Hi,

Can spring effect be used in non-human characters? I am trying to add spring effect to my cat character's tail. I put a .spx file in with the .iavatar and .ini files all named the same.

spx file has:

tail2 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail1
tail3 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail2
tail4 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail3
tail5 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail4
tail6 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail5
tail7 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail6
tail8 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail7
tail9 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail8
tail10 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail9
tail11 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail10
tail12 Parameter:0.1 10.0 9000.0 2500.0 750.0 0.0 0.0 1.0 0.0 InputBone:tail11

but, spring effect does not show up when imported (I can't even check the spring box)

Cat Sample: https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic13464-82-1.aspx

Or mabe I have to just do the tail as a seperate prop?

When I was in nursery school I talked so much that the teacher got mad and made me sit in the closet with the door closed (in the 1960's - today she'd be in jail). ANYWAY, she said that I just continued to talk to myself in the closet!!!

SO....

Well, I tried to make a spring prop (Cats tail) from scratch following the white paper in the developer section. And it worked! Then I tried to export  the same prop from MAX as a non-human charater and it also works like a character - but the SPRING effect is gone.

I guess what I want is the ability to be able to pose the tail , being part of an avatar while having the same parts react as a spring...which I guess at this point is not possible.

But then, how is the spring effect to her boobs added to the avatar samples like Trinity???

OH MY GOD - WAIT.

Trinity's boob bones are not part of the main bone structure - you can't pose them either...but mabe you can have 2 sets of bones that can effect the same geometry one set working as a skeleton and another set as springs?! Got to try that!

Did it work?

Nope, not yet.  I added new spring dummies along with the tail bones, but I could not get the skin modifier to allow me to share vertices between 2 bones. I am far from a MAX expert. A 2nd skin modifier works in MAX but Iclone can't see it and the spring does not work.

Back to the drawing board.

My grain of input here...

My guess is that When it comes to Characters, Reallusion actually expect a fixed number of Bones with proper naming convention but I have not proven this yet...

I have tried to build a Rubber Man defining the spring structure out of the existing Avatar Bones and this seems to work but I did not invest a lot of time into this...

In a Nutshell, I fear that currently, you cannot add new Bones to an iClone Character but you can use existing bones into you spring chain (except the lower Torso I presume)...

I would use the 3DS MAX G3 base Character, extend a Tail from the existing Mesh and drive the tail using a modified Boob envelope or any other bone chain that already exist e.g. Neck01, Head etc... :)  Yeah, not sure this would look great as the Neck will bounce back and fourth with the tail ... But it will work.. !:hehe:

Hey Folks!

Right and wrong!

Of course you can add more skin modifiers in a character.  But to different mesh parts.  You can also create as many bones you want, but do not expect to control them from the motion editor.     Instead create bones with plain box objects.   Skin your extra mesh with those bones and make them visible by linking the root to LowerTorso.    Apply a simple bitmap texture so you can later control the opacity and make the boxes invisible.    At iClone you can animate the boxes and the skinned mesh will follow.   DO NOT LINK THE MESH TO ANYTHING.

When your animations is OK, adjust the Box-bones material to transparent and... Voilá!

Also... When doing springy stuff, Watch this:    Export the character or spring directly to the Custom folder at AllUsers, and also place the .spx there!.   DO NOT IMPORT THE PROP or character.   Rather, LOAD it with the normal left side icon driven menu!

If you "import" from the right side modifier menu, the .spx is ignored.   I reported this to RL but still had no acknowledge of such.

For characters with springy fannies or tails, load the character FIRST, then at the "bone System Modification menu"  (Modify panel, all the way down, import the settings file, that is the .spx!!!!!    Boom!   You will have it springing around!

If it does not work.... Be sure.... You are doing something wrong...  Murphy!!!

Thank you Mike - great advise.

Boy will I be mad if I go back to my first test (10 versions back) - and load it into Iclone with a different method and it works!

I have to wait until tonight though -  I HAVE to work on something that makes money today - bummer.....

You know Mike - I could kiss you in the mouth!!!!!

Yes, all I had to do was use the bone modification import function on my original .spx.

Had I known this, my first attempt at Spring in the tail would have worked. It is all a bit rough, but the cats tail now has spring AND I can also pose it. Interestingly, the new pose seems to become the default pose for the spring effect. This seems to be a quick and easy way to add secondary motion.

Thanks for the help!

I'm happy I could help you, Joe!

The non-human and no standard creatures are very tricky but we are finding all their secrets!

Remember:  If you want to be able to animate the tail, you can do:  First create a Box, (plain box) near the lowertorso bone.  Link the spring root dummy to this box.   The rest of the spring, normal in a chain as you did.   Assign a bitmap material to this control box, so you can see it in iClone but also can make it invisible cranking down the strength slider on the opacity map. (must have a bitmap opacity assigned too).    Now when the cat moves, the box transfers motion to the spring root and the tail swings.   But if the cat is stopped, you then animate the control box and can wave the tail as a happy cat!

About the boob bones in G3... Wrong!  They are part of the character bone chain.   What happens is iClone does not have controls enabled for those.   Too bad, they have never seen a boob hoola  in action!  Wanna do it?    Do the same.  In MAX, look for the breast bones.

Unlink the first of each. Add a control box  (let's call it that way) for each breast, linked to the lowertorso, then link the breast bones to each control box.

Now, you can "animate" at will the Bs, while retaining the springy, fluffy features.

For those late night club video shows !!!!

You have some minor errors in the run cycle.  Look in Internet for animal walk cycles, or shoot a cat. (not with a 358 gun, of course)  If you rotoscope some motions with iClone Motion editor 2.5, or with MAX (better) then you can have a perfectly running cat.  Just one cycle is enough!

And feel free to ask any time.    You are a good friend and I am ready to help!

Also...

If you have a nice sexy secretary or female cousin, maybe she can give me the mouth kiss....

lOl!
