Hi Gang,
Many thanks for the cool opportunity with iclone animations in the competition.

I'm only a newb so I'm still a bit lost, but I've been poking around their forums for an hour and found a stack of free models and advice that's made it highly rewarding for me already!! YAYY!!

And I'm very excited to see what the pro members can come up with... can't wait to make it through the initial moderation delay of a day or two at Polycount so I can get my fingers and nose even deeper into it over there and maybe have a play myself.

So many thanks again

:)

On the intro page of the contest site, it states "Entrants can submit sketches, mockups, 3D rendered images, or preview animations to take part in the various early stages of this contest."

Does this mean that this contest is just stage One of a bigger prize at the end?

and can you tell us if it is, or is it a secret?

You're not on your own there! I've been using iClone for many years but the standard for this comp maybe beyond my abilities!

Also I have to wait until Polycount let me use their forum fully. Every post I make needs to be approved first. so unless that gets sorted I might not even bother!

Hello All,

I've come up with away to do this competition and still work on my projects. So I've started a WIP thread over at Polycount.

Projects called "Batman: The Last Laugh"

I'm going to use only iClone specific assets, so I won't be importing models though 3DXchange but building everything within iClone. Unless previously converted.

LINK

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Hey guys, Little help/advice please?

I became a member of polycount the day after the comp started, but I'm still waiting for permission to start my thread in over in the polycount forum...
(meanwhile I've been a member here for over a year)

This is the error I keep getting from polycount:

"You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons: Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system? If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."

I've already started my project, but I can't upload anything to my own thread over there yet, because it won't let me... sigh.

... getting nervous that my time is ticking away and you're all having fun without me...

By Stefos - 10 Years Ago
Yes I had the same problem...make a post on the thread for the comp.....once you have made your first post you will be able to create your own thread :-) you may have to reload the forum back in before you can create your own thread for your comp entry.

Hope this helps
By animagic - 10 Years Ago
I will be participating as well. Which will be interesting because I am not a computer-game player...
I also have to get used to the new RL forum format... No options to include images or anything or advanced editing?
By Tarampa Studios - 10 Years Ago
Hi Animagic...

I can't figure out how to embed an image in that forum yet either...

But it *does* have many features that are (used to be?) common here... e.g. so far, I've been uploading screenshots by using the "upload file" function of the "Go Advanced" button in the bottom RH corner of each new reply/message.... and then it opens an upload window, that - when it's finished uploading - provides us with a link for the uploaded image file... and then I've tried to use the old [img] and [url] functions to embed that link, but it doesn't seem to work.

In my blog, I've asked for any help or advice about it, so it might help to keep an eye there, in case any of their members can help...

Here's the link to my blog:
http://www.polycount.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=28387&d=1431005942

My Entry is "Pale Red Redemption: Mustang's Revenge"
... it's a parody of gaming, 50 years from now...

Some of the other entries are mindblowing - and really insightful into their processes... so many big thanks to Reallusion and Polycount for hosting this chance to mix and share tips and strategies. It's a wonderful opportunity to network with talented creators who are obviously the next generation of legends...

Sorry I can't give you a quick-link to the specific message about uploading images, but all the posts in each blog seem to have only one link each in that style of forum...

Also, just so you know, Adam helped me with permission to start a thread over there as a new member, which took about 2 weeks in my case, so if you want to be sure to get in before the deadline, then you might need to hurry, because starting and maintaining your blog is part of the rules for it...

and I always love to see what you're up to!

:)

A little facial (eye) animation ( emotion ) for the lady will make the clip absolutely outstanding.

How about avoiding the flame swinging by removing the animation from the right hand ? Then the flame will stay steady when she walks.

What shall I say. The arm motion is deleted but the girl is walking, so the whole body is shaking. I don't know whats wrong with the torch, because when you walk there is no bodypart which is not moving ...

I have a feeling there could be a few key frames left. If you remove the Arm Movement and RESET the Arm  and Hand Position at the frame 1 after doing the whole walk cycle, it may stay steady. Just a thought.

By thedirector1974 - 10 Years Ago
The Question is, why should I want a steady arm holding the torch. This would look very unnatural, because noone would walk like that. Even if you are holding a torch, there will be movement. I don't want to delete that completely.

In a dark cave, it's not a FREE WALK like in a park. It's always a measured walk. One can see barely a few feet. The eyes try to see a little further. The torch shows the way that the eyes want to see. The eyes stay steady, focussed and the movement measured. The hand almost freezes and is aligned with the eyes as the hand/ torch coordinates with the eyes, not the body in general. The torch shows the way that eyes want to see. Hence the torch stays almost steady. It follows the eyes.

I have to say that the standard in this competition is really, really high and there are quite few users who are taking iClone to a new level, which I think is great for everyone concerned.  This is the main reason I'm taking part, as it pushes you to try and make the best film you can make.

I don't see losers in this contest only winners, well done everyone :)

Thanks Peter, this extension is great news.

It will help me out immensely, as due to various circumstances (such as a part-time day job, serious allergy attacks because above-normal pollen levels, and other misery), I have a late start...

