Howdy, folks,

Again, sorry so long since last I posted anything. I built the Imperial Star Destroyer and Corellian Corvette (Blockade Runner) from Star Wars using Blender for construction, and iClone for assembly, texturing, and animation. Also made Tatooine and the moons, as well as the laser effects.

It's not shot for shot perfect, but I think it turned out rather nicely. :)

I've watched it twice, Steve.

However on each occassion there seems to be some things not quite right, my end, anyway.

1) "Star Wars" Title hangs for too long at end. I've used proDAD's Heroglyph "Star Wars" Title, many times

2) Stars don't don't "Twinkle" in next Scene that Hangs for too long as 2D backdrop, with nothing happening.

3) The Starship appears against the stars, that suddenly Pan up & down with a judder

4) Etc

Overall - Appears to be jerky with unconnected events.

The presentation looks like 10 minutres work or so. Only a few seconds of action.

I've watched your other Clips, which are far superior to this one.

How about embedding the Clip in a Post, to double-check?

Hi, Colour,

Some good points you bring up. :) Believe me, I had a time with trying to make sure the ships stayed straight and true....I didn't want to use paths this time, but I probably should have. :)

Yeah, the logo hangs in a bit longer than I'd like, and the opening crawl even starts a couple seconds later than it should have. In truth, I've rarely even seen a video game or PC game based on Star Wars that uses the logo and opening crawl that actually gets the timing right. :)

As for the stars twinkling, I think that was a result of the transparencies I used when doing the logo and opening crawl. Unfortunately, even a transparency is regarded as a solid, so when the transparency is "on", any light source behind it is reduced to merely the image itself...the light won't shine through until the transparency is "off". I think that's what happened when I turned the transparencies for the opening crawl off. Or, if you meant that the stars SHOULD twinkle....in that case, I probably shoulda tried to generate some kind of video of twinkling stars and used it as a sky backdrop instead of the static image I used. :)

You'll actually see another example of this (although I couldn't track down exactly where the source of it was) when the camera switches to perspective two: the ships coming at the camera. If you look at the atmosphere of Tatooine, you'll see part of its atmosphere is blocked out of its illumination by a relative square transparency shape, which slides to the left as the blockade runner comes closer to the camera, and then the square disappears.

Thank you for your honesty and constructive cricticism. I will try to be more mindful of such things in future endeavors. :)

The only criticism that I have is that, it seemed the destroyer was moving too fast. In the movie, the massiveness of the destroyer vs the tiny rebel ship was some of the most important symbolism for the audience to get. When you watch it for the first time, you think "is this ship ever going to end?"

Sure enough I compared your scene to the original. We see the front of the destroyer and it's almost twelve seconds before we see the back of it. In your scene, it's a little over seven seconds. There's not enough time to go - "holy cow, this ship is huge". Without that, the audience can't get the right perspective and realize just how underpowered the rebels really are.

Hi, all,

Thanks for the kind words and constructive criticisms. Without CC's, we'd never get better, aye? :)

Andi, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you like the Imperial Star Destroyer. It took me five days to build, assemble, and texture....the Corvette (Princess Leia's ship) roughly four days to do the same.

Colour and Gnasche, I totally appreciate your CC's on this....as I said, without them, we cannot improve. :) So, I am completely redoing the chase. And already it is turning out TONS better. I should've used paths all along...(ugh....the dark side consumes me :) ). Yes, paths were definitely the answer.

Already the Corvette's moves look much better on camera now that I've used a path, and repositioned the cameras more properly. It looks much more movie accurate. (I did state in my initial post that my shots weren't movie perfect....but now, they are definitely getting there.)

Colour, I have an experimental idea in mind to try and make the stars "twinkle" a little bit...hopefully, it will pan out. :)

Gnasche, I completely, completely agree about the Star Destroyer's screen time during the initial shot. Even I was not really happy with it. I knew the timings, but I just didn't get them right. Hopefully, using a path for the ship, I'll be able to correct not only the timing, but the appropriate screen fill it should have at the top of the screen. The ship should be gargantuan, and it just doesn't quite cut it with my first cut.

My laser effects should also turn out MUCH MUCH better...and I am going to redo the sound effects to make them not so harsh as the first cut. :)

Thank you again, everyone. I hope not to disappoint with my next take. :)

I think the ships looked pretty amazing - good attention to detail there.

My biggest complaint (and I haven't compared the scene to the original to see how they dealt with this originally) is how flat everything looks, from the moon in the backdrop to the ships. I think part of it was lack of contrast or low-res background textures, and part of it was the lighting - hardly a shadow to speak of.

Good luck with your project!

I've only skimmed Warlord's Tut Space Ship Project. However he has some pretty mean Galaxy Images Content that go with.

I'll double-check  the Content. However, I wouldn't be able to Post Images on the Forum. You would need to purchase the Tut.

I'll check my proDAD Heroglyph Templates for "Twinkling Stars" If yes, I can Input your Text using Hero's Starwars Template. Render that to File DV-AVI & Upload to MediaFire Website for you to Download as a Full Screen Video Background?

BTW - The StarWars Title should fade into the distance & not "Hang" as tiny indiscenerable script.

I'll have a dig-around, to see what I can come-up with.

ADDED - Ok - Had another look at the Clip.

It would look good if the stars are Zooming in, while the Logo, Title & Starship Zoom out. Then you'd get the effect of the Starship travelling through space. Heroglyph has the tools to do that.

As far as the timing goes for the Star Destroyer, that's something that is quite a bit of give and take.

See, when they shot the movie, believe it or not the model for the Corvette was actually larger than the Star Destroyer.

In my shot, to refine it, I have to use two Star Destroyers at different sizes, just so I can try to come close to the imagery we saw on the big screen version. :) I think it turned out quite a bit better. Still have to do the laser bolts, which I've also refined for size as well as firing time.
