I've noticed that there are a lot of dazzies getting on the iClone 7 bus of late and not surprising really. Many of us iCloners appreciate the daz3d models and use them in our work, however the big draw back is the high poly count especially the clothing. the daz decimator which at $100 is a bit pants to say the least and doesn't do what it says on the tin most of the time. The other day I tried the Mixamo decimator and WoW. It works great and I cant recommend it enough. The down side is that come August, Adobe are removing that service from Mixamo. There is hope on the horizon though from simplygon.com which has been taken over by Microsoft and is a standalone decimator and remesher which looks really good. As of yet I've not tried it out but its on my todo list for this coming weekend

I am curious as to what you mean concerning the Decimator plugin inside Daz.
I use it practically all the time, and i am able to decimate everything with minimum to no quality loss. :)
I am using it particularly for clothing and props. How come you aren't satisfied with it?

On some of the items I've tried decimating I get distortions particularly on clothes. I would love to be able to use the daz3d for everything daz because using mixamo loses all the morph data. Not a great problem because the characters i've decimated in mixamo are not for close up. Rampa has a solution for weighting but perhaps someone knows of an in depth tutorial ?

To get great results.... use a mesh will all "Quads."
Daz mesh's looks great, but they are not made of all quads. You are forced to stiop at a certain point. Keep going = really poor results. This is why Turbo Squid and others have outrageous prices for certain models.
Example: Take Daz's greatest looking characters, cloth and props.... give them all quads... You'd be able to decimate it until your hearts content. The price will shoot through the roof, because it is now "A High Quality Mesh."

TheOldBuffer (7/7/2017) I'm not an experienced daz user so is there an easy button in daz to convert to quads? If there was... nobody would complain about poor results.
Also: It's important to understand the term "All Quads". (iClone uses game technology and (Can) render triangle strips in real time.) If the Modelr creates his / her mesh using all quads.... the moment it enters 3dxch or iClone... it instantly becomes triangles. But.... This mesh decimates beautifully.... because the Quads are simply split in half.
The point is: If the Modeler does not create all quads.... "Flip a coin and hope for the best." Daz high res looks good, but turn on the wireframe and yikes.... not high quality.
I perfer a Reallusion character any day, over a Daz character. Reallusion models in all quads. Photoshop can them look better than Daz.
Prop, Accessories... "Flip a coin."

You can see the result in realtime, and weighting decimations specific areas . eg. the Head less but the Body more. Decimatior(balancer) in DAZ Studio do a really good job

Especially clothes get distorted or poke through
there is no an general solution . You drag on the slider and will find for you self the best result from decimate and still nice looking . You can see in realtime what happen. Not all decimator have this features Weight means it is possible split your Mesh in surface groups. DAZ Figures have already many surface groups . You can chose which group keep more Polygons. higher value means less decimate . lower value more . e.g. That is usefull, if you want more details for Head, but less for the rest . LOD is not necessary. Export and done Keep in mind >Decimate will always be a compromise and never make a mesh better DAZ Character looks only good for stills ,because many high-res Textures, many polgons and rendered with Raytracing For iClone I prefer CC, because it is optimize for realtime Rendering in iClone.
Not only the many polygons eat performance, also the many high-res Textures. Therefore Texturaltas is important too, if you want use DAZ Character. in iClone

Daz mesh's looks great, but they are not made of all quads. That is not true !!! Decimating can be very simple or extremely cumbersome, depending on what software tools you have access to. Some tools will highlight your triangles for you.
The more options your tools give you, i.e. poly groups, highlight tri's, etc.... the better the results. Much of Daz's content is not modeled with "all" quads. Quadrify the mesh and you'll see the "Triangles." "The decimation problem lies with these tri's."Convert tri's to quads... the results will be most pleasing. You're saying "all" of Daz mesh's are made of all quads? If that was true... this discussion on poor decimating results would not exist.

