The long awaited and highly anticipated iClone5 is almost here! Reallusion has once again raised the bar on affordable, do-it-yourself animation with the coming launch of iClone5. Since 2009, Reallusion has been receiving tons of feedback and wishful features from all over the animation industry. We are now very excited to announce that this revolutionary, animation dream tool is almost here. http://www.reallusion.com/event/11-iclone5preannounce/default.asp

In this case they will just need the plugin to use it with iClone5.

Oh no.
You do not need an XBox 360!
The Cinect is also sold seperatly. In Germany it is about 100€.
In fact, buying an XBox 360 bundeled with a cinect would be a mistake! Because in that bundle no external power supply is included.
In the stand alone box (only the Cinect), the PSU is included :)
@Peter For I am buying a new craphics card: Does iClone 5 takes care of NVidias PhysX engine?
I am struggeling bettween a 6870 and a 560Ti ;)

yaRincewind is right... you got to have the power supply to use it with USB.
In my area the Kinect is $149 at Gamebox with the power supply. There are some cheaper on the net here and there by searching.

The only thing more incredible than the reliability, power, and ease of use of iClone may be the pricing. For such a tiny fraction of the price of the major animation solutions, you get a great deal of their power--but the ease of use is surely the most important of all aspects. I don't know how else to say it: it's staggering. :w00t:
I'm so looking forward to iClone 5. Every iteration of iClone has introduced MAJOR advances in animation power. Having been through this four times already, I'm confident this will change the game all over again! :hehe:

If you purchase a standalone Kinect device it should come with its own power supply which will be required to use it with a PC setup rather than a new X-Box. In the UK they can be picked up for about £100 - £120.

I probably don't have much right to reply with a speculation, but my guess is the existing avatars will work with this improved FK/IK functionality. It's a bit of shock to me, though, to learn anybody still cares about G1 avatars. ...Why???

If the Iclone 5 Avatars are Kick *** then this program is gona turn heads.... So maybe Iclone 6 could look at getting FBX characters into Iclone and use these new features... If that could happen think of who would buy this .... EVERY POSER AND DAZ USER for sure ! or maybe a new 3Dexchange might hold the key to that ...:D

well my friend.. it's like this.. i love the newer avatars(G2 and G3) and have quite a collection for my entertainment. but, i care about my G1 avatars too. consider all the hard work that went into creating them.. and some of them are pretty good. out of respect for the creators of those once loved beings.. it would be nice to be able to use them once in a while.. they too, can still serve a purpose.. and even though the G2 and G3s are far better design and quality... well, i know people that still have real old cars in the driveway.. cars that date back to the 50s... anyway... thanks peter for the info..

Is that a collective groan I hear coming from the Moviestorm crowd????
Any one of the major new features would be an awesome upgrade but even with physics (and ya'll know I LOVE physics) and the easier animation its the render that has me excited! The new lighting might just be what the doctor ordered to bump iClone further up the production pipeline.

I must say, very impressive new version. And it is right on time for Machinima film makers, watching all major game engines goes free (UDK, Crytek Sandbox next month and dedicated Cinema version soon, even Source). My main concerns, and hopes, for iClone5 are in camera handling department. Maybe some inside info on that?

So we get some of the awesomeness of Motionbuilder with this new release. I went and found the white paper on HumanIK at Autodesk. HumanIK is middleware for game animation creation, and is what iClone 5 uses.

Enjoy!:)

If IC5 will use HumanIK system native for Autodesk Motion Builder (and this means that for proper simulation avatar 5 bone structure should be compatible with Motion Builder human template), can CCDs expect some method of exporting motions created in Motion Builder into IC5? It will be very useful.

Even IC4 has very good texture options (especially Normal bump support). It has practically full set of options existed in Autodesk 3ds Max (except Displacement) So problem not in the support of texture options , but how successfully You managed to use them to avoid "Quake 1 look". ;)

Yeah, I know about the texture option. But I think allowing the use of shader and more option is good, like UDK texture / material editor or something.
I can wait to see what latest 3D Exchage have for us.

