Here I am!

So much for the fancier neighborhood.   :P

I posted my videos, so now I can pester you.  Don't see it yet... don't see it yet... don't see it yet.

I know it'll be worth the wait, though.  You always post good stuff.

The G5 personas resulted in a good deal of pace-in-place at the ends of paths when we used the right-click/move command. The G6 personas do much less of it. Now, we do have an option of a hands-in-pockets walk for Mason, but you may want him to walk swinging his arms, and also using a G6 persona to minimize/eliminate the pace-in-place.

Here is my quick (not that quick, though) solution.

Hi rampa

Thanks for that.

Can I ask how you got the splendidly gigantic pointer?

All the best.

Those giant cursors are an option in my screen capture software. I wanted a colored dot over the cursor, but strangely, it's not an option on MS Expression Encoder.

Thank you for the tutorial, Rampa.

There are so many controls to learn.  I hope I remember half of this when I need to.

I am using Techsmith's SnagIt v. 12

May I ask what you are using by way of screen capture software?

Thanks in advance

I'm using Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. It went free some years ago.

It has a basic editor, which is pretty handy for tutorials. :)

So IC6 still has foot sliding issues...
and sex change operations are considered corrective options now.
I have a feeling poor Mason is in for some serious bullying down at puppet school.

And with IC6's willful neglect in fixing an ancient issue
we'll now get to be haunted by the foot sliding in Super Rendered definition.

Oh and don't forget you may have to upgrade your damn computer to see the marvelous foot slides in reallusaVision.

Ah progress:hehe:

Rampa,

After rereading my previous post I realize it is harsh... but rest assured you are not a target for my rant and I mean you no disrespect.
I value and look forward to your tutorials as you are always there to help smooth out the bumps in getting the best animation possible.

Again, my apology for coming across that way & hope you can understand the frustration & anger this old foot slide issue causes.

None Taken MovieMachine! :) I hope everyone finds a workable solution soon.

From the future plans they listed for iC6, the whole walkabout system is being redone. I suspect by 6.2 we'll have something totally awesome.

Hope your holidays are great! :D

Hi rampa

Thanks for the heads-up re MS Expression Pro.

I downloaded a copy and will have a look at it.

The big cursor attracted my attention mainly for its use in tutorials too.

Given the tendency of Adobe and Autodesk to favour a dark grey on black lettering scheme, plus a cursor that is only intermittently visible as it sweeps swiftly across from one command to the next, and lastly a screen that is 1920 X 1080 so diminishing everything to the size of a rat's fingernail - a giant cursor is a good idea.

All the best for 2015

Whoaaah! You could use that for sci-fi portals ands stuff like a Stargate or or some kind of Wormhole effect.

how'd you do it?
By Rampa - 12 Years Ago
I just did that last night. Here's my portal. It's a soft-cloth effect. lots of polygons, and the elastic and stretch sliders. Pin it around the edges.

By justaviking - 12 Years Ago
@Rampa,

THAT WAS COOL!!!  :w00t:

That was better effects than half the movies on the SciFi channel.  :)

Great effect. I seriously wonder who decided to have the new avatar walk around with his hands in his pockets. RL was aware avatars don't have pockets right? Hehe. Good stuff rampa.

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your link to the filerenamer application.
Yesterday, I spent the entire day organizing and arranging my content item files.
I had 866 files with vns extension to rename, in 100s of folders/subfolders.

Thank you, very much. :)

Motion stringing and aligning.

A bit wordy and loooooong, but this is a good way to use mocap, or other, motion data that is aligned in different directions/locations.

Sorry, the cursor seems to have vanished. I think you'll be able to follow the hilighting options anyway. I'll have to check my screen capture settings for next time.

It really goes pretty fast when your not talking about it! ;):P

Excellent as always Rampa, thank you for sharing. :)
By Rampa - 11 Years Ago
It should be noted that when you are using any iMotion that has the character moving about that they will not automatically follow the terrain. The terrain following is a function of the "gimbal", or "box" that the character is within.