Daz characters are quite useable in Iclone and can have fine performance but it takes some time to find the best way to do it. When they have clothes on (which they often do) I hide the parts of the Genesis body that aren't visible. This is where most of the savings come from. Then I decimate the clothes and any Genesis parts still visible, although never the face/head. That needs to stay looking tip top. As for textures, this depends on how much you want to compress everything. I prefer not to use texture atlas most times, and just batch reduce the size of the exported textures.
The real problem with Daz characters is the hair. Decimated hair can look hideous, but you have to do some cause the polycounts can be ridic. I look for Victoria 4 or Michael 4 hair since those are usually already lower in poly count.
Why did I go to all the trouble to work out how to do it? Daz resources are simply too numerous for me to ignore. Their library is the biggest of such consistent quality and they get new products almost everyday. It's insane. Anyway just pointing out that it's not too bad once you get the hang of it.

I add high detail to low resolution characters... using a (1024 x 1024) texture map:

Then, increase the resolution to Medium Res and still have the (1024 x 1024) look great.... like this:

No HD textures. Diffuse = 1024 x 1024 Specular = 1024 x 1024 NormalMap = 1024 x 1024

Problem doesn't appear anymore, Cool. No problems with props. Problem with characters, though.
Props are a single mesh. Select a single mesh of the character, i.e. skin. The characters mesh is (weighted to the bones). You must make a (small) change when decimating. You cannot change it vertex (order)

I'm not using windows 10 on this pc and have browser issues.
Nevertheless, decimating works like this: 1. Select a mesh... set its reduce value.... decimate. "That's It."
Character Decimating: (in your software of choice... turn off the skin) Decimate the mesh using a small value. Turn on skin.
Result: Reduced polygons / triangles. The vertices remain (correctly) weighted to the bones. Follow this and you should not have a problem. __________________________________________________________________________________
Also: Simplygon has awesome tools. Remesher Bone reducer ... and much, much more.
Don't attempt to use any these features until you figure out what works in 3dxchange.

You want good Daz decimation results? You've got to fix Daz mesh's. There is no way around it. Use something like Blender and make quads.
Move the vertices..... otherwise your playing Russian roulette. ...so many are unwilling to do this... and suffer the poor results.
Crank up the resolution enough and anything will look good. Attempt to decimate (Not All but a larger amount of) Daz content and experience "Poor Modeling."
You can always pay 3 to 5 times more for the same content that "Will" decimate pleasantly. ...or learn how create "Low Poly Proxies" and speed it up with "SkinWrap."
Thousands upon thousands of fewer poly's.

....that render super fast and looks great. ....

1024 x 1024 (Diffuse, Specular and Nomal Map) Nothing HD!
Ray Trace this with AO & Sub Surface Scattering.... "Realistic 3d Character" No need for HD NormalMaps..... Myth.

toystorylab, The effort required to fix Daz mesh's (like Hair)... is not worth the effort.
Create New Hair 1. Sections of polygon strips *Bangs, top, side, etc) 2. Unwrap it.... "Simple Planar Projection" Flat and easy. 3. Drag 'N Drop Daz hair and "Opacity" maps. Off to iClone.
Cloth: Model low poly proxies. 1. Texture bake will "Bend" the low poly vertices to "Match" the high resolution model.
Practice Modeling. (A lot of work, but worth the effort) Daz and iClone users.... Will make you rich!

My Request: Video-Tutorials/Documentation on - DAZ DECIMATOR (+texture atlas) - SIMPLYGON (Reduction/Remeshing + Material baking) or Video-Tutorials/Documentation on - an affordable alternative Software... (bforartists/sensei)

EDIT I know we have CC and it probably is the better option (in iClone) for Characters, (most of my Characters are CC) but i have quite a lot DAZ characters, would be cool if i can use them (NO DAZ-Hair) at an acceptable FPS (more than 4 or 5 Characters + Buildings/Props at the same time :Wow:) WITH the cool DAZ-Environment/Buildings/Props/Transport-stuff (i also have quite a lot of them)...