Will I qualify for a new copy of IC5 although I bought it through a UK distributor? I hope so!! If so how will it work? When you register it?Hi Dark Angel The pre launch special offer applies from now until iClone5 is released in September. If you have purchased from anywhere other than directly from Reallusion then you will need to contact Customer Support to get confirmation if you are eligible for the free upgrade offer. Please use the link below. http://www.reallusion.com/CustomerSupport/User/QForm.aspx Thanks. This what I mean I bought IC4 the day IC5 it was announced. It shoulld be here tomorrow hopefully. It sounds as though you are not too hopeful for me. Anyway I have contacted support to see what they have to say. I will keep everyone posted. :w00t: Fair play to Peter and RL support for getting back quickly. This was there response as it may help others asking questions:- Thank you for contacting Reallusion. If you have purchased iClone 4 Pro version from anywhere other than directly from Reallusion from 7/27/2011 until iClone5 is released in September, you need to send us your receipt for checking, and register your iClone 4 Pro in your member account. Then we will send you iClone 5 Pro for free after it launch. Or if you have purchased iClone 4 Pro before 7/27/2011, then you will get a 50% upgrade discount when iClone5 is released. Thanks for your understanding. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions. Best Regards, Jollen Technical Support Reallusion Inc. Thanks again support:P

Ok, my email is bursting with questions from people wanting to get IC5. The main questions they asked were these :
1) Are you sure the 200 dollar content purchase offer is for people who don't own IC yet ?
2) If we buy 200 dollars worth of marketplace points without owning iclone, can we just leave those points there untill we get our free IC5 ?

Bravo, Reallusion team! You managed to scare my entire family with my giddy laughter this morning when I finally managed to check my e-mail. :hehe:
I am DEFINITELY waiting a bit to animate my film... I don't care if I drag out the release date for this! Oh sweet ambient occlusion!!! Post-effects!!!! TOO MANY GOOD THINGS!!! :w00t:
I do have one little question: Is there any word regarding support for other systems (Mac, Linux, etc.)? I have a friend who is really interested in the program, but can't use it because she only has a Mac.

YES! YES! YES! :D
This is the logic that I forgot when I'm asking Reallusion a question. If new user could just buy content worth 200 and get IClone for free, why not current user just need to buy content worth 100 to get the upgrade for free? Call it pre-upgrade if you need.
Peter, please ask this question to them please?

I have to say that I'm really impressed with all the new features. From what I see, you've addressed all except 2 of my major concerns with the current version of iClone. In all of those cases you've actually exceeded my expectations. The animation, physics, and lighting/shadowing are just fantastic. My 2 remaining concerns are better terrain system, particularly the texture resolution, and a faster, more robust rendering engine. Particularly when I look at cryengine loading massive, gorgeous scenes into their editor in real-time with silky smooth response I can't help but be jealous of that. But not to take away from what was done for this release. I really do think it's a major step up and I think iClone is now a truly viable movie-making solution. Congrats, Reallusion!

I suppose the previous (G3 G4) characters will be compatible with new character animation tools ? What would be the update cost for previous iClone Pro users ? Thanks a lot, Gabriel

I believe it's G5 characters with the new version. G4's never got a proper body.
Though I agree, the "new look" characters hopefully won't be a template for them. While I know my G3's still work, IMHO, the "new looks" were the wrong way to go because they don't look realistic enough for my story telling purposes.

Thanks for the Mac question answer, Peter. I hope they consider it as an update release after 5 comes out. I was about to ask about 64-bit and multicore, but someone already did (I am considering buying a 64-bit system now... that was the one condition I was waiting over).
To answer the folks asking why they don't put an offer to people who have the previous iClone where they only need to purchase $100 USD worth of stuff is quite simple: If you purchase $200 worth of stuff, you end up with both the stuff AND the program. It's a more than fair deal already. Asking them to cut the deal down to $100 is DIFFERENT than the already-existent 50% off the program because you would then end up with $100 worth of stuff AND the program vs. the program. It wouldn't be fair to Reallusion, as you would 'up' them by $100 in the end!

Hi Peter, Just wanted to let you know the new features in iClone look very promising indeed, it's finally getting to the point where you can do some serious productivity with pro quality output. I wanted to also take this time to reitterate a few suggestions that I made in previous posts: 1) Mapping each mouth phonic to each alphabit key so you can type in each letter and position the corrisponding mouth shape below the sound wave graph with the ability to adjust the strength of each one for faster fine tuning of lip-syncs after puppeteering. 2)The ability to pull individual points faces and edges on the primitives, with the ability to use presets such as bend, twist, taper, and skew. 3) Subdivision and/or tesselation at render time to increase polly face count for smoother edges that won't show low polly elements like blocky edges. Other than that so far so good this looks like the iClone I invisioned I was buying back in 2007 and more (still in awww of the Kinect implementation), great work RL team.

SSS, polygon tessilation and displacement... What? Did someone say DirectX 11? Looks like this is still using some DX9 stuff, butI can wait for the next version fr that. It's important they get the animation and thigns down first. Plus I'm pretty sure this version can handle higherpoly objects in general, so things should work a little nicer.

