If I am correctly understanding what you are asking, I would try this:
Remove or turn off all lights in a scene, and uncheck Activate IBL under the Visual tab. In short, remove or turn off anything that will emit any light; your scene should be pitch black (as far as models are concerned; if you don't have a sky, that part will still be the default color [usually gray]).
Under the Visual tab again, check Fog On. The distance is set by default at Start: 10,000, and End: 20,000. I would change this; you will have to play with it to get the effect you want, but I would begin with Start: 1 and End: 100,000, and tweak from there. You should begin to see the effect that you are looking for.
I hope this helps.
Best, Terry

Hi, i had the same question and found a really easy way to create depth maps with iClone, using the Iray preview renderer.
Here is a scene that i loaded in iClone.

In the Iray render options only Depth is selected

It quickly renders a nice depth map.

Hope that anyone finds this useful, too :)
