Hi, newbie here.
Is it possible to have a flat 2D look shader in CC4?
I have tried the toon shader. It works to a certain extent, but I'd like it to look like vector flat. Wondering if that is possible.
Thanks!

Something like this?

There are couple of options.
If you just need a black character on a light background, then remove all lights in the scene
including IBL and set background to some bright color in Project settings.

If you want a character to have some specific color, then some more work be needed in addition to the above.
First, set ambient light to white.
Then remove eyes, teeth, occlusion and tear-line objects for simplification.
Apply attached skin to the character.
Select all materials and set a specific diffuse color.
Set background color.

For the case when character has hair, cloth, shoes, select all materials for the character, convert to Traditional shader, slide Self-Illumination to 100 and set a specific diffuse color.
Then remove textures from hair, cloth, shoes. You may leave opacity maps intact if needed (like for the hair).

Hi 4u2ges. Thanks so much for your reply. This is great for silhouettes!
However, I should have been a bit more specific what I wanted as I think I did not explain properly.
I'm after a more cel shader look with flat colours.
Is this something that can be done?

No sadly you cannot get that level of flat vector style inside Iclone or CC4
obviously very easy with CTA though.
or export to blender and setup complex shader nodes to get the effect

Thank you for your reply! Might try in blender as you suggested.

Yes, toon shader is quite limited in CC/IC, but still with some effort it could serve fairly well.
Again, by converting to Traditional shader, simplifying texture, applying certain level of self illumination and playing with LUT effects.

Just search the youtube search bar for “anime style in blender”
Just be aware All of them require fairly labor intensive shader node editing to get a flat 2D look

I made an entire film with the iclone toon shader last summer ( ghost origins linked below)
It has its limitations but it certainly renders fast
I wish there was a magical 3D render engine that could convert my 3d renders to look like this guys hand drawn works without all the material editing
I have Blender, Autodesk Maya and Maxon C4D R26
and no one is close but I suspect AI may eventually get us there