I believe the answer is going to be:
1) no 2) no 3) yes
lets see if im correct when Peter answers. :P
However, you can get some pretty good skin from iclone if you have hires textures and proper map types, like specular. See the last image i created in my gallery.

I asked this in a different thread but maybe I should have asked it here. If I upgrade to iClone 5, does that mean I can't run iClone 4 anymore? Does upgrade mean one version or the other, not both. I will probably take advantage of the Content purchase of $200. Especially if I need a separate license for both. I know that once I get use to iClone 5, I will probably only use that version, but I can always upgrade the iclone 4 license later and have two license to work with.

The iC5 release looks extremely powerful. :) Based on this thread, there is a lot to aspire to. I was wondering about Facial Morph. It sound from the different posting of test Face products in City that iC5 may have more support for Facial deformations or Morphing? Peter, Is there anything new you can share with us on that front :) Cheers!

jasonjbrown (8/1/2011) Hello Peter,
I asked these questions a couple of days ago but I guess you missed them?
1. Will there be subsurface scattering? 2. Will there be any changes to the way skin is rendered? 3. Will stereoscopic 3D continue to be supported?
I believe the answer is going to be: 1) no 2) no 3) yes lets see if im correct when Peter answers. :P However, you can get some pretty good skin from iclone if you have hires textures and proper map types, like specular. See the last image i created in my gallery. Cheers, Stuckon3d I thought I answered this a while ago... Lemme see if I can find the post.
Hm guess I didn't... or at least not directly. Sorry about that. So no, no SSS for right now. That's ok though. SSS isn't going to make or break your story, if anything it could throw you even closer into the uncanny vally if not used correctly along with some good animations. So it's good they got that worked out. lol looks like I'm repeating myself.

I noticed in the Kinect preview video that the actor did a 360-degree spin and the iClone plugin was able to capture it properly.
This makes me think that you're using the Microsoft driver to capture data from the Kinect, rather than the PrimeSense driver. The Microsoft driver is supposed to be much better at predicting and compensating for occluded motions. The PrimeSense driver will send the occluded arm/leg flailing until it can resych.
So, if the plugin is indeed using the Microsoft driver, does that mean that the plugin will not be available until Microsoft makes the Kinect SDK available for commercial use? They haven't released any information about when that will be. Will the plugin be delayed until then?
Or, is the plugin using some other driver?

The content you purchase does not have to be for iClone soowning iCloneisn't a requirement. You can be a CrazyTalk Animator user and purchase $199.95 (excluding taxes) of content and still receive a free copy of iClone5 Pro.
It`s still not clear. The meaning of this question is important for people that are coming new to Reallusion...[snip] You don't need to own ANY Reallusion software to take part in the $199.95 Content Store offer. Any brand new customer can purchase $199.95 or more of content or DA points and receive a free copy of iClone5 Pro when it is released. I hope this clears up any confusion. :)
Question: Does the "purchase $199.95 or more of content or DA points" have to be made in one order? Or can this amount also be spread out in two or more separate orders between now and the "official launch date" (until Sept. 15)?

I'll buy iClone 5 and will use it but now I want to upgrade my videocard (ATI RADEON X1950 PRO 256MB PCI-E). Could you tell me the modern models which will be better for iClone 5 (for better visualization with support better versions of Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders, HDR ... etc.)? /I ask you about models which will be better comparing with modern videocards but not with my dinosaur of course :) / I saw this file http://www.reallusion.com/iclone/GraphicsCard.pdf , but there are a lot of old models and no iClone 5 columns in the table. I intend to pay $300-650 for card and then use it with iClone 5, 3dsMax, Maya, Poser and AfterEffects.

From now on until the official launch date - if you purchase an accumulated content value of $199.95 or more, from the Content Store (DA point is included), then you will get a free copy of iClone5 PRO edition.

If iClone 5 features new G5 type characters, would there be any point for someone new to iClone to, for example, purchase G3 CloneCloth tools right now?
Will it even be possible to create G3 type characters with iClone 5's Avatar builder? Or are the only human characters we can make with it the new G5 type?

answer to Question 1: If you wanna make more G3 Characters than YES! G3 characters are still being use a lot and still being supported in iClone5. If you plan on making G3 Characters then that's enough reason to buy it. If you plan on NOT making any G3 charactrers at all, then the obvious answer would be no.
answer to question 2: I don't see why not, you can still make G1 and G2 characters in iClone 4. G3 characters are still supported in iClone 5 and should work fine. So assumingly, yes, you can still make G3 characters in iClone 5. If you can load G3 Characters in iClone 5 then that would mean you can make G3 characters. Ofcourse I am just assuming, It would be very retarded otherwise... :)

Right now the fastest Desktop card on the market is the Nvidia GTX590. If you can find one in your price range then this would be an excellent buy and will also remain a competitive card for many years. Alternatively you could go for the Nvidia GTX580 which will be somewhat cheaper but without that much of a drop in performance. Both cards will give excellent performance in iClone5. Of course if you do intend to use the card for heavy use in 3DS Max and Maya you might want to consider a Workstation card instead. Personally though for my own use I choose to go with a Desktop model for iClone5.

