a bit confuse cos i'm a big fan of iclone but i saw daz animation which look a bit more realistic so may be a combination of the 2.
By planetstardragon - 15 Years Ago
i personally want to be able to crank out projects fast .....those high poly programs while they look great take forever to render and much more detailed to finish, so it greatly increases production time..., if I have to wait for a higher render, I'd rather go all the way with Maya , Max , Lightwave or CD4. And even then, thats time I can't use my computer, so whatever reason i'd have for going that high render, part of it would be because it can afford to buy me another computer lol ..... the beauty of iclone is that you can crank out quality productions blazing fast, so daz would be great for getting assets but for rendering, it sort of defeats the purpose.
By rollynumber1 - 15 Years Ago
hopefully the next iclone 5 will be much improve,so these will probably not be an issue any more

DAZ Studio is free (last time I looked), so why not use both?
By Dreamcube017 - 15 Years Ago
I just spent a good deal of time with Studio and Carrar.

Oh and I have Lightwave too.

here's the thing, each one has great points... but the problem is that EACH ONE has great points.

Daz Studio is wonderful with its animation preview and puppeterring... but it lacks a lot in the way of setting up a good 3D scene with out lots of plugins.

Carrara is wonderful, easy to use, and has some great results... but it's BUGGY and the preview windows are SLOW. So if you're an animator and have to get timing right... you either have to wait for tiny renders to finish or import the animations from Daz Studio to Carrara... While that is doable, it leaves room for a lot of... stuff to happen. bad stuff.

Lightwave, C4D, and Max are great... but they're more expensive. Oh and if you're not a Character designer and want to still use the fully rigged DAZ characters, you'll have to find ways to import them. I hear Carrara's FBX exporter works correctly now... but Lightwave 9's doesn't. LW 10's is ok. I think 3DS Max is all good though.

You don't really NEED epic renders unless you're trying to really impress or unless you're a lighting and material freak like me.

I think that if more 3D apps (the high end ones) had a directX preview or a GOOD fast openGL preview, things would work better. Why can a game run 60 FPS in realtime when a 3D preview window cannot? Yes it's a higherpoly character, but you can reduce it and it'll still not run as smooth. What gives?

I use as many tool at my disposal as possible.  The bottom line is the finished film / story, no amount of 3D mastery will ever cover a bad story!

If you want to make films and tell stories that use everything, if you want to take pictures of beautiful scantly clad ladies then use Daz 3D and forget animation.  Trust me the render times are just unforgivable.

Cape!

The Pro version, which I think you need to do any decent animation, is not.  And it is slow, and has a confusing library system...

By planetstardragon - 15 Years Ago
after looking around , it seems that for the price of free, houdini and blender are superior to daz, but their learning curves are that much more complex, ....which btw, the free houdini apparently allows importing and exporting obj, along with modeling and painting.

imo Daz's strength is their extensive library of easy to find assets, otherwise, blender and Houdini are much higher quality tools. I have daz but i onlly use it as a bvh converter heh.
By rollynumber1 - 15 Years Ago
the robotic or slow motion in character animation is due to the wireframe,Daz uses lot of mesh compare to iclone according to my research. iclone do live rendering so will be quite troublesome accommodating those wireframe in there system.
i'll use a mixteur of everything, daz, houdini blender and so one.
for now credit to iclone more improvment will come along the way
By Dreamcube017 - 15 Years Ago
Yeah, DAZ's strong point to me is thir assets.

Carrara 8 is OKAY and Studio is kinda good, but still meh.

I love Houdini's UI and Belnder is getting nicer.

The thing for me though is that I'm not the best at character design and DAZ has a wide variety of characters. But the thing is that it is hard to import them anywhere with all their bones and morphs.

make Human is moving pretty quickly though.

Check that out. It's pretty awesome.
By animagic - 15 Years Ago
I didn't know Houdini could be had for free or in HD for a bit.  Another modeling option then.  What to do... How responsive is the UI?
By planetstardragon - 15 Years Ago
ya know, after playing around with several animation softwares, i've come to the conclusion that iclone really does have a unique look, i do hope they don't change that look when trying to add more options to it. I'm noticing it especially because of going through all these different renders and tutorials, many of the bigger softwares aim for realism, and realism has a limit....real lol.... , there is something about the way iclone glows and smudges colors and the environments that the other software don't have. I say this because when we say that Iclone should be made better, but maybe the correct term is different, because iclone looks great now in quality.... , sure , i'd love more features to look like lightwave or maya , but i hope they don't lose that iclone feel in the process, it really is quite unique. If anything one thing I'd like to see is maybe a bit of an increase in polygons in their characters so we can add more detail, it's hard to take characters to higher levels of quality without it. you can do a lot with the bump maps but even then the uv mapping can put a limit on that too. would be a nice option especially now that it's going 64 bit .
By Darren01 - 15 Years Ago
Overall I'm quite happy with the character detail Iclone has. Got to remember if you are aiming for photorealistic characters, then you also need photorealistic backgrounds, sets etc or it all looks mismatched.

