It seems that CA5 does not allow users to transfer any of it’s standard characters to external editors (psd or svg) for further modification. If that is true, then it’s a massive downgrade from CA4.
I would appreciate a reply from the staff about this topic.

I think Reallusion will be hear your wishful. CTA5 powerful features spring dynamic you can try it, and smart gallery will help you manage your content, they are work hard in this application. I also think SVG workflow will be enhanced in the future patch, for now you can try to use illustrator make a standard character as SVG format then import to CTA5 that also achieves you want.

KanoEder, thank you for your reply. I have watched the videos and the new features are really fine. But using standard characters as a starting point to create modified characters in an external editor is an essential feature for many users. It would be very disappointing if this feature were not available any more. In fact users like me even expected an improvement: The ability to modify vector characters in a vector application. That was my question, too. I need someone to design a special character for me, or the ability to edit an existing character. I need one created quickly and maybe some others but that's further done the road.

The ability to export characters to editors was available in the more expensive Pipeline version of CA4. It follows that Reallusion will probably release a Pipeline version of CA5 in the future; then you can export.

I don't think there will be a pipeline version for CTA5 as RL removes pipeline versions of programs from other programs. However, even if such a thing happens, it was reported that when you qualify for CTA5, your programs and add-ons will be upgraded for free. As I said, I still don't think there will be a pipeline version. Because the comparison chart below is made according to the CTA5 and CTA4 pipeline versions. So CTA5 already has pipeline version for psd files. Since the program is new, I think some features will be added later.

If so, everything should work as in CTA4...

Thank you for your reply. Yes, in the meantime I figured out that external psd editing still works. Unfortunately external editing of vector characters in an svg editor is not implemented. Sylvia confirmed that to me. Maybe it will be available in a future upgrade.

I'm very new to CTA and was just getting in to modifying existing characters using the round-trip export/import to PSD provided in CTA4, and was also excited with the prospect of being able to do this in CTA5, but with a vector based SVG round-trip workflow. So, like others here was disappointed to discover this does not work using SVG's. I don't know if this will help anyone as you all may already know this, but I did find there is a bonus pack for CTA 5 just like there was for CTA 4 and it does include a PSD pipeline resource (similar to CTA4), a Vector Pipeline Resource (this describes how to make SVG characters) and a PDF and Google Slides instruction manual for how to use these resources. Templates are included for Affinity Designer, CorelDraw, Illustrator. Looks like Inkscape and Photopea also have some support . There are SVG samples for both the new Ariel and Johnny characters. Its not a round-trip experience so I hope that will come in future but at least now I can try building my own custom SVG characters. Best Wishes

The irony in this discussion is that the file we downloaded to install CTA5 was called CTA5_Pipeline _Enu which would suggest the obvious. I note that when I purchased CTA4 in 2019 the file I downloaded was called CTA4_Pipeline_Enu.
I must admit I am a little annoyed about the situation as I like to create my own actors, the packages I purchased in CTA4 for head creation etc no longer work in CTA5. I note that there is a package for an additional cost of $99.00 which I guess I might have to spend but I would have preferred to have known prior to purchasing CTA5. I now believe that the move from CTA4 to 5 was probably not my best choice.

KanoEder The fact that packages for head creation do not work anymore in CA5 is a reason to complain. I intended to buy tools like head creator and dress room in order to achieve more than 199$ to get CA5 for free. Luckily I decided to buy animation files instead. But everyone who bought the above mentioned items might be rightly frustrated.

Could you provide more details on "no longer work"? And please add a link to those products so I can check them out, I should own them...

Since my last comment I have now successfully managed to get G3 Facial Components_face maker to work. Whilst you can apply new heads to the new G3 Actors there is still the PSD connectivity issue. Cheers ......... Emlyn

If you create a new head on one of the new CTA5 actors it still blocks the transfer to psd not surprisingly.

Hi, i confirm : KEEP YOUR CTA4 PIPELINE ON BOARD ! If you want to work and modifi ALL your downloaded characters (G3-360 and other) (and onli on a psd format !) No way to open your characters on SVG editor because a conflict format between CTA5 and SVG-programs (Inkscape wanted please !) You could run the svg prog create one and transfert it.
At once, i can put my PSD characters from my CTA4 library (modifi or not with Krita) and i drop it in CTA5 (No available in the over way drop a Character from the CTA5 lib to CTA4 !)
Wait and see for the upgrade... soon

ems_place (11/5/2022) Alas I don't have Adobe Illustrator, have you tried it ? There is no "send to Ai" button...
@RL If the problem is that the new characters use SVG, why don't we get an Ai button instead of a greyed out PSD button.

There is a SVG button but it is greyed out. The fact that export to SVG is not available is unacceptable in my opinion.

Hi everyone,
Sorry, CTA does not currently support SVG-related characters and objects to Launch SVG editor, but we will add this feature in a future patch!
Stay tuned.

The SVG characters and the possibility of editing clothes on the go were so much looking forward to for me. While CTA5 is being patched, I'm switching back to CTA4.

UPDATE: This may be a partial answer to my question. Assets were converted to SVG, but can't be launched until later when that function is added - apparently it's not ready yet? https://forum.reallusion.com/527101/Lauch-PSD-Editor-in-Compose-mode-grayed-out
Have we truly lost the ability to launch most assets in external editor, am I missing something (I have them set in preferences), is it something that will be fixed or added later on?
A few of my custom characters will launch from composer to external editor (Affinity Designer and Photo) but most won't. The launch icons in composer are mostly grayed out. None of the new characters I've tried can be launched so editor. The Dummy works but I'm wondering if I use it to design a character will it allow me to launch back to editor. The main reason I bought CTA5 was for the SVG function which I read will be available later, but so far I've mostly lost that pipeline function. (UPDATE: It's the raster ones that are opening and ones that are still PSD I believe)

Launching raster assets to your PSD Editor is working exactly as it did in CTA4. Launching SVG assets to a compatible SVG editor is coming in a future update.
Please Note: Most of the embedded raster content from CTA4 has been updated to SVG in CTA5 which is why it can't be sent to your PSD Editor.

I'm slowly figuring this out, but sounding like I'll be using both CTA4 and 5 both for a while. Perhaps the release of 5 was a little premature? To me the tutorials improved over past ones, but the one on SVG is a bit confusing since it doesn't work "yet" like the video shows. https://courses.reallusion.com/home/cartoon-animator/pipelines-and-render/illustrator/
Thanks for the follow-ups Peter - knowing what's up helps a bit.

I anyways use Animate to create all my characters for game art. I hate using illustrator for creating stuff.
So animate> rigging in photoshop> to CTA5 is going to be my workflow.
So I think this unavailable feature is not going to bother me right now.

I try to open SVG with Inkscape in CA5. Inkscape run, and you can open a new object but no import from CA5 your work in progress. BUT you could design an " svg object" and import it in CA5.

Hi Vicki
Which character are you trying to edit? If it is a CTA4 character you should be able to drag the character into CTA5, then go to Composer mode and click "Launch PSD Editor".
