Hi,
Further to my recent post about iCLone 8 not making use of my computer's resources, it is now crashing frequently and it is extremely slow.
Trying to do Edit Motion Editor tasks for a character takes a very long time. And after some changes, it crashes.
Trying to restore the project, then does not work. It gives the errors attached.
Therefore, I have just lost all my changes after an hours work.
I also attached the DXDiag file after the crash.
Anyone who can give some help with this will be hugely appreciated.
Regards, Sam aka AidemIndi

I don’t know if others have the same problems, but iClone 8 doesn’t restore the files when it crashes. I have two computers with iClone installed and they both don’t restore the crashes. A window pop up telling me that the “memory could not be read”, like the Aidemlndi said. This is happening not only with one file, but with all the files. That way I can see that it’s not my computer that is at fault. It’s very inconvenient to have to redo what is already done.
I didn’t have that problem with iClone 7.

I have had crashes with iClone 8 and the project was restored.
One thing in general to consider that may influence speed is the amount of temp space you have. iClone writes to a temp directory (default is on C:) to store undo's and to be able to restore the project. If space on C: is limited you can set another temp directory in Preference.

Hi,
The problem is definitely with iClone 8.
I created a temp folder on a different disk (with plenty of space) than the default and the problem still happens.
If you try to restore the last crash, it gives a memory error as described in my previous post.
I've even switched paging off on Windows 10 (as I have ample memory). But no difference.
This needs to be fixed.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing crashing problems with iClone 8.
You mention that "the problem is definitely with iClone 8" but if it was solely an iClone 8 issue then it would be affecting a lot more people but that is not the case. For myself I have had iClone 8 running on a couple of systems. One is similar specs to your computer, and the other a lower spec laptop. On both machines iClone 8 is stable and performance is good. It is for this reason I think there is also something system specific that is contributing to the problems you are having.
However, I see in your other thread that you have contacted Support about this which is the best thing to do. Hopefully with your dxdiag.txt data they will be able to help you get this resolved quickly.

Hi Peter,
Can you tell me how big your projects are? Do they have a triangle count like mine? Please see attached.
I also attach an example delete of some low poly characters. I had to stop the screen recording because it took over 10 minutes to do a simple delete from this project.
Please advise.

I was wrong. My two computers don't restore crashes of all my files. I started another scene today and they restore the crashes of that scene. So I guess it had something to do with my previous scene. My two computers are linked into the same shared drive. That is why probably they behave the same with some scenes. Anyway, I'm having somebody look into this.

While I have not had the terrible issues of slowdown that you have, Sam, I have had unexplained crashes that do not restore several times. I suspect that one cause has to do with copying a keyframe in the timeline, and pasting it elsewhere (possibly especially at the beginning of the time line.) That seems to trigger the crash.
Anytime that I get the crash and the message that "the instruction referenced memory that could not be read" I also know that the restore is not going to work. It has happened often enough that I have come to recognize that pattern.
I believe it is an Iclone 8 issue, but one that is triggered by a very specific set of circumstances that might not crop up often in general use of Iclone 8. It's therefore tricky to find.
You and I have in common that we are working on large projects with many avatars. We have many different animation tracks going at the same time. The animations in Iclone 8 are different in some significant way than Iclone 7.. Here is a thread related to some (perhaps related) issues with the animation files in Iclone 8: SAVED PROJECT IS GIGANTIC
Possibly the animations are part of the culprit. The fact that pasting keys into the timeline can trigger crashes might indicate that. I may be totally wrong, but am adding my observations here to see if they might connect with someone else's experiences and give us a better sense of what is happening.

You are very quick to dismiss problems of Paid Customoers who really WANT things to work because we put a lot of time and money into this.. Are you bei9ng Paid by Relution or letting some other persinal interest Color your Replies? I have been having the Very Same problem with IClone 8 and CC4 Crashing Constantly and not saving the file correctly.. Reallusion has updated both prodcuts after Complaints but it has yet to solve this Major Issue! My IClone 7.9 and CC3 do not have this problem.. Neither does Iclone 8.12 and the CC4 that came with it.

I had at least 20 crashes today using the motion director and the look at feature. It works ok for simple animation but start to crash as soon as the project get more complex. I have a beast PC with Beast graphic card and 128 meg memory.
Is there a way to allocate more memory to Iclone or is it done automatically? I quit Unreal and all other apps but it seems like there is no way to avoid this.

I have a similar system to yours (except that I have a Intel CPU) and iClone will allocate as much memory as necessary. You have plenty of both RAM and VRAM.
I also find the current iClone much more unstable; it almost seems to get worse with each new release. I moved my temp directory to another drive, but that didn't do anything.

@animagic
Thanks for your invaluable feedback animagic. You are always there to help, it is appreciated.
I stop using Iclone for almost 2 years because I was losing so much time with the bugs. The Unreal live link pipeline workflow brought me back a few weeks ago. There are may great features in Iclone 8 and I believe the Reallusion team spent a tremendous amount of work to make it better but then the reality striked back when trying to use it a little more. Basically Iclone 8 is too unstable.
Thanks again for your input.

Motion director definitely has some flaws. I could not find a way to replicate on the fly but I remember several crashes in more complex scenes where clicking MD and using the rotate gizmo immediately made IC freeze and crash...