The main thing I'd like to see improved on IC avatars is the detail in the facial expression. At the moment it lacks a lot, very similar to the characters from the game 'The Sims'. The mouth could do with a lot more control points, in particular when it comes to smiles - quite frankly it's very difficult to achieve a smile that looks right. Secondly the eyebrow/upper eye area movement just doesn't look right.

Making 3D Movies is just a hobby for me but at this point I’ve played with iClone and DAZ3D equally as much. Here’s my thoughts:

DAZ 3D There’s no question that with some finesse one can produce their own photo realistic, super-hot fantasy girl. After that, with a little patience you can generate some seriously impressive pictures. Even the animation can be made to look quite nice. The problem is that it takes for freaking ever to set things up and you can watch glaciers move in the time it takes to render output.

iClone With a little getting used to you can setup new characters and sets in a couple of hours. Granted the characters may not look quite as real as the one’s in DAZ but with a little tweaking they’re not too shabby. I haven’t found where anyone has done it yet but with eXchange 4 you’re supposed to be able to import photo-realistic characters from DAZ.

Granted DAZ3D the application is free. However, there’s no avoiding dropping some coin if you want to make anything in it. You’re still going to have to buy characters and sets and prop’s etc. So when you really start to get into it, it’s not really any more economical than iClone.

Having played with them both equally as much the past few months, I’m going with iClone over DAZ3D.

By Dreamcube017 - 15 Years Ago
I also have to agree.

DAZ models are great (not just the pretty girls mind you), but the software is kind of a drag. DAZ Studio is limited unless you buy a ton of plugins, and Carraraa is still kinda glitchy.

You can make some decent models in iClone and can import mostly anything if it's not too high of a polycount. iClone also has some nice material options too.

Mixing iClone and programs like Zbrush or 3D Coat, you can get some really amazing results.
By Darren01 - 15 Years Ago
from what I can gather (I can't even figure out how to load the default models in Daz3D, it seems to have an awkward interface), Daz3D is more of a figure posing program (like Poser), whereas iClone is a movie production program. So naturally iClone's models aren't going to be as detailed as a program more aimed at static posing.
By Teviniii - 15 Years Ago
Poser and Daz go beyond posing. Although DAZ suffers from a nonsensical structure of its assets and a wonky interface, it is suitable for filmmaking too.

...and you might be surprised at how heavy a polycount iClone can manage on some machines. I still find that the major caveat is texture weight. The same goes for 3D exchange. Objects that crash with their original textures intact, load up just fine without them.

That's sums it about up for DAZ. I'm not sure about the filmmaking part. I remember it being touted as Poser replacement after some row between DAZ (or Zygote) and whoever developed Poser at the time.  What a disappointment that has been.

The first thing to consider is whether you want to pay for temporary software or not. RL seems to be implementing a new license scheme that essentially makes your license temporary (limited to 5 install/uninstalls)...among other things. Software usually has a perpetual license. The problem with install limits is many fold: computer death, hardware upgrades, infection issues, etc can all cause you to have to re-install software. People who used Antic's software learned the hard way that temporary software is not worth the money.

Granted, iClone is not under the new licensing scheme of CrazyTalk Animator..., yet. But, this seems to be the way RL is going. And having to buy another license (I don't care how much it is discounted) to install to a laptop is not attractive. Neither is the necessity of being online to install the software (this is a major security issue).

See the discussions:
https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic75417-161-1.aspx
https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic69118-251-1.aspx
https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic74594-253-1.aspx

If none of the above bothers you and you don't mind:

Operating creatively in a closed system where the full functionality of character animation is limited to RL content only (lip sync).

Being limited to RL's low resolution characters in order to take advantage of things like lip sync.

Being limited to low resolution assets in order to take advantage of iClone's render speeds.

Basically, being limited, then iClone might be a good option.

Before the licensing policy changes, RL's products were attractive b/c of ease and speed. If, in the future, iClone is licensed like CTA I will not be upgrading. Until I know for sure what iClone's licensing policy will be, I will not be investing in any new assets.

As mentioned before in this topic there are many alternatives. Most likely they will cost you. But, at least you'll be purchasing licenses that are perpetual and worth the virtual paper they are printed on. And what you pay for in plugins you'll make up for in inexpensive Poser/DS content (not to mention options, variety and choice of content and content vendors).

