Thanks Eric for announcing another fantastic RL contest. The 3D character contests are always special events with great opportunities. Awesome prizes for this one - so it's time to set up some characters :). Many Thanks to RL for still holding these events and Thumbs up to Eric and the Team for your hard work organizing the contest. Great Work! Looking forward to see all the amazing entries. Time to get creative!

So I've tried to post my topic twice, and have gotten no responses. and they don't seem to be updating... Am I doing it wrong, or posting the wrong things in the wrong place?

Hi @CCoward,
We normally put new member's post at pending for security reasons. So I've activated one of your post and replied to you.
Thanks for asking and we look forward to your submission!

I had a few questions about using existing concept art for the Character Design (Realistic) Contest:

1) Can we use an existing hand-drawn artwork as the main idea and primary reference, but use AI generated artworks to drive the render style and other details?
Would it lose out on any points on originality or is it sufficient that I didn't stick to the main concept art but further enhanced it using AI? Of course I'll be crediting the artist, the AI prompt and the AI tool that I used.
I'm not a concept artist and I fear I would do a subpar job if I tried to conceptualize a character from scratch.

2) Are we free to use any external renderer for the final submission? Like Vray/Maya or Unreal Engine? Or do we need to light and render it in Character Creator/iClone?

Hi @ThatNewID

Thanks for reaching out! I think you asked a very good question, and here's our reply:

1) Can we use an existing hand-drawn artwork as the main idea and primary reference, but use AI generated artworks to drive the render style and other details?
Would it lose out on any points on originality or is it sufficient that I didn't stick to the main concept art but further enhanced it using AI? Of course I'll be crediting the artist, the AI prompt and the AI tool that I used.
I'm not a concept artist and I fear I would do a subpar job if I tried to conceptualize a character from scratch.
>> Yes, I think crediting the original artist is necessary and you can enhance it with AI, and please show it in your WIP post as a process.

2) Are we free to use any external renderer for the final submission? Like Vray/Maya or Unreal Engine? Or do we need to light and render it in Character Creator/iClone?
>> You can use your best render, no need to limit it in iClone or Character Creator.

Thank you so much for your reply Eric. It has cleared a lot of the confusion I had regarding the contest entry. Will be posting my chosen concept and the AI moodboard as a WIP on the forum. Cheers! :)

Hi, I have a question about the main rule of the contest. Do I have to work on the CC3+ Base from a start or can I start from zbrush using Dynamesh (where I feel more comfortable) and then use headshot2 to transfer my character to the required base? Thanks!

Hi @hass.almonacid,
Yes, absolutely! Please document this process into your WIP post, and our judges would love to find out how you do it with your detailed progress.
Looking forward to your submission! :D

Hello!
A question...
Can there be more than 1 character in the render?  For either Character Design or Character Animation.
I have an idea that involves a mirror where the reflection is different than the main scene.  This would require 2 characters.  Is this allowed?
I guess I should clarify first...  Do we need a scene?  Or just a blank background for both Design and Animation?

Thanks,
--DRLarkin

Hi there, I may not have a definitive answer here, but my understanding is that for Character Design, you'd want to focus more on the character's design than anything else (the scene would be secondary or tertiary). So if you want to include a reflected image as part of your presentation (even if its a different / variant character), that could work as a separate imagine among your renders, it should just be clear what your main character is. I'm not an animator, but if a reflected element is part of your animation presentation, that could also work well.

I am not competing this time, but in my previous entries, I made sure the focus was the character's design. Sometimes just a turntable or platform with the character is sufficient. Eric can correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't always follow the directions as closely as I should have when I competed... :hehe:

Hi Eric,
Hope you're doing well!
I recently received an email about the 2024 Reallusion 3D Character Contest.
It mentioned a free three-month license to participate, but there's a deadline in July to submit a work-in-progress (WIP).
I was hoping you could help me with a couple of things:
Deadline: Could you remind me of the specific date in July to submit the WIP?
Upload Process: Is there an official website or platform to upload the WIP?
Additionally, are there any recommended hashtags I should use when sharing my WIP (optional)?
Thanks in advance for your assistance!
Best,

Hey everyone,

I just realized I might have posted my WIP update in the wrong section. Is there a specific place where we’re supposed to update our WIP? Also, how can I delete or correct my previous post? I’m feeling a bit embarrassed and want to make sure my update is in the right spot.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Eric,

Would you be able to clarify a few things about the prizes? In this post it shows that the top cash prize for both character and animation categories is $1000, but the contest website says the animation category has a top prize of $2000; which is correct?

Also, do all the top 3 places of the realistic and stylized character and animation categories earn all the sponsor prizes? For example are there 12 laptops and 12 motion capture devices up for grabs? If not, how are the sponsored prizes awarded ?

Thank you for this awesome opportunity!

There are 5 categories currently in the contest. They are: Best Design/ Realistic, Best Design/Stylized, Best Animation/ Realistic, Best Animation/ Stylized, and Best Accurig Character. You may only submit 1 character to each category; meaning, you can submit a total of 5 entries.

