I would like to know what the average sales figures for content in the store. I know it all "depends", but there must be some kind of figure that one could use to determine if it is worth putting time in creating products for Iclone.
And, what is the deal like with the reallusion store. Do you take a percentage? How much. How and when do you distribute sales funds.
Is there one place to find all this info?

jpiazzo (7/30/2008) I would like to know what the average sales figures for content in the store. I know it all "depends", but there must be some kind of figure that one could use to determine if it is worth putting time in creating products for Iclone.

That is an excellent question, I guess Coolclones could answer that one, since it looks like they have the most stuff up on the content store and on their on website. As far as how much Reallusion takes, I think it is 50% which I think it is reasonable for people that are making new skin and clothing for their characters, because they are providing you with the models, the plugins, the tutorials on how to use them, and the store to sell them for you. However I dont think that percemtage is very fair for things that you build , texture, and light from scratch. I would not mind giving reallusion 30 % of the profits because they are taking care of the website and sales, but 50% on 100% original content is a bit much for my taste. I think if reallusion would have understood that, they would have more content developers.
For more info on development using the ccd program you can go here:

Yeah, but if you join up with the Sopranos, you get locked in for life and if you don't produce he'll take a finger for every week you don't provide a source of revenue. Go ahead, join up with tony, stubby! :D

I think, 60% for the developer and 40% for reallusion would be a fair deal, but 50/50 is a bad deal. :w00t:

But, there are no restrictions on me making and selling original items on my own. On my own site, with my own merchant account or with paypal. In that case there is no revenue share with Reallusion, right?
This is what Coolclones does...or is coolclones part of reallusion?
Not that I think that Reallusion does not deserve something for thier effort. But, 50% is a preety high percentage for what amounts to the use of an e-commerce system and the natural marketing advantages of being on this site.
As a web developer who has experience doing e-commerce and digital downloads, frankly if a see a good market develop for IC content I might be inclined to start my own site. In that case I would welcome vendors at 80/20 or 90/10...no problem.

jp you can start your own store and own 100% of the revenues -
rl charges 50% presumably for the marketing and exposure it gives by having the content in thier site
coolclones is a user created/user supported site - so it is separate from reallusion

I'm interested in developing content. In fact, I would like to do a site that creates "multi-platform" content. I can think of at least 3 or 4 other 3D Machinima / movie making communities where there is a market for low-poly sets, props, animations, and characters. Yes the details are different, but they share ALOT in basic specs. Most begin with 3ds max assets, exported via plug-ins. They all need optimized low poly assets - video game spec assets really. Same mesh, slightly different rigs and texture details... but anyway
The question remains however, how MUCH can we make.
I don't think this is such a ethereal question. Reallusion should be able to answer this (I would hate to be a business partner or an investor in a company that could NOT make revenue predictions. In fact, I suspect that selling add-ons and content is a MAJOR part of Reallusions business plan. They also must figure into the equation the 50% gather from an active developer community...That number is? So what is that figure? How many registered users of Iclone are there? If they don't want to make this info real "public" come up with a N.D.A. for developers.

well i can say is do the evnrinmental homework - machinima video creators are a very small market when considered in context of hte overall 3d industry - so look at how many new members or forum contributors are here and you kinda gauge the potential size of your market - very small - so i woiud not bank on making it my sole bread earner - if you really want to dig in, why not look at rl 10k statements if available
the best way to gauge what you might make is look at the offerings here and at coolclones and if you can develop content that is better at competitive prices, suggest start by submitting it to RL and see the response - of course you can start your own website but you would need to spend more time marketing that web site to make people that use this type of content aware of your site
as for RL providing this level of detial - why would they? all they have is a forum member asking - show them what you can do and raise thier interest first

I pretty much agree with what you have said. I do think that some kind of revenue prediction should be at least some part of the developer system. I think that Reallusion should have to pitch me as much as I should have to pitch them. I would be investing my own time ($) in an endeavor that if ultimately successful would benefit them as much as me. I would expect to have to pitch reallusion on my skills if I were applying for a JOB as a developer.
Anyway, I'm not knocking Reallusion here. I think that they have one of the most organized and accessible developer systems I have ever seen. The developer center of the site is great. And certification and submission methods a clear and necessary. The fact that Reallusion tests submission is a step ahead of other kinds of 3D content sites. Finally, the 3ds max plug-in works very good and the tutorial videos and documents are very good. I would like to see more and newer and project files (such as max projects for non-standard characters, animated props, and live plants), but I anticipate updates on 3.0s release.
Anyways, thanks for the advise, and I have already started on a couple of test products that I hope to finish soon.