Fablefox, even iClone4 normally support 2K texture resolution. For ex. all avatars (body and cloths) from my Photo Realistic 2 Male series have 2K texture resolution and iClone 4 process them in real time without problems. But ofc You should have good Video Card for this.

Would it be possible that the $199.00 amount be applied toward the purchase of crazy talk animator (program) and additional content items to make up the difference.....even though it is not part of the content store proposition ? - just asking - it seems that-for me- the facial attributes of this program would better support the Iclone product and be a great addition - since motion is improving so should facial expressions - just thinking !

WOW! This looks incredible!! Just to recap, I have a few questions (sorry Peter if you've already answered these. I just read through the first 11 pages of replies and didn't find what I was looking for.) Anyway...
1. I own CTA PRO and it appears that if I buy $199.95 worth of content for that, then I can get IClone 5 PRO for free...correct?
2. I also have purchased IClone 4 PRO (but it's on my son's computer).can I "upgrade" to IClone 5 and have it on my computer?
3.Can I import pictures of my family/friends to use in IClone 5? (ex. Can I animate a picture of my dad from the 80's to do ridiculous things?)
4. Will this be a "single seat license" product or will I be able to install it on both my laptop and my desktop computers?
Thanks in advance Peter (and all involved).

The spending of DA points in the Marketplace doesn't count towards the $199.95.
2. I also have purchased IClone 4 PRO (but it's on my son's computer).can I "upgrade" to IClone 5 and have it on my computer? Yes you can install your copy of iClone5 on any computer you wish.
3.Can I import pictures of my family/friends to use in IClone 5? (ex. Can I animate a picture of my dad from the 80's to do ridiculous things?) Yes you can use a photo of your Dad's head and put this an iClone avatar and then make him do ridiculous things. However Reallusion is not responsible for what your Dad may do when he finds out. :D
4. Will this be a "single seat license" product or will I be able to install it on both my laptop and my desktop computers?
Unless there is a policy change between now and release time (unlikely) you will indeed be able to put iClone5 on both your Desktop and Laptop.Hope this helps.

Would it be possible for Reallusion to make this ceiling higher for iClone 5 (perhaps to 4 or 5k)? Sometimes people want very odd resolutions or sometimes I want to export a very large picture of my iClone screen so people can see small detail throughout. I personally don't see that such a change would be all that difficult, aside from the image saving process taking longer.

Sorry, I´m not Peter, but the question was answered I think. If I´m right, you can continue to use iClone 4.
But you will be able to use iClone 5 on two Computers (as long as it is not at the same time), so you could both use iClone 5.
Important is, that you use the same eMail Adress for iClone 4 as you use in iClone 4, so you can continue using your allready bought content.

By Magique - 14 Years Ago

In addition to my question about shadows for lights other than directional, I'm curious if the terrain/collision issue has been solved in iClone5. The issue I'm referring to is as follows: If you add a prop to the scene that has a ceiling and a floor and add it to the terrain with collision, actors that are following the terrain will pop to the top of the prop instead of walking on the floor. The best example is a corridor prop that has walls, floor, and ceiling. The actor should walk on the floor inside the corridor and not pop onto the outside top of the prop. I know this is more complex collision detection than what is currently implemented in iClone, but I know it's not an insurmountable problem. I was playing around with the Unity3D game engine recently, and it handles this issue with no problems. I actually used the same props as I did in iClone4 and it performed correct collision detection/terrain following as I would expect. Currently the only way to solve this is to put a bunch of invisible walls and floors throughout the scene to match the areas needing collision and add those to the terrain. This is tedious and time consuming. So hopefully this is solved in iClone5. If not, I would like to add this to the wish list.

But just as you can do in iClone4, you can separate the prop into those parts you wish to add to terrain and leaving the others as props. This way the avatar will react correctly. What you do have in iClone5 that isn't available in iClone4 is the ability to use physics, direct puppet and the new foot contact feature to better handle situations like this. You will find iClone5 now enables numerous ways to overcome hurdles like those you mention.