The Goal:
..to decimate/remesh ...reduce Draw calls Keep in mind, i don't want to build stuff from scratch (!) This sounds like you are considering "fixing daz mesh's." If this is not correct... say so and I'll immediately stop posting. Cloth: You do not need to build anything from scratch. (But you must learn how to convert triangles into perfect quads)
If this is not part of your goal (Learning Blender tools to create quads)... Tell me now and I will stop posting. __________________________________________________________________________________________
If this is something you care to do.... You need modeling tool practice. Practice "Box Modeling" in Blender.
"Inserting segments / move vertices." 1. Create a box. 2. Insert segments. 3. Create "Diamond" shaped quads. Use the "Cut" tool and split a few quads into triangles. "These triangles will decimate beautifully." Use what you learned in "Box Modeling" and repair the Cloth. Fix the problem area(s). Fast way: (Remesh) ______________________________________________________________________________________ You mentioned reducing "Draw Calls." If you talking about making "Game Content"... you really need to focus on repairing the mesh. Game engines are far more "Unforgiving".... too many draw calls.... Crash! I have no Blender experience at all... Is there a Video-Tutorial HOW TO DO this with Blender: There are many Blender tuts available. Start a the very beginning... Navigating the viewport Transform tools... move, scale, rotate. Do a few "Box Modeling" Blender tutorials. Now your ready to Fix Daz's cloth.

..to decimate/remesh ...reduce Draw calls Keep in mind, i don't want to build stuff from scratch (!) This sounds like you are considering "fixing daz mesh's." If this is not correct... say so and I'll immediately stop posting.
Okay... Actually i want to animate cool Characters in nice looking environments with iClone, not create :D I found nice Characters and Environments at DAZ, and i hoped it would be easy with decimator + texture atlas to make them less "heavy" to animate in "real-time"... It is not that easy if you have no idea how to do it. After that I thought Simplygon would be the solution... It is not that easy if you have no idea how to do it. Easy to follow video-tutorials on these toppics would have been cool, but i can't find some. So i am willing to try your suggestions. To achieve my goal (how to convert triangles into perfect quads :satisfied:) and to get a better understanding of 3D I will dive into Blender... It will take a while, but i have vacations in August

toystorylab (7/10/2017) It is not that easy if you have no idea how to do it. Easy to follow video-tutorials on these toppics would have been cool, but i can't find some. All decimators: Step by step. "Select the mesh, set a value, decimate." _________________________________________________________________________ Simplygon video. 1. Select the mesh 2. Click the Reduce tab 3. Set a value 4.Decimate That's it. If you set a small value and do not get good results.... No decimator can fix a poorly modeled character.
So i am willing to try your suggestions. To achieve my goal (how to convert triangles into perfect quads :satisfied:) and to get a better understanding of 3D I will dive into Blender... It will take a while, but i have vacations in August  Focus at the (2 min. 20 sec.) mark. Note: poorly modeled characters do NOT convert triangles to quads.... "As you'd expect." The tool's algorithm must guess.
You can do it.

toystroylab, Most of Daz content... I don't bother fixing the mesh the conventional way.
Modeling Made Easy: "Quickly create low to medium resolution models."
Draw lines on any mesh.... and finish much faster. Simply create half... hit symmetry.. done.
I know you don't care to create.... Trust Me.... It's 10 times faster to draw a few "edge loops".... duplicate them.... hit symmetry... done.

toystorylab (7/11/2017) Thanx... A lot to learn... Looks like my weekends won't be boring anymore  Indeed, it's a lot to learn. ...just for the record.....BRAVO! You got guts.... most won't even attempt this.
Again.... I know your not interested in creating.... but once your gain modeling "tool" experience.... You learn quick ways to fix any mesh. 1. Snap vertices to an existing mesh. 2. Drag multiple "Segments / Edges" = duplicates 3. Weld the joining vertices
FACT: Quads that get triangulated "Decimate" beautifully.
GO toystorylab!
