images you use. Lots of times, to create a an effect, you will need multiple particle emitters. This is why you (as previously suggested) would attach them to a prop and just hid the prop. This way you can save it and all the particles and things will come in with it.
I believe you can do even more with the lua scripting... but I've seen NO documentation on how to use this so... yeah.