I think it should be up for serious consideration to make this work better in future versions.

I have found that when I convert a prop to terrain, it defaults to using a bounding box for navigation. By unchecking the "bounding box" in the right side panel for the terrain, your character can follow through tunnels and holes, but still be navigating terrain (snapping).

What do you suggest they do? I thought if you don't use bounding boxes, the prop would have a collider of just the prop itself.
Often in video games (and I'm sure in nonrealtime renderers as well) they'll use invisible stand-in meshes as collision meshes to make things easier and go faster. So what you're doing is raelly not that far from the ordanary. You can always take the mesh into another 3D program and make a sort of bounding mesh from it.

@swooooop I'm not a 3D modeler and I don't know how to use Blender. It's easier for me to put invisible floors in the thing than it is to learn Blender. For me anyway. @dreamcube017 As I pointed out earlier, if I take the same meshes and put them in Unity3D and tell it to turn on collision, the object behaves properly. I've done a lot of 3D graphics programming myself and I know this problem is not unsolvable. Why not just make it work correctly? I'm using iClone as a filmmaker and the easier it is to plop 3D content into the program and have it work correctly then the better for me and the better for Reallusion.

I understand what you mean now. This would be cool.
However, try bringing a halfpipe into Unity3D and see how nice the collision acts. Bring something in from Sketchup and see how well collision acts. You'll get a rude surprise.

I've tried modeling a halfpipe (yes confave object) in C4D with splines and the same thing still happens. It was made out of quads, hut Unity splits it into triangles anyway. So I still don't get why it didn't work.
CryEngine has a plugin for Sketchup and that's a game engine...

Are DA-points in- or exclusive tax?
I have bought for 210 dollar DA-points. Do i get YES or NO IC5 for free or do i need buy more points? :w00t:

As long as your Content Store/DA Point purchases total $199.95 or more before any taxes are added then yes you will receive your free copy of iClone5 Pro. Remember it is the prices that are advertised in the Content Store or the DA Points purchase page that count. Taxes are added later at checkout for some users depending on the country they are in. Any taxes that are added at checkout are not included towards the $199.95. Hope this clears up any confusion.

All of these nice new features in iC5 are useless if iC5 doesn't include the following, as already requested many times: 1) An electronic User Manual integrated within the Program, with an Alphabetical Index & Glossary of Terms, written in the English Language & not a word for word Electronic Program Translation. I'll see if I can include Screenshots of Pinnacle Studio's NLE Program as an example, which is common in most, if not all, Video Editing per se, Programs. 2) An "Instant Save" Feature, that takes a "Snapshot" of a Project several times per second, in the event of iC "Hanging" &/or unexpectedly Closing. Giving 3 options when Re-launching iC5: a) Open the current Project (At the point when it "Hanged"/Closed. b) Open another (Existing) Project c) Open a New Project. The above Feature has been available in in Pinnacle Studio NLE Program for 5 years. Having 1) & 2) above, should save me & many others, I guess, from spending 99% of my/our time in Editing on a "Trial & Error" basis. There have been very many "Complaints" re; the lack of "Storyline" Clips produced in iC. Two of the reasons for that would be the lack of 1) & 2). You need to be like "A Dog with a bone", to get anything done with iC within a reasonable Timescale. It should be possible for all iC Users to complete at least 5 entertaining Storyline Clips of eg; 5 minutes each year, to get their money's-worth. Great Program, apart from lack of 1) & 2), which are basic Program Features, I would have thought.

I agree the documentation could use some work, although it's a bit overdramatic to say these new features are "useless" without an integrated help system. I find the online reference more than suits my needs, although it does need to be correct, and a bit more verbose in it's details.

I prefer a PDF for help and that's already provided. The online help is pretty much the same as what is being asked for in integrated help. I'm not sure what is gained from an integrated version versus online version. Because it comes up in a browser instead of an offline window doesn't seem like it would matter to me.

