Hi, folks,
As with all my other starships of late (Galactica, Star Trek) I have made these original series era ships through the work pipeline of Blender, 3DEXChange and iClone.
I really like how these ships turned out. Some have said they look like CG versions of the ships as they might appear in the old Star Trek Animated Series from 1972. I am building these for use in a friend's live action Star Trek fanfilm effort.
Only the Enterprise is a canon-based starship. All the other ships come from design concepts in the old Star Trek Starfleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph.
I also put together some stock footage of the Enterprise for my friend's project. Please don't judge the planetary orbit shots too harshly just yet....I know the proportions of ship vs planet are wrong. :)

The Federation-class Dreadnought
The Saladin class destroyer
The Ptolemy class tug with my own concept of an evacuation transport attached to it

And the animation stock footage of the Enterprise...again, please be gentle with regards to the planetary orbit shots....those were only tests that will be refined in the future :) Click on it to run...

The Enterprise was such a cool concept--and what an icon it is now in modern imagination!
I like what you're doing. I think you can strengthen it by working on your lighting, which seems to me somewhat unconvincing. In particular, the decals seem to self-illuminate too much, but all of your lighting and rendering could stand some more development.
The motor sounds are not working for me; seems better suited to a tugboat on the river. Think how much fun you can have auditioning free sound fx on the web, looking for something better than the TV series ever had.
live long and prosper, dude :)
And yes, I know that no one in space can hear me complain! ;)

WOW! :D Great job..as we all know and are often told..."it can always be better. If you just..." Well of course it can .... ( I've said it myself !;) )
But you have done a great job with these Hats off to you bud! :D:D:D

I'm going to echo the compliments. Your models show the results of a lot of work and attention to detail. I would tone down the glow on the nacelles, though, and the port and starboard lights would ordinarily blink. But I like the animated glow on the nacelles, may I ask how you derived the video?
Also, the Saladin warp nacelle has the Enterprise's hull number.

WOW....thank you all, my friends for your kind comments and indeed criticisms. That's what I seek, and that is what I've gotten....and for that, again, thank you all. :)
To answer some questions regarding this:
Aye, I could stand to down the lighting a wee bit, especially in the windows. I think what I was gunning for was a little bit more window lighting as if the set were illuminated in the same way as, oh, say, 2010: The Year We Make Contact. You could probably see some engine and window lighting, even if the Leonov or the Discovery were only in the shadow area of Jupiter or one of its moons. I'm still experimenting with a lighting scheme that will appeal to everyone...not just the casual movie goer, but the hardcore sci-fi enthusiast as well.
Same thing with the hull lettering....now this was a real fine dance to try and choreograph. Admittedly, it might seem that the hull nomenclature might have been a bit self-illuminatory, but, for an animated series look, it was probably a necessary evil....one that, for the most part, I'm glad to see has paid off. :)
Paunamok West, I darn near spewed Coca Cola all over my laptop with your "In space, no one can hear me complain" quip. OMG, so funny, yet soooo understandable. :)
This is where sci-fi and space fantasy collide. If I had really done the Enterprise the way she should've been done, according to the likes of 2010: The Year We Make Contact....we would likely never see the old girl in the first place. :)
It was a careful balance that I had to make a judgment call on where to draw the line between visibility and reality.
Thank you again, dear friends, for your kind words and honest criticisms. I will take both to heart as best I can. :)

Indeed, the nav lights do blink....perhaps not as fast as they should, but they do blink. :) I derived the video largely through the pipeline of Blender, 3DEXChange and iClone.
In Blender, I build the components for the models, although I assemble the ship pieces there for scale.
Then, in 3DEXChange, I set the pivot points, and the 2-sided nature of the tiling for the components. Also, I auto-smooth them there if there are rounded components to be dealt with, such as warp nacelles, saucer section, etc.
In iClone is where I do the actual hull texturing and nomenclatures. For the hull names, I use "planes" in iClone so I can align them as close as I can to the hull. Same thing with window lighting. :)
It is also in iClone where I do the Bussard collector rotation and the animated nav lights. It is a process to be refined for sure, but I am glad to see that so far, it is paying off. :)
As for the Saladin bearing the Enterprise's hull number, well, ha ha ha, that was probably an oversight on my part in a rush just to try and get out a visible example of the ship. Believe me, I've been working on some sample fleet shots where none of the names or hull numbers were not changed or monkeyed with at all....this, simply to show my friend what I could do in terms of fleet shots. :)

When I tried my hand at making models and wanted animation for the Bussard collectors, I hit upon the method of tying my video camera to an overhead fan, hitting "record," and letting it spin around for a minute or so. Then I edited that footage in Magix Edit Pro (where I first got my demo version of IClone -- "dance with them that brung you") to increase the contrast and turn everything into a shade of red, and then I loaded that video into the "Glow" channel for the collectors, resulting in a much more organic look to the collector glow.

Now THAT never occurred to me, reelcheapfilms. :) That is truly thinking outside the box....well done! :)
Yep, MMEP is what turned me onto iClone, and so it's definitely a part of my movie making pipeline. :)
