I can export to iClone8 as an FBX file, but I'm unable to use any animation in iClone8.
And whenever I try to export directly to iClone8 I get a "Failed to load the file" pop up.
Followed by this error message:

I have never seen that message.
You could try to save as iAvatar first in CC and then try to load that in iClone.

Do make sure that you have iClone 8 and CC4 updated to the latest versions. If you have a mismatch of versions you can encounter errors.
Also have you checked clicking the "Send To iClone" button on the top toolbar in CC4 to send the character over. This way you don't need to use export and import.