In fact, the options are getting richer:

With puppeteer, lipsync and Animate (plugin), DS can do decent animation.

With plugins Daz Studio can lower the resolution of Poser/Daz character/content for faster renders.

With plugins these characters can be exported to most programs that accept collada or fbx, in many cases keeping the textures and rigging in tact.

I believe someone is working on a GPU based renderer for DazStudio...this means near real time rendering (even with high resolution characters).

If you have a GPU, blender, Houdini, Cinema 4D, Lightwave, Xsi or Maya you can probably already take advantage of using your DS/Poser content with an internal or third party GPU Real time renderer

I like DazStudio because it makes it easy for me to port characters and content to other programs. If ever I become proficient animating in a professional application or a game engine, I can bring my legacy DS content with me to that app (high resolution and decimated versions).

As games become more HD and more people invest in GPUs, the low resolution look will quickly become dated.

As systems become more open source and options expand, most want to patronize companies that make it easier for them to learn and grow. I will drop companies that try to box me in, make life more difficult (or expensive without value added) and limit my options.

Just a thought.

@Gdai

As quiet as it is kept, for clips that don't require shadows and intricate lighting, Daz's current open GL actually renders faster than a comparable scene in iClone. However, if I had to choose one of the two, I'd select iClone any day - many of its capabilities often go untapped.
By animagic - 15 Years Ago
As I said, DAZ3D has been disappointing to me over the years. I want to be able to open a product and have it work and not have to chase my assets, for example. To me, DAZ is not intuitive at all.

Of course, I have had to invest to get used to iClone, but, thus far, it has not disappointed me. But it is all personal preference of course and if DAZ works for you, or Blender, or whatever, more power to you.

By silversnakes - 15 Years Ago
If you have a high end Computer and you possess very good knowledge of 3D then go for Daz 3d else Iclone is far more better option to use!!
By rollynumber1 - 15 Years Ago
Now with Daz 3D version 4 it's a new story ,as the workplace become a bit like iclone with fast rendering and lot of presets.
You have even preset for the camera movement and the lighting. I clone 5 will have to respond very fast . More i wonder if 3D exchange will work with version 4 as it's completely different from previous daz products unless there is an update from RL.
I bet that a strong response will come from Reallusion during the Summer cos at the end of the Day the customer is the KING....

I haven't dropped in on this forum too often as although my introduction to 3D was infact iClone3, I pretty much exclusively use Carrara for my animations.

but that has a lot more to do with my crappy graphics that don't handle iClone well than any features of the program.

I have been dabbling a bit with iClone4std lately, trying to use some of my huge library of Daz3d props in it, or more often, rendered backgrounds but it is only an extra tool to me though, handy due to it's excellent facial animation and multi dialogue capabilities but for everything else I use Carrara.

iClone crashes my graphics card if I dare use extra lights, plant, tree props etc but my Carrara8pro made video backgrounds go a long way to making it usable!

I also have Poser7, DazStudio3 advanced, Hexagon, project Messiah studio and Blender.

extra tools are handy and I won't knock any software.

the thing with Daz studio is lots of people make cool freebie content and put it on sharecg so you CAN do EVERTHING for free, that said I am in Daz3d's Platinum club and for a monthly fee can buy lots of very cheap content,

most the props exported as obj import using my old v2,0 version of 3DXchange into iClone TOO!

my YouTube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/wendyvainity?feature=mhee if you are curious about my animations.

By Dreamcube017 - 15 Years Ago
Wow just checked out your channel... I think the dancing gazzibo is my favorite one.

Well use what you want. I prefer using iClone for things that would look just about the same such as VFX and things... well I mean like 3D title sequences. I use other tools for doing more complex renders like Lightwave, Messiah, (even though that's mainly for animation) and now 3DS Max... used to use C4D but then I realized the lighting wasn't THAT great so I switched, although I do like it for modeling... even though it drops all its materials on export.

But anyway I totally understand where you're coming from.
By markk1 - 15 Years Ago
I can see peoples point about various software. I use Daz3 Studio, Poser 5, IClone 4 Pro and 3dXChange and Carrara 6 Pro.

My most dissapointing use so far is Daz3d. The Obj support is not the best, so I have to use Poser 5 to export obj for use in Iclone. A little hard to get around is Carrara's texture system.
When I import an obj, the textures appear to be shaders.