Anyway, for those interested, I've started a thread on the Polycount forum, here: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153180.

Hi Everyone:

I've been working on possible contest entries over at the Polycount forum- a couple of characters
The Balrog
Gandalf

I also wrote an article for Computer Graphics World (!) about the contest:
How to Animate without Modelling
By Tarampa Studios - 10 Years Ago
... The contest will start April 25th and close July 10th for final submissions. Winners will be announced on June 30, 2015.

Haha, that's a funny typo, announcing the winners 10 days before the competition closes.

Seriously though, I don't envy the judges... it's like putting Spielberg, Tarrantino, Jackson, Bay and Pixar in the same room, and being asked to choose the best - an impossible task, since they all use the same tools with outstanding brilliance, but for completely different audiences, so they each stand atop their own peak in the mountain ranges of entertainment. And not one of them shall ever be any lesser if one accumulates more awards than any other.

:D

.... and back at the opposite end of the spectrum from everybody else, I'm still polishing up my sets.

Here's some pics from the latest planet; arriving in her little "moon ship", with health & ozone levels running low. She's down to a mere bubble:
https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/1579a7fc-9762-4c84-b796-ba3d.jpg

And in good old fashioned game style, she's made a trade for an upgrade. So here's 3 of the locals taking the new "moon ship" mods out for a test sail:
This took me a whole day and a half to get the flap in the sail cloth just right. At first it was determined to flap like silk - which took only a few minutes to set up, and I could have left it like that and I dare say nobody would notice or even care. But the whole purpose of my projects like this is to learn something new, so I just kept tweakin, and tweakin until I turned silk into canvas...
https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/99bdf9a3-93d0-4539-abe9-1d61.jpg

And now I'm a little stuck on the the next tricky bit - at least for me. Because the natives live in tree-top tee-pees:
(haha, try saying *that* 10 times fast after an hour at a party)...
https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/22ee4701-579e-4a81-8ee1-fd27.jpg

And although they look okay at a distance, the texture maps for leaves and trees are giving me grief on close-up, regardless of whether I use png,
or use a jpg with an opacity map built from scratch - which is what I'm doing with my chin today... giving it a good hard scratch to see if I can solve it another way.

@Wungun,

Thanks for sharing.  A bit heavy on the "flare" for my taste (it obscures some of your hard work), but that's just a matter of personal style.

@Bleetz,

You are correct about your work being on the opposite end of the spectrum; quite a different universe from Wungun's.  :)

It sure is a sugar-filled environment, but it looks like a fun place.  I especially enjoyed the whimsical windmill arms.  I hope you're able to improve the textures to your satisfaction.

By jgrant - 10 Years Ago
@Bleetz - A higher resolution texture, perhaps for the Close Ups? Perhaps also consider a less bright environment to allow for shadow and shade to take the curse of the low-rez textures? LOVE the windmill arms. It's very whimsical and looks great.

@Wungun - Must agree with Justaviking - Perhaps too much flare? I'm all for lensflare - but it seems a little extreme.

Congratulations everyone on your work so far on the Game Animation submissions.  Some incredible work being done by all.

Bingo!.. We must have been on the same wavelength. I tried it last night (my time in eastern oz) and went to bed a very happy camper!

Up again at 3am though, as usual. Having way too much fun with this to sleep :)

By Peter Blood - 10 Years Ago
Bleetz: :)

Sometimes you can add a little depth by constructing a type of 'bump' map. This will give some depth, tho not much. Load the diffuse channel into your paint program and change it to black and white. Then play with the brightness and contrast until you get a blend that is a bit brighter and with higher contrast. (I can't say what will exactly work because each diffuse is different. You'll have to play with it.) Then 'select all' and copy. Now pick a bump map, any Iclone bump map will do. After choosing one load it into your paint program. Paste the B&W version of your diffuse over it. (Be sure to select 'expand canvas' if you are prompted to do so.) Save and then check it out. :)

No promises but, hopefully, this approach will give you a bit more definition.

I'm far from done, but I am happy to present a WIP preview of the first eight scenes:

Details about the production can be found in the WIP thread at:  http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153180.
By GrannyJ - 10 Years Ago
@wungun - I wouldn't want to run into that guy anywhere, good job on creating a really evil dude - but I have to agree with some of the others, the lens flare covers a lot of the detail - not saying you should get rid of it, I think it adds to the "evilness" of the scene, just maybe tone it down a bit; but as always, that's just my personal opinion. Good job!

@Bleetz - I want to visit that world - it looks like a super fun place!  Great set design.  Another thing you can try which will help with contrast & shadows, in your Scene Manager, click on the light that is casting shadows, then on the Stage Tab-Light, go to the Modify panel & scroll down & change the shadow from "Drop Shadow" to "Self Cast Shadow".  Once "Self Cast Shadow has been selected, you will be able to click on the "Blur" checkbox and adjust the shadow opacity & blur ratio.  In addition to bump maps & playing with settings for ambient light and specular settings, you can usually cover a multitude of texturing faux-pas.  The scenes you showed in the pix are simply adorable....  Keep up the great work!