Instead of Launching your PDF Reader, you would either press F! Key or ? (Help/Manual) within iC Program. Then you would have both the Program & Integrated Manual Open at the same time & switch windows whilst Editing. That would significanly speed-up the learning process. The above being said, I believe Warlord is in the process of producing a Project based Tutorial book. In the meantime, IMO, Gabe's Production Diary Images Tutorial is the best I've seen for beginners & Intermediate, alike. All you need to do, is substitute Gabe's Props & Characters with your own & your own Storyline, to get that first Storyline completed as quickly as possible. Otherwise you'll give up. As many have done & still do & remain stuck in just doing music Projects. Having done the above, IMO, the next stage would be to follow Stuckon3D's Tutorials, which give a full & complete in depth analysis of what can be achieved with iClone. If you want quick & "dirty";) immediate video Tuts for a particular problem, then Mark & Crickey are your men;)

I've only posted here a few times, and many of them may have sounded like I had complaints or serious reservations about iClone. It is true that I am not really sure what I would be getting into with iClone... I do not like having to buy content, and I really don't like having my options limited by what other programs I may also own.
But I just couldn't stand it any longer. I don't care if it does everything I want it to do, it just looks fun. (Just being able to add a sound to an object has given me dozens of new ideas!)
So... I just placed my order a few minutes ago. I bought what seems to me the best (and most well hidden) iClone deal of all: iClone 4 Pro, 3DXchange Pro, three sets of CloneCloth and the Character Creators' Resource Pack for US $399.
If I make use of half of it, I will have spent the money more wisely than I usually do! :)

@Moogaloonie I can understand your reluctance to buy content. (Some of the articles are far overpriced, then sold at "reduced" prices that are still ridiculously, jarringly expensive.) One of the things I loved about Sims2 was the fact that there is a large, international community out there that is willing to put lots of time and work into creating Sims figures, clothing, accessories, cars, houses, whole towns, yet is gracious enough to share the fruit of their efforts FOR FREE with others in the Sims community (who do the same in return, if willing and/or able). ("Mod The Sims" immediately comes to mind.) If only a similar site were available for iClone fans! :/ Wish the iCloners weren't so greedy and money-grubbing, LOL.

Answered 2. I dont own anything other than iClone for animation. I use Paint Shop Pro since bout 1994. I also, until recently, used a sound program that came out in 1995. I dont even use CrazyTalk unless a stone needs to have a conversation with one of the surrounding trees which is then embedded into iclone. I dont own Maya, Poser, or any of the other progs. I dont even use 3DXchange. (GASP!)
Unless you're going into heavyweight avatar modelling, most of which can be handled inside iClone anyway facially and physically within reason, I dont see it helps an animator.
There are two kinds of people I feel in Reallusion Worlds. Animators, and Modellers. A kind of semi-communicative symbiosis in which one screams out the wants, and the other tried hard to deliver them.
Answered 1. I cant imagine how massive iClone would be if it included everything. I make short films from inside a private Americans Hospital Reception Area all the way to Trolls who live in enormous houses under the floorboards. I think you'd have to be God to cater for the degree of diversity required especially in this Animated iClone Scenario.

I don't mind having available content to purchase, it can come in handy when you are doing a project on a deadline and you find an item you need is already available for sale. I was referring to having to buy content because it was created in a way that would make it very difficult for you to do it on your own, even if you knew how and were willing to take the time. When it is simply a choice of spending your money or your time, available content is a good thing. When I need a $2000 program to make my own prop for use in a $200 program I can get a little frustrated. As I'm mostly interested in sci-fi vehicles and environments, I chose iClone for the real-time rendering and consider the figures mostly a bonus. How well I ultimately like it will depend on how easily I am able to get my own models imported in and looking right.

Props you can get for free, and lots of 'em! The only reason you need the high-dollar programs is to create your own "standard" characters. Props and environments can come in (through 3DExchange) as .obj files, which you can get tons of free from sites like renderosity, 3dwarehouse, and others.

I know how to get free props, but I'm a designer so making props and environments is a big part of what I do! Can someone confirm then that no other programs are needed to add springs to a prop? I really thought I'd read you needed Max to do that also.

Two options for ya, both are free: -Blender -Sketchup
Lots of big-brained designers who took all those collage classes and learned $2000.00 programs can easily use Blender; it's just as confusing, but it's completely free and pretty darn good! I have no doubt it has all the features you're looking for since I can hardly understand the first thing in it.
Sketchup is for everyone else who isn't interested in being professional office-chair warmers. Simple, streamlined interface... rather cruddy texture jobs... etc. Even someone with no 3D experience can make pretty good props using a pipeline from this to 3DXchange to iClone... I started out making stuff in here and bringing it over with ALMOST NO EXPERIENCE in 3D... heck, I first encountered 3D in a standard Tech Ed class a few years back, and haven't seen it since I started working with Sketchup just two years ago.
As for springs, Reallusion DID release a FREE 'auto-shop' kit of various props (springs, faux doors, etc.) for making animated vehicles. Those springs should work.
With the implementation of physics with iC5, nearly anything else in physics like such will be possible. Soft-body tubes for ropes, even maybe realistic water thanks to carefully tuned soft-bodies or such!