Must try and see if iclone doesn't like too many plant's. How many plants does it take to fall over?
By Dreamcube017 - 15 Years Ago
I've found that exporting stuff from Carrara is so silly. It totally ignores some texures so thigns don't import to other programs correctly. I've exported objects from DAZ Studio 3 and imported them into Lightwave 9 (and other programs) and they imported perfectly. If you can get that game engine thing for DAZ Sttudio, then you can export a polyreduced FBX with facial animations that way.

Oh, okay.

That does not happen with all Ratracer sets. When it does, try exporting it object by object or in sections, that should solve the issue.

Hello,

I will be putting together a film with live actors green screened and probably all in a virtual set. iClone looks like it's tailor-made for the job, but there have been some concerns about polygon count, and maybe the renderer vs other programs like Daz or Poser.

Character animation is not an issue here - just the 3D virtual backgrounds.

So I'm looking for a comparison of iClone with Daz Studio as a virtual movie set system, and if anyone can shed some light, also looking at Maya and 3DS.

It's been hard to find any info out there on the web that's specific to bringing video clips into a 3D program they way iClone can do it.

So my initial questions would be:

1. Can this video clip compositing be done in Daz Studio somehow? (or Maya, 3DS, etc.) I can prepare an alpha mask if necessary. I don't want to just do an overlay, but treat the clips like objects within the 3D virtual scene.

2. Scenes. How easy is it to convert/share virtual scenes between Daz/Poser format and iClone? I might need to import/export both ways.

3. Slightly cartooned and whimsical is the goal, so I don't need raytraced realism. But it still should look as real as possible otherwise. How is iClone for this vs. Daz, and then can I manipulate my video-clips of actors within Daz?

Thanks!

MachStudio Free! You have just made my day. Worked on a project that involved this product and loved it.

It will not replace iClone for me nor will it replace Studio Max, CityEngine, Blender and Vue Infinite as I find these tools compliment each other in different ways. There is not a work day that goes by for me that I do open iClone and Max several times. It's almost that way for Vue too as you have to start your network rendering on Vue very early in the workday to use it.

But... MachStudio Free!!!!!!!!!! DAMN!!!!! errrr... I mean DANG! :w00t:

How do you work Iclone into your workflow?
By warlord720 - 15 Years Ago
If I can't get an object in directly via Studio Max with the plugin or 3DXchange then I'll chroma key in what I need in the post work phase usually with After Effects if its a complicated matte setup or I might do it in VisionLab Pro if it envolves a lot of masking.

Like a lot of users I prefer to have the assets in the engine when possible but I'd say I'm doing at least three times more direct engine work with imported assets into iClone than I am with chroma key and it used to be the other way around.

With studio max and the plug-in there is very little I run into that I can't get into iclone. Even if the poly count is outrageous I'll build and tweak the scene in wireframe or smooth render then I'll strip out what I need in sections, then render and composite them together at post but I only do this if the project has a tendency to crash too often.

With an i7 core I've been working with some large poly counts... well over a million on just one prop like a city. If there is ever a 64 bit version where we can really use our RAM then the sky is the limit.

By Dreamcube017 - 15 Years Ago
MachStudio Pro being free is really amazing... however I don't have the hardware to run it. (My GFX card is not DX11 compatible, only DX10).

Also someone was asking about iClone compared to DAZ Studio. If you don't need raytraced lighting, then I guess you don't need a non-realtime renderer. However as it stands now, MachStudio is still superior to iClone as far as the rendering is concerned, but I don't know what iClone 5 is doing.

Also with MachStudio Pro 2, you don't need a highend software, just something that can export FBX... like blender. Taht being said, I don't see why MachStudio Pro 2 can't import obj files. It'd make sense, but oh well.
By bluemidget666 - 15 Years Ago
I dont think Machstudio supports FBX thats why you need MAX or MAYA or Sketchup Pro for the exporters..

But I might be wrong ....

~One thing that interests me with MachStudio is if it could be used as a Render studio for Iclone films .. There is a Post on the Machstudio forum that suggests exporters and importers could be made for a price .....

http://www.studiogpu.com/forums/viewthread/357/

Info about MachStudio came from http://myclone.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/machstudio-pro-goes-free/
By warlord720 - 15 Years Ago
Like iClone it has to be in its proprietary format. I can find no direct import of anything other than another MachStudio scene file or their three proprietary asset formats that are created with a supplied plug-in for several 3D applications.

If your hardware will run it then it is worth downloading and going through the lighting tute just to see how killer this application is. With spec maps and normals you can really bring out a great render. Not quite Pixar but not that far off with all things considered. One desktop vesus a renderfarm? I'll take that any day.

Still having a hard time believing I just compared its render to a pixar film in any fashion and it renders in a matter of seconds per frame with high level lighting!

