@Roberto: I know the K-Lite codec pack is suggested by RL, but it is not really recommended because it may interfere with codecs already installed, etc.

Are you able to play MTS files on your PC currently? And what do you use?

I'm reading up on AVCHD and one of the issues that stands out is that playback requires more processing power then certain other encodings. I also see that it is an interlaced format, which is something that you definitely don't want as you will see the scan lines.

I see that it uses H264 compression, so you should be able to convert it to a comparable H264 encoding without much quality loss.

Hi Animagic,

my PC is a bit old and suffer a bit with AVCHD, but nevertheless I can open and play them in Sony Vegas.
I think the issue with iClone is that it is a bit limited vs. this format.
As a matter of fact, the .mts/.m2ts file type is not even available in the list of media files that can be assigned to a diffuse channel.
I found a way to bring HD-like quality by using the AVI container and uncompressed format, but the total size is huge (about 150 GB for 3 minutes video clip).
Not a big issue, because once the project is completed and rendered, I can zip the source video files. But still the possibility to read a "native" AVCHD would be quite better.

Btw, my respect for your western clip that you posted a couple of days ago... wonderful job, especially with the cameras.

Cheers

Hi Roberto, thank you for the compliment...:)

I am not an expert, but Sony Vegas has its own collection of codecs that are not necessarily accessible by other applications.

Usually, if you can play the video in Windows Media Player, you can use it in iClone. This has something to do with DirectShow and VFW (Video for Windows).

Now there is a specifc VFW codec that handles H.264 streams and that might work for you. It is recognized in iClone. Here is a blurp about it:

Komisar's unofficial x264 VFW Codec, based on x264 builds, allows you to encode and decode H.264 streams in any Video For Windows compatible program, such as VirtualDub.

x264 VFW Codec allows you to configure the full range of x264 encoding settings through a Windows interface (as opposed to x264 command line commands).

x264 VFW Codec is available in 32-bit and 64-bit builds.

Here is the link to the page: http://www.digital-digest.com/software/x264_VFW_Codec.html.

I don't have .MTS files so I cannot verify, but it might be worth looking into. Best to set a restore point in case you install, just as a precaution.

Hi,

thanks for the suggestion.
I installed the package but in reality I can't find the codec in Sony Vegas.
Right now I am trying the MOV type with HD resolution.
It looks promising because it is readable by iClone and the quality looks also nice.
Still rendering... in 1 hr I will see what's the final fiel size and I will also compare with the AVI rendering type...

Actually I do agree with you there, but for some who want to be able to use specific formats and codecs, installing the K-Lite pack can really help, but you are right to urge caution.

Personally I like to limit the number of codecs I have installed  and would rather convert to those formats rather than install extra codecs to try and support everything.

A the end of the day though it is up to the individual user to decide what is best for their particular situation.