Hi @DRLarkin,

>> Yes, of course! But please write us a clear description and topic so the judges can understand your concept for scoring.

I guess I should clarify first...  Do we need a scene?  Or just a blank background for both Design and Animation?
>>The judges will still focus more on the characters itself. The scene is nice to have but not a must. The scene/environment was added to compliment the character's persona and story.

Hi @bradyrigg,
Thank you for spotting this. We corrected the cash prize money info and made it identical to our contest rules page.
As for the sponsored prizes, each sponsor provided us with limited quantities of their hardware and serial number, and it will be allocated by Reallusion.

 Hi Eric,
When creating the blog on ArtStation, are we supposed to have one post that has the entire WIP, or is it supposed to be a bunch a little posts with the same title. I really want to make sure I don't lose any points on my WIP because I have been putting in a lot of effort to capture the whole thing on my post here. Would I be penalized for copy-pasting my posts on this forum into one big blog post on ArtStation?

Thank you for your time and for clarifying,

Hi Brady,
Thank you for asking. Your final WIP post submission should be from ArtStation or BlenderArtist or ZBrush Central.
And that WIP post should contain sufficient detail explaining how you create the character with moderate coverage.
You can take the visuals from your RL forum post. But please remember the judges have a lot of work to review, so try to keep the coverage short but precise.

Our seasoned artist Peter Alexander did a great demonstration with his WIP posts, and I encourage you to learn and reference his format.

So the progress thread here does not count and we're forced to make an account on one of the above?

Hi @Casanuda,
Yes you will need to setup an account. But the good news is that these platforms are all Free to register, and they are the biggest artists' community.
I've seen your work and really encourage you to share these WIPs on our designated forum. Let more people see you work and learn from you ;)

Hi I have some questions about the contest.
1. Are entries only limited to one person or does the contest allow group entries? For example, if I wanted to work with another person as a team on one contest entry for the Accurig or other submissions, is that allowed or no? And if so, do we specify that two people worked on it together?

2. If a person wins are they required to make content for Reallusion, and participate in the interviews or is it optional?

3. Are people required to have an Artstation, BlenderArtist, or Zbrush Central account to post WIPS, or is posting WIPS to the forum with a Reallusion account acceptable?

4. Can the work including videos, WIPs, images, final submissions include watermarks?

5. By 3 view character displays for the WIP, does that mean three different angles of the character like front view, back view, side view with different expressions for each? Or does that mean three different poses with three different expressions? Can the three different images or poses from the WIP be included in the final submission or just the WIP?

6. In the submission when it says to include "4 to 8 beauty-render images/videos of the character" and have at least 4 different poses and expressions, can the images and video clips be included all in one video together, or do the images and different videos have to be uploaded separately to the submission form?
7. In addition, can the different videos be combined into one or does there have to be four separate videos and how long do they have to be?

8. Since the contest requires a turntable video along with the 4 to 8 images or videos of the character, if a person wanted to post a video to YouTube, can the turntable video, with the 4 to
8 different images and videos all be included in that one YouTube video? Or does the turntable video have to be posted to YouTube and separate from the 4 to 8 rendered images or videos images/videos ? If the images/videos are not to be included in the turntable video, where do the 4 to 8 images/videos have to be posted?

9. What is to be included in "industry and occupation" on the form, and what if a person is unsure about the industry or occupation they fall under?

10. If a person is attending a college do they have to include that in the submission or is it optional?

Thank you so much.

Hi @blowberjrarts,

Hi I have some questions about the contest.
1. Are entries only limited to one person or does the contest allow group entries? For example, if I wanted to work with another person as a team on one contest entry for the Accurig or other submissions, is that allowed or no? And if so, do we specify that two people worked on it together?
>>Yes, you can apply as a team and work with others. Please properly credit your team and decide what name will be used to publishing if you win.
The name listed on the SUBMIT form will be the name that we use to publish to the media.

2. If a person wins are they required to make content for Reallusion, and participate in the interviews or is it optional?
>>Making content for Reallusion is not required. But the interview is highly suggested as we can feature and promote your work!

3. Are people required to have an Artstation, BlenderArtist, or Zbrush Central account to post WIPS, or is posting WIPS to the forum with a Reallusion account acceptable?
>>Yes. Reallusion forum WIP will not be counted. You must make a WIP post on the above forum, and you can FREE register it.

4. Can the work including videos, WIPs, images, final submissions include watermarks?
>>Yes, but I think we did provide FREE SOFTWARE upon request. All applicants that provided us legit personal info and ArtStation account info should get it.

5. By 3 view character displays for the WIP, does that mean three different angles of the character like front view, back view, side view with different expressions for each? Or does that mean three different poses with three different expressions? Can the three different images or poses from the WIP be included in the final submission or just the WIP?
>>Differnt poses. We want you to experience the power of our CC AccuRIG!
https://www.reallusion.com/character-creator/auto-rig.html

6. In the submission when it says to include "4 to 8 beauty-render images/videos of the character" and have at least 4 different poses and expressions, can the images and video clips be included all in one video together, or do the images and different videos have to be uploaded separately to the submission form?
>>Please submit with your best render.