I still haven't make myself clear. I know how to model, and am not looking for a modeling program. The springs in the auto-shop are simply a linkage between the various rigid auto parts. I want to make something like the springy antenna prop, or the sci-fi "tentacles" from the 2nd hair pack. I simply want to be able to attach a spring solver to a mesh of my own making. I don't want to have to use 3DSMax/Maya to do it. Is this at all possible?
It's already been stated that objects can either be soft or not. Soft-body is not a substitute for spring solver on figures. It will indeed provide many new possibilities, but it apparently cannot be used to make things like bouncy ears/antennas from part of a single mesh.

Well, since you don't have iC5, you can't say that of soft or rigid figures... just wait until iC5 comes out and then you'll know for sure with the Demo.

Samulis (9/9/2011) Well, since you don't have iC5, you can't say that of soft or rigid figures... just wait until iC5 comes out and then you'll know for sure with the Demo.
I bought iC4, so I should be able to find out with the full version. But the question has been asked and answered. You can use soft body solver to make things like pillows, stuffed animals, bouncing balls... You will not be able to designate parts of a figure to be both soft and rigid. You can attach a soft object to a rigid one, which is very useful... But it is not the same as placing a "spring" within a creature's ears or antennae and getting spring dynamic.
Sure there is a generic antenna, but it seems to make a similar prop yourself requires more than just iClone4/3DXChange. No one has told me otherwise, but I can't seem to get a confirmation either.
But since we were talking about iClone5, perhaps it is a bit OT of me to be asking how to do this in iClone4, in this thread.

It's not that I am reluctant to buy content... Imagine you want to make a Batman movie. You ask, "how do I make a cape for my batman". You are told "there is a similar cape in the content store". Well, a similar cape is not what you wanted, and no one will tell you if you need another program to make the precise one. Or you ask "how do I make a hair prop that I already have into a springy object like those in the content packs?", and you may be told to buy the content pack. Again, the pack won't have the hair you are looking to make dynamic, and your question goes unanswered. That is in no way saying content packs aren't useful.
I suppose most people here aren't modelers. I respect that. Many modeler shun using pre-made figures, while I have no objections. However, for those of us who are modelers and only want iClone for animation/rendering, being told to buy content that we would rather make ourselves is avoiding the issue.

iClone is purely a rendering/animation program, so you can't create any content within it. There are tons of opportunities for customizing content, but it always has to have some base model (either from within iC itself, or imported from another program) to start from.

Many users completely forget about the 3D Block system that is part of iClone4/iClone5. Picking from the large variety of different shaped blocks included it is possible to make almost any basic prop required. All you need to do is resize and reshape the various parts then attach them together. Then you can add textures to finish your prop. It does take a little time and patience but it can be done all within iClone. Using this method you can make furniture, houses, cups, glass containers the list is endless. And the best part is that you can even add physics to your home made prop in iClone5. :)

Well I have read those, and they do seem to indicate that I'd need 3DSMax just to make a spring prop. I think restricting that information makes little sense, actually. I may or may not ever choose to sell content. My concern buying iClone was that I would find it unnecessarily difficult to get my own models into it. It's not as bad as I feared, but 3DSMax is quite an expensive and complex program to buy just to make a spring prop (when nothing in iCLone's online features descriptions indicates the "feature" is only available to content developers, content buyers and those able to make do with the few included props). Springs are listed as a feature of the program, not as a feature of certain props. There is a big difference.
My question I guess is why 3DSMax only? Why not a cheaper option, like blender, GMax or XSI mod tool? Does anyone know if the 3DSMax features needed to make spring objects are in GMax tool as well? It looks to only need a few basic tools - which should all be part of 3DXChange, IMHO.

Well obviously. 3DXChange is a program for creating iClone content, right? I already have models and modeling programs (3D-Coat, zBrush, Wings, blender, Hexagon, Carrara, etc.). There is simply no way to add springs to a figure/prop without Max, a program I do not use. I am specifically referring to fbx figures brought in through 3DXChange (though it should be possible to add them to iClone figures as well if a person wanted to).
I understand that iClone standard is aimed at people who just want to use included and purchased content with a few options for customizing. I bought iClone PRO/3DXChange, and given the cost I feel I should be able to use listed features with my own models.

I agree, you make tons of great props with the included "primitive" shapes - but in reality that is still customizing content. To actually create an entirely new prop, you need some other program capable of working at the mesh level.