@animagic - well done, my friend!  I am making the assumption you are using TTS for the female voices???  I'm already wanting to see scenes 9 through ???? .  It grabbed my attention & pulled me into the story line...  Way to go, keep it up!!

KUDOS to you all!  Lots of work & it shows.....
By animagic - 10 Years Ago
Granny, thanks. Yes they are all TTS voices due to time constraints. I hope to make this into a proper movie and use real voices.

Many thx. This is one of my favorites to date. I just finished watching your Tuts and they helped reinforce my own working method using key frame animation throughout for realistic motion. The moving holds (ground animation) you mentioned are a very important part of establishing realistic motion and I was happy to see I was on the right path. I love the Direct Puppet Tool as well as the option to edit the Motion Path of all objects.

Many thanks and good luck with your work. It has been a great inspiration and an invaluable resource.

Wow, really great contributions in this contest ! :w00t:

I haven't watched them all yet, but I already like the cute little cow (including the credits) !
The only thing I didn't like: I always pressed the wrong buttons on my gamepad. ;)

@wungun,
very impressive, but in Director's Cut you should have a look at your title (at 1:20) ?
By Capemedia - 10 Years Ago
Very nice animation Wungun, agree with Mike audio levels are a bit up & down and would have liked more epic/dramatic music to keep the tension high.  Also I'm not sure about the title "Beautuiful Theif", was that spelt like that purposely, as I never got it?

Great work though :)

Yea i should have went back and fix all that crap, when i go back and re-release it it will be fixed. Sorry for my bad spelling i am tired i better get some sleep i think i got 2 brain cells left in me right now.

Chill out man, we're just trying to help you be better.  I would be the same if I missed a couple of hours sleep.  Get yourself rested and then go back and fix the typos.

Now worries mate :)

Haha, cool thanks for your kind comments. If you like that one, you may also like my second entry, "High Noon Toons" which was delayed because my rural internet is terrible, even though I pay for the best available...

Ani - I really enjoyed that some great sets, loved the colouring and nicely animated.

Thanks...  Ironically though, I really love the dark rainy dystopian and rich exotic settings amongst the other entries, especially where the atmosphere of the world is portrayed as a dangerous jungle of one form or another... Some of them are so great they really make me ache to try that style too (e.g. in the last few seconds of High Noon Toons I tried a little with the giant robot aliens)... but no matter how hard I try to squeeze out that kind of creative energy, it keeps coming out as freaky HDR rainbows and corny in-jokes.

I must also confess that I can't go anywhere near the gaming industry without a respectful nod to the arcadies and first person games that I grew up with... like Zork, and Leisure Suit Larry - until DOOM, obviously - because in the world before "Doom", often the only images we got of our characters came on the game box and we had to imagine every step of the adventure as it printed out on the screen, letter by letter, like a typewriter, because the best graphics cards could barely handle a digital watch back then...

And I suppose that also gives away my age somewhat, but my kids are young and I'm so glad they can now feast on a wide variety of games that all sprung from those humble roots... and who can't love a good arcadie, like minecraft, angry birds, or even stickman?

I'm so grateful to Reallusion for making *all* of those styles possible for me to make, if only for my own family.
That is such a great treat!

:)

You've got not only the whackiest videos here, but also the whackiest "blog" on Polycount ! :P
So many crazy ideas and jokes, there has to be something strange in the groundwater in Tarampa ?
Are you shure, that you don't have a magic wishing well on your farm ?

Unfortunately, many of the pics are too small and not readable for people in my age !
Due to the restrictions of the Polycount forum I was also not able to download your little helper (whatever this might be)...

So, hopefully you will post your freebies later here in the forum and not over there !?  :Whistling:

ROFL, you may be right. The biggest dam in our main paddock has water that bubbles strangely, but I thought that was just from fat flatulent fish :P

Sure can! (I had trouble seeing images on that site too)... so I just started a link here and included that freebie as in the first post for you here:

Maybe it can help you too, and maybe not, but you're welcome to try it.

A whole bunch of submissions, including mine, have just been added to the Entries page (http://www.reallusion.com/iclone/event/2015-contest/entries.aspx), so it looks we are up-to-date. About fifty entries; the jury will be busy!

This has been a really cool contest, with participants helping each other and revealing their tricks. I hope we will have one like this again.

Congratulations everyone! It's been really cool following everybody's progress. I'm going to go watch all the ones I have not seen yet. :)
Harb40 has his Passion comp just getting underway now, for those who want to keep going. I was very impressed with the forum entries over at polycount from all the participants.

@hami79,
Great clip.  I loved the art style (lighting, colors), and the camera work, editing, and music were all great.  Wonderful job.

I want to apologize. I noticed I have the wrong link to my Polycount thread in my animation submission. The correct link (I hope) is  http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=154984 I'm not very good with threads and posting, and I'm learning as I go. Can someone recommend Youtube videos I can watch to hone my skills on social networking? Thanks, and best of luck to all who entered the contest.