The screenshots below are from a tute. Basic lighting, low contrast AO, high contrast AO, advanced lighting and advanced lighting with Ambient Occlusion. All done in realtime!

An importer for iClone would be heaven!

machstudio will import objects with fbx, but not animation.

I also heard that the sketchup exporter for machstudio even works
for the free version.

I am trying to get the blender script for machstudio installed
into blender 2.49b. It has taken some tweaking to get
blender 2.49b set up with the right version of python 2.6.2.
Now I just need to figure out getting the script installed
right.

The blender plugin is there in the machstudio folders once you
install it.

So theoretically you could get your stuff into machstudio through
blender 2.49. Not Iclone scenes though I'm sure.

GAH!! You're making me want to just go out and buy a new graphics card rightnow. :\ That's the ONLY thing standing in my way really... Hmm

an iClone importer would be BRILLIANT!... beyond brilliant. That way iClone can focus on the animation and physics and things, and not have to worry too much about the rendering.

Yeah the screenshots I posted were made with a generic GTX 460.

Anything that can go into max should be able to go out in the proper format unless the plug-in has a problem and that hasn't happened yet to me.

Oh man... the ease of use with iClone combined with the power of Mach Studio for the render! Be still my heart!

I'd buy the plug in from Reallusion if it was affordable. This would take it all to the next level very quickly. Looks like a great opportunity to open up iClone to more widespread use in different industries.

bluemidget666,

for installing the sketchup plugin , I recommend asking Rayman on this thread:

http://www.united3dartists.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2693&start=10

on the united3dartists forum. I haven't tried it yet.

For fbx import, try this: On Menu Bar : Create -> Load Objects -> point to your fbx file

So how do you get animated objects in? Do you still have to use DirectX or a certain importer?

Man it's kinda funny. I remember when DX11 was first released and I was asking who was going to get the new line of GFX cards that supportred it. Everyone was all skeptical about it... now everyone's got one but me! WTF!? 0.o

You have to have one of those exporter plugins to get animated objects in.
The only possibility, AFAIK, is a blender exporter. That's why I'm trying to get
this script installed in blender 2.49b.

the fbx exporter is only for static objects (its mentioned in their website). I dont know why because fbx format does support animation and camera export. As far as light matching it should not be an issue at all, The beauty is that iclone and MGP are both realtime. I think the camera matching is going to be the issue for those who do not have something like matchmover or syntheyes. If you do have access to those software the pipeline is simple.

1) animate your characters and camera in iclone. (use dummy objects for reference location. For example place a cube where a table would be etc, also create a chrome dome for lighting reference.)
2) render image sequences , one with dummy props for camera tracking software, one for character beauty pass.
3) render shadow pass
4) In maya or max, bring camera tracking info and markers(highly recommended for matching object position) if you made any.
5) after all models are in place in your favorite 3d app export to MGP.
6) do the lighting and texture tweaking there.
7) composite iclone character beauty pass with MGP background and them add the shadow pass.

Hm I'm going to have to reread that a couple of times to understand exactly what to do, but thanks for the hlep.

Dang... don't have syntheyes or matchmover... so I guess I'm soaked.

Simple ? thats how i felt after reading it :D

While I understand StuckOn's pipeline, I still think it'd be a little complex when characters are interacting directly with props.

I thought Machstudio Pro 2 was offering a FREE NO STRINGS ATTACHED DOWNLOAD (trial valid for 30 days). Am I wrong somewhere?
By bluemidget666 - 15 Years Ago
Hi yeah for some reason there is still a link to the 30 day trial this is the link you want

Does anybody know why they require Vista Business if you use Vista?
By bluemidget666 - 15 Years Ago
I can not think of any reason why it should need Vista Business over Vista Home ... None of the features offered in Business indicate better use for 3D rendering or driver support ...

Although DAZ suffers from a nonsensical structure of its assets and a wonky interface, it is suitable for filmmaking too.

That's sums it about up for DAZ. I'm not sure about the filmmaking part. I remember it being touted as Poser replacement after some row between DAZ (or Zygote) and whoever developed Poser at the time. What a disappointment that has been.

Really? First of all, their business was built on selling content, so it really did make sense for them to want their own stable platform. Remember how many owners Poser has had since it was launched (I hope Smith-Micro see a good return on their next version!). In that time DAZ have largely caught up to Poser in terms of what you can do in the program. In many ways they have even surpassed Poser, with things like Puppeteer, the Genesis figure, the decimator and texture atlas plug-ins. What has been disappointing is that neither program has truly differentiated itself from the other. Both new versions look nice, but both still have the same slow render times, and lack proper soft/rigid dynamics.