So when you do a right-click walk, that "box" knows to follow the terrain with it's pivot. The character itself does not. The solution is to put in a key for the Z demension at every significant height change. The HumanIK is based on the character, so the foot contact will work fine.

This is not any different than it was in iC5, just something you need to know. This height info will be stored with your motion when you save it, and then will load in as expected.

So you might want to lay out motions on a flat plain above your terrain, and then set keys to lower your character onto the terrain.

If you happen to have a mocap system and a giant space where you can build or use actual objects, then you can include the traversing them right in your mocap. Imagine working outside and then recreating the terrain you captured on in iClone! ;)

Thank you Rampa for this wonderful tutorial.

While testing ICLONE I had come up with similar issues. Though I don't remember correctly,to resolve it, I perhaps had taken a very crude approach. I used the VISIBILITY ON and OFF with two Avatars. I aligned the 2nd Avatar to the last frame of the 1st Avatar. The 2nd one would take over immediately after the end of the 1st Avatar's motion on the very next keyframe. And I might have played around with the camera a bit to cover it up. But it had worked for a single long shot.

I go for the approach that looks OK to the camera and serves my purpose. But your approach is the right and useful one. Thanks again.

Fantastic and incredibly useful tutorial Rampa.
Thanks a lot for the time to create it and for sharing it.

Just one question.
What would you do when you have plugged in a set of motion to a characters and then figure out that some of transitions between 2 animation clips, placed somewhere in the middle of the whole timeline, are bad (i.e. need these sort of alignment), while others at the beginning and end are ok ?
For example, imagine a sequence of animation clips with this timeline "profile" of transitions GGGBGBGG, where, each letter is the transition between two consecutive animations clip, where "G" stands for a good transition, while "B" for a bad one.
What would you suggest to do ?
It would be nice to use your method to isolate the piece of motions around the "bad" transitions and work them out, without touching the rest of the animations.
Do you think that's possible ?
Thanks

Cheers

Roberto
By Rampa - 11 Years Ago
Hi Roberto,

It's going to be very dependent on what the problem is. If it's just a bad transition that isn't smooth, then the second pass of collecting the clip, reloading it , and cutting it for a new blend might be enough. If it needs rotation and re-positioning, it's going to effect everything after it.

Also, if you have already loaded all the motions with the "Align Actor Motion" checked. Then you can't just adjust a clip (see the first part of the tutorial explaining root position). The root alignment at every frame is not stored with the motion, it is added if the "Align Actor Motion" is checked, so you can do a collect clip and make sure to turn "Align Actor Motion" off before reloading.

Furthermore, you could save the first half and second half as separate clips, and so recombine them.

Are these motions free? Particularly for the Iclone 5 versions of the these vids. Would like to do these exercises.

Here's the motion collection I was using in the tutorial. These were free BVH files that I downloaded and converted. 3DXchange is awesome for batch converting.

There are two folders, "01 Female" and "01 Male". Enjoy! :)

This is a single tress of hair that is posable in the upper section and is also physics weighted for proper draping. The upper section has a skeleton which can be adjusted in the prop animation panel.

Here's a tutorial on using it.

By Mark McKinney - 11 Years Ago
I have a need to show an avatar climbing stairs - I would think with the new physics constraints you could make a simple machine dummy and reach target that would do it - that would be a nice tut if you have time... - thanks
By Rampa - 11 Years Ago
I've actually played with stairs quite a bit. It works best to use an existing walk with foot contact turned on and hidden "foot guides" to help the foot move from one landing to the next. It's easier then all the keyframing and timing that would be needed else-wise.

Something kind of like this:
https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/ac90ee47-df99-40a9-9536-bf71.jpg
The red bits are dummy foot guides. They keep the toes from passing through the front edge of the step when you use a right-click-move command.