Umm... I didn't say anywhere that it was a modeler. It outputs files in iClone format, so it is indeed used for making iClone content. Please don't be pedantic. If you want to be helpful, tell me something I do not already know. It should be clear from my previous posts (9/02/2011) that I knew the difference between iClone and 3DXchange (and that neither were modeling programs) when I bought them.
I find it frustrating that everyone seems to think I do not know what I am trying to do. I just want to know how to do it without buying a very expensive program I have never had any desire to use. I am not trying to be rude.

I even edited that once and it still sounds impolite. Sorry for that.
I didn't want to make this a discussion on buying content, or 3D Studio or anything like that. I am a new user and I had a question I thought would be easy for someone to answer.
I'm into sci-fi. Mostly cyberpunk and giant robot stuff. I design my own vehicles, mecha, settings etc. I didn't buy iClone to avoid having to learn modeling, I bought it because it looked to have many nice animation features and very fast GPU based rendering. As I am also interested in app development, I decided it made sense for me to look for a way around high poly modeling and photo-realism. I found I was wasting too much time setting up complex materials and that any models I would want to make should be usable in a game engine if I ever wanted to use them for that. I decided on a machinima approach... (I plan to make the models with a medium poly-count, and use normal mapping to make them look as good as possible without worrying if they are "perfect") I looked at a few game engines, mainly Unity and Shiva (my first choice for making apps) and also Unreal Indie. It seemed all three would need me to do a lot more scripting than I'd prefer, the lighting in Unity indie wasn't adequate (no shadows) while UDK would require licensing if I did anything that made me a profit. iCLone looked to me like a combination of Poser/D|S and a game engine. The info I could find made it seem like I could get characters in from Daz Studio via 3DXChange FBX import. I just keep finding little things that seem to be restricting me from using it with the same freedom I would a regular animation tool. I am used to having the option of buying content, and I appreciate it, but if I had to use the same stuff as everyone else it would not be so much a tool to me as it would be a toy.

See! Many many people would like to have the ability to use ALL of the animation tools within Iclone, and are not accustomed to not being able to use ALL of the animation tools on their imported content.
Unhooking the animation tools from their bondage to the Iclone bone structure would give Iclone a big step up! They want to be free! They will still be "safe within the paddock," but then they can at least run around in there!

I don't think understanding your question is the problem - you just can't seem to accept the answer - "NO, you cannot do what you are trying to with with just iClone and 3dexchange." If your modelling program is not capable of creating the spring effect, then you either need to get a new modelling program, or not use the spring effect. Those are your only options.

I don't recall anyone specifically saying it clearly before. I said it looked to me that it was that way, but I wanted someone to confirm it for me. So thank you, that is an answer I can accept even if you are right that I don't like it. (BTW, I never said I wanted to do it with just those two programs... I asked if there was any way to do it without buying Max.)
I suppose my workflow is to blame... I model in one program, texture, rig and render in others. I feel a bit misled by the information on springs though... They should not be listed as a feature of the program and should, I feel, be described under props. A feature is something you can use, and without 3DS Max or Maya you can only use them if you have a prop that already contains them.
Doesn't matter how many nice programs you may have, it always has to be the one you don't use.

Since we have to wait (ca.) another two weeks before the launch of iClone5, it would be greatly appreciated if you could help kill the time by posting a VIDEO illustrating how SMOOTH the automatically generated transitions actually are ("Natural Motion Seamless Motion Connection"). Others have requested the same, as yet to no avail. There might be certain transitions that need working on, which wouldn't escape our eagle eyes. Whatever the case, I'm sure you could use the feedback. :) Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Peter. (I noticed the above question was answered elsewhere today, under: "When, When, When?", LOL.) So we can reckon with the launch some time in the last week of September? :crying: Wish we knew the exact DAY on which it will be launched, since I have postponed all further projects (and downloads) for weeks now in anticipation. (50% off is just fine with me.) ;)

hutchartwork (9/15/2011) Thanks, Peter. (I noticed the above question was answered elsewhere today, under: "When, When, When?", LOL.) (50% off is just fine with me.) ;)Unfortunately its not possible to give an exact day just yet. Barring any last minute hiccups we are on schedule for the last week of September. And on your previous question - there will also be video tutorials and showcases coming along to coincide with the release. :)

Kinect actually tracks the position of players' bodies. Move only tracks the little glowing ball.

The long-awaited last week of September has finally arrived! Yesterday Reallusion uploaded various iClone5 tutorials and product demos (see moseswong's posting "iClone 5 New Videos" from today), so it appears this seemingly endless wait (September 2011 feeling like two months instead of one) is drawing to a close... :w00t:
