I've not had much opportunity to look thoroughally in IC3, but I was curious... With the new actor interactions, such as walking, picking up items, etc... I was curious what it takes to import a Sketchup scene (Yes I purchased 3DXchange 2.0, although haven't tried it yet tho) that has stairs, and what it takes to have an actor walk up those stairs... As well as open doors...
Thanx

iClone 3 doesn't come with a stairs iProp but with this system it is quite possible to create stairs with built in "walk up" animations included. That is something we will see more of over time as more iProps become available.

Hi, The stairs in the Mantelpiece scene are not iProps so there no simple operate commands to use that will make your character just walk up the stairs. Your options are to create the animations yourself and use the timeline to make your character walk up the stairs. Alternatively you can use some creative camera angles to obscure the legs so the leg movement is not seen. The Mantelpiece stairs prop does have solid banisters so you this will hide the legs if you wish to use the "easy" method. I did create a walking upstairs motion some time ago. I'll try and find it and post it on the forum to download. Not perfect but helpful if seeing leg movement is important.

I saw this post yesterday and thought about it for a few minutes, this is what I came up with:
If you look below you'll see a sample of a prop/project which should be available tomorrow on Clones2go; or today, depending on the time you see it of course.
There is a clip below called "Mantel Steps" which shows what anyone else can create using the guidelines in the video clip. It took about an hour to create this, and it works pretty well to a degree.
The project that will be uploaded does not contain anything except the walking blocks and an invisible character. Just select the invisible character in the scene manager for the project, and then substitute in your character by double-clicking them...it's a direct replacement and the characters motions and edits are retained that the project provided includes. Don't move anything and the Living Room prop in the Mantel Pack will load in perfectly lined up to complete the scene you see in the video clip.
This is but one method, and isn't perfect, but if all goes well it will generate a few thoughts of using the same method for other projects that you and others create.
Have fun, and you don't have to have the project to accomplish this, as it is not perfect. You can just duplicate what you see, and go to town in your already made project. More lessons can be had from me on SKYPE at learn.iclone..I don't know it all, even though I have been accused of being a know-it-all....I just laugh, because I only know what I know and I like thinking outside the box....boxes are for those who want the world closed in around them...reach up and throw back the flaps...it's amazing what is outside that box!

This is an excellent piece of work Cricky. Very realistic 'walking up stairs'. Great job. Shy

Thanks Cricky. Just what I need. I look forward to trying it out. What I like about your 'thinking box' is that it is never square either. Thank you.

This seemingly simple thing is so very difficult to achieve! I've put this up to see how well people think it looks. Personally I am far from satisfied. It all works fine till they try to walk up the stairs....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoceIJTu6nk. I tried doing a simple movement and repeating it with collect clip and perform but tha avatar always reverted to the original position. This meant that I could not climb a set of stairs by repeating a loop on each pair. Has anybody managed this?

Ellies', You have to apply/use a LOOPING Walk Motion where the character doesn't move but "walks-in-place"...then you move them forward using the right-click MOVE command. There is a LOOPING Walk inside iClone that I have, but it may be from version 1.0 for all I know...I've been using it for a while now.
There is a sample of what I came up with HERE as a Method I've used with some success. Perhaps your solution to walking up steps will be made easier when iClone4 is released...can't say for sure though.

Thanks Cricky, I really appreciate the pointer and your help here. This is what I did. After a bit of messing about I used a single block as a helper and moved to the next step each forty frames and then went back to the twenty intervals to shift the vertical upwards while accepting the horizontal. Using G3 avatars I had found that Violet's Walk forward worked well but Trey's was too widely spaced. So I applied her movement to both characters. My laptop takes a heck of a long time to render (this scene requires water, glow and other stuff) but I'll show you how it looks tomorrow. Here we go! [edit] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctozgiwgwik Sadly though I haven't found a way to save a movement to be easily applied as a general motion. Collect clip doesn't work for this one. Thanks again Cricky. btw - could you check your sig as it doesn't seem to work too well on my connection?

Where there's a will, there's a way.
The resulting video looks better than the first and the motion collection won't work for this because it really isn't a motion you're collecting; but a combination of connections to props that assisted the motion. Really good considering what you have to work with.
As far as the connection goes in viewing the Video Wall, I can't help you there. The video wall is a feed and it does require viewers to have a fast connection.

Thanks again, Cricky. :D I must say I was so pleased with myself that I failed to spot Tony walking straight through the glass door at the end :pinch:

I've looked a lot but can't find the file to download on Clones2Go. Has there been a change or is it removed? I'd really like to obtain it. Thanks Bob

Let's just hack right through this Gordian Knot with the sword of technology, shall we?
Join TheTrailersPark.com (membership is free) and go into the Downloads.
From there, go into the CMU file section.
From there, go into the iClone / VNS department.
EDIT: Let me not commit here to pointing you to specific file names to download. I may have made a mistake previously.
Go here:
CMU mocap search
and do a search for the action you're interested in (for example, stair).
Then navigate to that section of the VNS files at TheTrailersPark
PS Don't forget to donate!! :hehe:
