youtube seems to be focused on claiming the tiktok community - this is a video that explains the new algorithm in overview

though it pays less than a long form video,  this may be a great leader loss way of growing your channel quickly as youtube seems to be focused on growing this asap, you can actually grow viral with a good subscriber base overnight with the right short video -

i started this thread in an effort ( once again, never stop believing! )  to hopefully get the community to work together and help each other grow on youtube -  so if you make youtube shorts please share on this thread

-

and here's a tutorial explaining how to make youtube shorts

render / resolution / export size as per - https://vidiq.com/blog/post/youtube-shorts-vertical-video/

and if you are wondering what to film for a  youtube short,  he's an idea that will allow you to make endless poetry videos

it's a game I created with chatgpt -  you can put tts to your poems and animate your character to speak it in cta or iclone :w00t:

It is a bit sad the that youtube is chasing the tik tok demographic in promoting disposable
(under 60 seconds) content.
There is almost no good truly inspiring 3D animation on youtube anymore except the AAA game trailers with alot of story packed into about three minutes or so
the Warhammer40k content is excellent in that regard.
Even the unreal engine 5 stuff is larglely just boring repetitive tech demo’s of the features of lumen or nanite but no actual films and sorry but  38 seconds of a guy walking in some cool scifi armor at 60 FPS is NOT a “short film”.
Other than the quality AAA game trailers I mostly watch filmaking analysis channels and follow the latest AI developments

sadly,  i have to agree -  but where there's a negative,  there's always a positive.

in this case,  as you pointed out,  there's a void of animation.  Further,  people enjoy communities,  look at how the nft trend started,  with a bunch of ugly 8 bit ai generated art -  it wasn't the art that was the attraction,  it was being part of this community (Fomo) and getting the most unusual / unique generated ugly nft so you could be famous in a community that can't tell good art from peeling paint. further,  tik tok isn't exactly the college of knowledge either,  i swear i feel my iq points dripping out of my ear for every minute i spend watching those,  'interesting' -pauses for a gag-  videos that have a delightfully mind numbing affect.

we have an animation void in youtube,  and we have a community of 2D and 3D animators. - ergo we have an advantage to do something no one else is doing. .

yes,  the world sucks,  capitalists ruin everything,  and in about 500 million years,  aliens will discover this barren scorched earth with a dead sun and cold space, without a trace of a now extinct human species.

long story short,  be happy anyway  -  we die even if everything was perfect and wonderful, so lets have fun with it.   lol

my latest short -  https://youtube.com/shorts/xafnZV5VJ4Q?feature=share
from this video i learned that youtube is so painfully woke and paranoid,  that they will block your video from any views if the title sounds remotely negative. i'm going to try another test,  where i make a video called "happy flowers" -  that illustrates how after an apocalyptic doomsday meteor that makes all mankind extinct,  many flowers will make earth beautiful again.  so i don't offend anyone and offer hope  it's a fear and negativity driven world with a very short attention span,  just play along... :w00t:

(yesterday's politically correct title short got me over 500 views in 1 hour!! )    time to make some ugly mind numbing animations en masse as a community!

be happy (anyway) ! -twitch-

Ugh, this is depressing. Shorts can be fun, but I agree that you can't present anything profound in under 60 seconds. I tried I couple of shorts that were really just excerpts of my longer work, and they got a fair amount of views, but I think I only picked up 2 subscribers out of thousands of views. I actually did a lot better in terms of gaining subscribers by posting the same excerpts on some specific Facebook groups that had similar content (tho very little if any animation.) When you see some of the dumbest things go viral on the internet (I'm looking at you, unboxing videos), it does sometimes feel like "success"--in regards of views and subscribers--is as random as playing the lottery. Certainly effort is no guarantee of success in that regard--LOL. I think any of us working in this sphere have dreamed at some point of producing something that really takes off, but there are a lot of factors that go into it. Not surprisingly, jacking into something that is already popular helps a lot--there are a ton of videos on Youtube that are just somebody playing a video game, and they get hundreds of thousands and even millions of views, so I guess if all I wanted was more subscribers, I'd stop animating and just record myself playing video games. That said, I know that a lot of the moderate success of my Star Trek: Aurora videos was because it was based on a property with an existing fan base, so my hands aren't completely clean. I think in the fan film sphere you still need to do a good job to stand out--the better productions do seem to get more views--but half the battle seems to be just trying to get any kind of exposure, and starting from scratch with an unknown property can be tough. Of course--as I learned from Aurora--the danger of fan films is that you don't own the copyright to the IP, and the IP owner can pull the rug out from under you at any time, which is what Paramount did with Star Trek fan films. My new production Quest of the Key is not directly based on any particular IP, but more generally on the fantasy genre. It's very much in look and feel a combo of D&D and Lord of the Rings, but without specifically being one or the other. I can imagine that if I called it "A D&D Fan Film" I'd probably pull in more views, but I'm not going there again. So, I guess ultimately, maybe success is going to have to be one's own satisfaction with one's work. I'm starting to think of my animation as my "model railroad": for ages people have spent a lot of time and money on their model railroads in their basements that almost nobody beyond friends and family and a few other model railroad enthusiasts ever saw or see. Maybe that will have to be enough. Tho, just maybe...   ;-)

I have stopped chasing the number of views and put my films now on Vimeo, just to have a higher quality repository.

If I see that the umptieth shuffle dance short gets over a million views or more then why bother?

Come to think of it, my most successful YouTube video (which is for a Marketplace product) would probably make a perfect short. I have to look into that.

I think it depends on the time you spent creating the animated movie.
In order for a youtube channel to reach the top with only animated films, the animations must be of AAA quality.
It takes years to finish a quality project like the animated movies on television.
I don't think anyone would spend years on just one video to be successful on youtube without making any money. After all, this requires a large team.
Of course, there are those who prepare animated films for hobby purposes. However, their desire to publish their videos as soon as possible causes them to compromise on quality.

I prepared the following tutorial video in 1.5-2 days on average.
The video attracted a little attention because it was instructive.
More professional results could have been achieved by spending more time creating this short film.
But for this you really need to have no other job.

Youtube algorithms value your video based on views
If there is a rapid increase in the number of viewers of your video when you first post the video, youtube continues to recommend the video to more users.
Short videos spread much faster
This allows you to reach a fast number of views
Even a short video of a nokia phone was watched 26 thousand times on my other youtube channel, which I can't spare time for yet.

Of course, this information is just my own opinion based on my experience.

Well Tim if you figure  how crack the youtube algorithm please share.
As far as the vertical shorts I would say forget about 3D animation!
if it is not a video of an attractive real life young female in  tight yoga pants with the keywords , Dating, feminism, Redpill, LGBTQ in the title then it will never go “viral” in the YT shorts category.

My channel is small (a little over 500 subs)
I have never even hit 10,000 views on any video.
As you can see my most viewed video is a 35 second test clip of a random guy getting kicked in the crotch ,knocking him off a bridge and getting impaled on a spike nearly seven years ago
.
The next highest is a fairly recent video tutorial on how to rig a Daz genesis 8 figure in blender with the paid auto rig pro addon but still use Daz mimic audio lipsync via the free diffeo plugin.

I have reached a dead end on tutorials because the Daz community does not care about animation and the Blender community
does not care about using  Daz figures & content or Reallusion
Iclone/CC4 for that matter.

I have tried a few popular genres in series animation from the HALO video game franchise to the popular “Ghost in the Shell” franchise with very little response from those fan bases or anyone else TBH.

I have kinda lost interest 3D animation ATM
I have a second channel that I might start uploading
movie analysis and commentary on the advances in AI art,https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/70500da1-db26-425f-ae16-70e4.png

@Yepkoo you are absolutely correct and I would emphasize
that the CHARACTER ANIMATIONS must be AAA quality
not so much the render engines & VFX.

I subscribe to this guys channel.
He uses the valve “source filmmaker” engine
not single “realtime reflection” to be found
No “lumen” no “nanite” no raytracing
No EEVEE or cycles I doubt you even need a GPU
His latest video hit over 700K in one month.
I could watch his work all day just based on the Character animation and cinematic camera work alone.

sadly,  this is false -  it's all about marketing.  that's why this moment in youtube shorts, youtube is pretty much giving away free marketing just to take the tiktok audience. no other reason.  Also why it's a good time to claim that fame with youtube shorts as a community.  ( i actually tested this theory by purposefully uploading a meh animation i made in like 5 minutes,  which would have gotten 2 views or less if i uploaded as a regular video.  I wanted to test the claims about the views it was getting,   it's true  -  just avoid politically controversial topics / titles to not get shot down by algorithms - youtube is painfully rigged lol )

The harsh reality,  people don't know what they like,  they look for articles, top 10s, reviews, and opinions of whats popular,  whats popular is what publicists and marketers get paid to do,  no one has time to think for themselves.  Pet rocks. -  famous people had a marketing budget backing them. period.

Proof of my claim,  8bit nfts and this video got  4.3billion views -  you could do this blindfolded in iclone.   quality has nothing to do with it,  hype has everything to do with it. it took me a long time to come to grips with that reality of the entertainment industry over all.   ( quality only matters AFTER you have an audience,  in an effort to keep them from getting bored with you and moving on to something else )

By yepkoo - 3 Years Ago
The fiction in this video is very good and you don't get bored while watching the video.
If we make a similar example, there are games that have emerged as a result of years of work but whose sales are very low.
But a simple bird game went viral.
But exceptions always happen. Maybe some luck.
The important thing here is which one has more examples.
You won't find 5 videos that go viral this way.
Like I said, this is just my opinion.
Maybe I'm thinking wrong.
It is not my intention to demoralize anyone.
However, we must take into account some facts.

However, there are also channels that progress successfully, although they are not viral in this regard.
For example the IcloneFun channel  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhhKiUiWIpg

Indeed the above quoted is the harsh reality of 2023 and beyond
They key is getting that audience first and if you look at your video analytics that will tell you the sobering tale.

The average youtube viewer (not already subscribed to you) will commit about 15 seconds to your video before clicking away UNLESS something completely unexpected happens no later than the 15 second mark to keep them engaged.
(such as guy suddenly getting kicked in the crotch and falling to a painful impalement death on a hook.)
this explains why short videos even with  deceptive clickbait titles get clicked but not even completed past 50 percent on average.

Spending alot of time with complex 3D sets & asset  building and story development/exposition plus VFX and post production sound hoping to build an audience with 3D animated stories centered around a core character or group of characters on youtube is a complete waste of time in the current climate and I fear I no longer have the  drive to make those efforts.
which is why I will likely move onto film/movie/entertainment commentary and opinion
only using my 3D animation and design skills and AI art  as visual aids to  editorially enhance my presentations when needed.

By planetstardragon - 3 Years Ago
here's an analogy of how fame and marketing works - nature actually showed me this on a miami beach one morning lol

you go on a beach,   with a box with pictures of crackers on it (clickbait),   birds are already familiar with the box so they think its food,  but your box is filled with paint chips -  you start to flash the box around,  to grow a bigger audience of seagulls, even throw down a few real crackers ( trailers )  to encourage growth-  .....the whole beach is looking at you,  and tons of seagull just waiting for you to start throwing crackers -  alll hype .....you get photographed and become famous as the seagull guy - you throw down the paint chips,  the birds leave,  party is over -  but you are still that famous seagull guy - and next time you may not be as lucky if the seagull remember you as the one that tried to feed them paint chips

I did this with crackers though -  i had a wall of over 100 seagulls looking at me dead in the eyes -  was actually very intimidating because they looked ready to attack me for what was in the box -   you throw down crackers,  suddenly they are all eating ....and now other seagull nearby see the first group eating and join in,  the audience grows and if you don't feed them,  you risk getting attacked for more -   you have to actually show an empty box and walk away slowly -  and don't put a cracker on your head,  now every time you come back to the beach with a box, if the seagulls remember you,  they flock around you waiting for you to feed them again.   at least until the next guy tries to one up you by feeding them sardines.

the hype is what started the fame,  the real crackers is what kept it going every time you come back to that beach.    at this moment,  the hype is simply making youtube shorts because it's new and competing with tiktok.  that won't last.

Yeah, it's sometimes hard not to feel discouraged. Good luck on whatever you decide to do! I do enjoy animating still, so I'll keep at it for now. It occurred to me the other day, tho, that sometimes the only difference between a lunatic and an artist is an audience--LOL--so we'll see how things go. Maybe being a happy lunatic will be okay.  ;-)

LOL--that's an astute analogy! I'll try to give out crackers, but my box only holds a few, and I have to leave the beach and go get some more, and it's a long trip to the store...  ;-)

Yeah, it's sometimes hard not to feel discouraged.

Its not so much that I am “discouraged”
its just that After a recent health scare
(thankfully turned out to be minor) and me nearing the age of 60, I am becoming more and more discriminating
about how I spend my time.
And right now creating complex story telling animations etc just to show on youtube/vimeo is no longer how I want to use my diverse skill set.

By planetstardragon - 3 Years Ago
well, this moment in youtube shorts is a blessing for me,   it gives me a chance to market my music and 3D content ...if you just make animations,  i can see how this whole thing is not appealing,   but if you are doing something like selling books,  or a film series,  it makes more sense to make shorts to promote your product .....ie -  in my case,  I'm show casing new characters I'm making for my shop,  and promoting my music -   hopefully i can get one thing to promote the other.....so iti's really about branding for me..

just got this today in my email -  this encourages me to make a few shorts with my music and custom characters in it -   you guys are welcomed to use my music in videos,  no copyright strike,  any ad revenue my music makes allows me to save up for a coffee in 2030 @.000000000003 cents a play - gotta dream big!  -large coffee maybe even a donut by 2035!:w00t:

Sounds about right for the utterly disposable dross the youtube/tiktok algorithm prefers.:doze:
By planetstardragon - 3 Years Ago
technically it's always been this way,   i did some research on the hollywood industry in the past,  and basically most movies are a remix of some other movie,  and how b movies are a necessary evil  - it's a niche market for people that want something different lol.   Then you have all the hidden messages and psyops images in commercials and movies that the fcc would regulate -  and i could tell you the whole psychology behind music for radio -     it seems that modern tech,  trends and society without fcc regulations for such things, are showing the impact that erra of mind-marketing psyops had.   Youtube is just making stuff according to people's behavior and making bad habits from marketing conditioning, worse imo.

when there was no tv and just some radio drama,  orson wells ruled, when there were a few tv shows to choose from,  groucho marx ruled,  when cable came out, "nothing was on" in abundance, it became channel surfing as a sport,  and now with shorts -  it appears to just be a concentrated version of all that.

arguably, the quest for ultra realistic renders is part of that agenda,  because at one time a good story sold more books than covers,  but covers make you look at those first - and the birth of click bait.      a box of crackers -  whether it has paint chips or real crackers,  it's the box that's the hit maker lol

time to take your pet rocks out for a walk.

Awesome 👍  Is it Runway Gen2 ?
By planetstardragon - 3 Years Ago
yeah,  it's gen 2,  i purposefully chose an older low quality animation clip to see how much influence and how well the ai was able to figure it out,  was impressive.

but this service can be pricey,  it says 12 dollars a month,  but it comes out to a little over 8 dollars a minute of video, because the monthly credits are only 44 seconds,  and you need a monthly plan to buy extra credits.    you get 37 seconds free for a demo though.

Another interesting point  chatgpt said it can help me code my own AI set up with google -  actually more like I'd be chatgpt's assistant to plug in the code it gives me for  google ai - which is an irony lol

Actually 2D animation is a nice change of pace.
Here's the thing, The Blender Community has no interest in watching animation with Daz or Iclone figures.
The Daz/Iclone community ignores anything produced in Blender.
I no longer have the inspiration to put together complex, multi-app productions (unless commissioned), just for 82 views on Youtube.
I may get inspired again in the future but right now playing with MOHO is enough to keep me at least doing something creative.

off topic -

I don't know jack about code, but that's on purpose because I know i'd be great at it if i put my mind to it,  but i also know i'd have time for little else so i avoid it.

BUT chatgpt has me considering building an AI render engine -  with the AI doing the code,  it says we can have a functioning engine in a few weeks to a few months using google cloud vision

I may not know code,  but I have a knack for working with ai,  and that changes everything. :alien:

hello,

i start to study CTA3,
how to setup the screen size for yShorts?
By planetstardragon - 3 Years Ago
usually it's the reverse of hd -  so instead of 1920 x 1080  you flip the numbers 1080 x 1920
square works too

this is a square short I Just uploaded to start my new cyborgtex industries cyber parts corporation :P,  it's the future.  After AI / AGI becomes smarter than humans,  humans will have to upgrade to cyborg tech in order to survive.

thanks for your reply.
your shorts very smooth.
how many views?
By planetstardragon - 2 Years Ago
thank you, it's hard to say -  I see youtube constantly lowering my views,  so they are very low -  it's hard to take youtube serious these days,  even as a user i'm not a fan of the videos they promote as top brands anymore.  they seem to favor any video that uses digital marketing strategies like retention editing over actual entertaining content.  Once you understand retention editing,  you'll know why most top youtube videos look the same and how entertaining content doesn't matter anymore.