@toystorylab Thanks for your input. :)
@Peter (RL)
Thanks Peter for the suggestion. I submitted a support ticket with a system report. The problem I see is It will be hard to reproduce the problem for the Reallusion team, since everything work well up to a certain point where anything I add makes Iclone Crash. For example if I load the latest project, using motion director or adding "look at" targets, or adding facials with my iphone and liveface, I have instant crashes . It records for 5 or 10 secs than freeze and crashes. Using the 4 previous version of the project leads to the same results but take a little more time to crash because there is a little less for Iclone to handle. I have been working for a week on this project and it seems I will never be able to finish it to send the motions to Unreal. It seems like having 6 characters in a 5 minute project is to much to handle for Iclone 8.
Hopefully they will fix this soon.
Thanks again for you support!

I've had the same problem of iclone 8 becoming so unstable, that even clicking on something can cause it to lock up for a full minute. And if I scroll through the timeline too soon after clicking on something else, it halts and finally crashes. NOt only will it not restore, but if you choose to take the path of saving a restore file, it immediately crashes again. I thought it was due to the length of the animation. I left plenty of space at the end for modifications, and it was 24 minutes. That's crazy, so I split it into "scene". But the 7 minute scene at the beginning, is just as unstable. I'll likely have to throw out all that work and start over. I recommend: Don't go over 5 minutes. Don't use 60fps, use 30fps to reduce the total frames it might be scanning. And don't copy key frames and paste them elsewhere. It's pretty obvious that while it's "gone", it's scanning through stuff. I've tried and tried to delete anything that might be past the end of the current project length, and can't find any "leftovers" out there. But I'm still convinced the length of the original animation was the issue. So people ARE having this issue.

I've been a loyal iClone user for over 10 years. There is no denying that iClone8 has a stability issue -- I've used every version of iClone since V4, and I've never experienced anything like this. My iClone sessions crash at least 3-4 times a day (at least they are recoverable, most of the time). The length of the animation doesn't seem to matter, and my system has 32GB RAM and a RTX3090 (24GB VRAM), so it's not a matter of horsepower. In my case, it usually happens when I attempt to load a prop/character/new scene. It loads to somewhere between 20-30% and then freezes, eventually just closing the window and exiting the program.
I'm also not a fan of the extended loading time (due to texture loading).
Maybe instead of tying up a bunch of Tech Support folks with multiple customers experiencing the same problem, these resources could be better applied helping Development find a solution.

I have had many crashes as well. Someone mentioned copying and pasting keyframes, and I will affirm that has been a problem with crashing for me.(But not all the time) Also, if I accidentally delete some prop or avatar and then I click the undo function to restore, that has led to crashes (but not all the time). Restore sometimes works, but often does not.

I’ve had issues with restoring after a crash since a recent point release update, more often with CC4 though, and I never get an error. It simply shows a progress bar for loading the restore file after I pick where to save it, and when it finishes loading it results in an empty new project.

I will add to this, Iclone crashes ALOT.
I also have a very beefy machine Nvida 3090 with 64 ram and an SSD harddrive, so hardware should not be a problem.
Finally motivated to reply after the 15th crash with the motion alignment tool. But this can happen with anything, undo's, splitting clips, etc.
Hope the team is looking into this.

Well, I see I'm not the only one who is having this issue. FWIW, I have an abundance of RAM and an RTX4080. It's not a hardware thing.
I will say that, it seems to happen more with old scenes, iC7, say, with imported parts, than with new files with no imported parts. I need to import a few things and see what happens. (later) It is a file size or object size issue, new or old files.
I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. Our development team is eager to resolve your issues. However, addressing the system crash requires a significant amount of time and back-and-forth communication regarding files. Are you willing to assist us in resolving these problems together? Currently, I am considering creating a Discord channel to handle these issues. What are your thoughts on this? Is this acceptable to you?

I never really had a problem with it, but the last few months it's got worse and worse with the lock ups when you load a character or do something, and since the last update I can't even load any characters in iclone or cc4 saved before the last update. Only works if you have the preset at the top set to 'minimum'
I tried loading a character and then turning up the settings, you know, just to see some textures, but as soon as it tries to load any textures it crashes. Never had this new problem until very recently. (both iclone and cc do the same)
Pretty much all your characters made before the last update are unusable. I dunno if resaving them fixes it, because it crashes before I get the chance haha.

Hi all, Thank you for providing the information. "Some contents cause the crash when Enviroment Reflection is checked", we figure out it is caused by the NVIDIA driver update.
We have arleady reported it to NVIDIA and received the feedback. It will be corrected in the next version of the driver update. From NVIDIA: ETA is Nov 21st (Game Ready driver). Dec 12th is next Studio Driver
Currently it is recommended to back to driver 53x version first. you can get the older drivers from this website.

Just to confirm, Joanne's suggestion of taking the driver back worked for me. My project is only around 3.2GB and I have a 8GB RTX360Ti and it was running so slow and occasionally crashing. (although even on small projects it was feeling sluggish). Also, rendering was taking forever. Rolled it back and Iclone 8 ran like a dream again.
I have just updated to the December 12th driver and it's back to struggling again. So it appears Nvidea have not sorted out the problem. :(

i had the same problem with crashes. unchecked the environmental reflection, and things worked again however, iclone 7 was being effected too. so i uninstalled the Nvidia driver and rolled back to the 537.58 driver (studio version) and now everything is operating as it should. it is quite clear that the latest driver is at fault and causing the issues.

Yes, I did uncheck it and it does make an improvement. Unfortunately rendering with it checked back on still seems to take longer, at least for me. Interestingly, with the new driver it hasn't crashed like before, so some progress.

This is an old threat, but the issue of very slow performance is still there with the latest NVIDIA drivers. I got like 8 FPS or less with a small scene with two characters.
So I followed the suggestion made by Vidius to roll back to driver version 537.38 and that made a huge difference. Something to consider if you are struggling. Whatever NVIDIA was supposed to resolve--it did not help iClone.