7. In addition, can the different videos be combined into one or does there have to be four separate videos and how long do they have to be?
>>We did not limit your video format, and what we are looking for is the best display of your character.
It's a character contest! Welcome to use your creativity and submit :-)

>> The turntable video have to be posted to YouTube and separate from the 4 to 8 rendered images or videos images/videos .

9. What is to be included in "industry and occupation" on the form, and what if a person is unsure about the industry or occupation they fall under?
>>Please submit the industru that you feel is closest to, and it will not affect your contest score. Don't worry!

10. If a person is attending a college do they have to include that in the submission or is it optional?
>>Tick yes and you can have an extra chance to win student prizes. (Student ID will be asked to provide)
Thank you so much.

Hiya,

I've completed the rough cut for my entry into the animation category and it comes out at 38 seconds.

Is this an issue, or should I try trim 8 seconds?

Thanks
Cas

Hi @Casanuda
We are asking for 20-30 seconds only. Your current submission passed 30 seconds and please trim it.
Just show us they key part will suffice. Please resubmit and notify us. Thanks.

Hi @Casanuda,
(Aug/29 update) - Considering that this 30 second law may be too harsh for all contestants and restrict creativity, our team decided that we will review the best 30 seconds from the submission.
So no need to re-submit and thank you for asking. Feel free to submit more entry before the deadline! Thanks!

Hello Eric,

I'm writing to you because I don't know what happened during my submission. I clicked on the ‘character animation - realistic’ entry as shown in the screenshot, but in the official entries my work appears in ‘stylized’. Is there any way my entry can be changed, as I'm actually participating in the animation of a realistic character?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Hey Eric,

It's me again. I've just submitted the same project but this time it does appear in ‘realistic’. Could you remove my other submission from the ‘stylised’ category?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Kalex

Why did you treat me with racism? The racism of the judging panel is very blatant
I knew you would do this from the beginning but I thought well of you
I designed the most realistic character among all the participants
and within the Character Creator program only without the need for a third party program
which makes me the most deserving of first place for designing a realistic character
and despite that You made me out of the top three and in all four sections of the competition
To this extent you deal with racism towards Arabs
You made other people win and their character is less realistic than the character I created
Does this most realistic character in the realistic character design section not deserve to win one of the three places even though it is the most realistic and beautiful At once
And does this character in the realistic animation section also lose all three places
If I had won third place
It would have been unfair Reality on me Your side
You make me lose completely
Even the character I posted in the realistic animation section
Which deserved second place
Was removed from the classification
People from different countries of the world agreed that I will win because of the realism of my work
You disappointed me and made me feel let down
This competition and the judging panel
They are racist, extremely corrupt and completely immoral
Because any A person with an ounce of conscience, honor, and honesty with himself
He will admit that I am the most deserving of winning, especially in the realistic character design section
The racism of the judging committee is very blatant
You have lost my respect for you
In any case, my artistic works are too high to be in a competition like this and judged by people who are racist towards Arabs
And my suspicions about you were correct
And I knew And tell everyone that you will treat me with racism as if I could see the future
This is a judgment and dishonest behavior towards me on your part
You put my works in the four sections
And you made people who are not worthy of winning even though their works are of a lower level than My work
You made people win using third-party programs, even though the competition was primarily for the Character Creator program, which is the company's own program
And I created the most realistic and beautiful human character
But because of a dishonest and racist jury member towards Arabs, I lost in all sections and in all positions

Hum excuse me sir but because you didn't win makes the judges/reallusion team racist ?

I didn't win either, I'm sure I did a good job though. But it's a contest. Loosing doesn't mean it's unfair. It just means someone did a better job than me/you. You're clearly frustrated of the announcement, I can understand that. But playing the racism card ? Really ? Now because someone just didn't like your work, it means they are racist towards you and the Arab community ? Come on man, be serious...

Also, putting you above everyone else and claim that what you've done is better than everything else is far from respectful. While you are convinced "you" did "the most" realistic work, there are other contestants who did a hell of a job but don't brag about it.
You say you've only used Character Creator, but that doesn't necessarily make you more deserving: you show that you know how to use one tool, while other artists show that they know how to use several. Who's more deserving?

Finally, because I don't know if you're trolling or if you're serious, accusing people of racism because you lost is, by far, really disproportionate, and I'm pretty sure it breaks the forum rules. Maybe you should grow up and accept defeat. That's the only way to improve, especially as an artist. It's good to want to be the best. Thinking you're automatically the best only makes the fall even harder.

Take the time to process. I understand the disappointment. I myself can't hide my disappointment with the result. But it's just a contest, it's not going to stop me from doing my job as a character artist. Does that mean that what I did was above the rest, and that the competition is therefore unfair? No, it doesn't. Does that mean the judges purposely looked at which community I belonged to and automatically didn't let me win? It seems so absurd as I write it...

It's really time to stop constantly playing the victim and racism card. We all make mistakes, we can all improve. Accusing others of being unjust/racist/whatever prevents us, de facto, from improving.

Have a nice day sir.
