Submissions are now being accepted for the 2010 Machinima Expo. See here for more details.

"The Machinima Expo (MachinExpo) is an international festival of machinima films and events which takes place on the internet and in the virtual world of Second Life sometime in November. Now in it’s 3rd year of existence, the 2010 Machinima Expo promises to be the biggest and most complete festival yet.

The Expo is primarily about machinima films and the people who make them. We plan on featuring a major screening of machinima, a juried competition for machinima of high quality, workshops, presentations, interviews, panel discussions, installations and an awards ceremony. In addition, there will be numerous opportunities for those who attend to meet up and share information and ideas about animation and machinima.

Last year we screened over 50 films. We ran them 24/7 from a week before the Expo and into the week after. That gives you two full weeks to see all of the films we have chosen for this years Expo (2010). And unlike last year, you won’t have to come to Second Life to watch them. We will be working together with TMUnderground and Vimeo this year to make all of our films available to anyone who has access to the internet and a browser.

Our commitment to you is to bring the best films we can find, at the highest quality. In addition, we promise to make this years Expo the most accessible one yet. "

I entered last year and got nowhere :)

I'm hoping that this year I might have something, but when you spend 4 months making something and it dosen't even feature you do start to wonder if it's worth entering

Colin i look at it as a way to share your work with a wider range of audience - you've spent the time on the movie already, look at this as just another potential outlet for it

I did, but it wasn't shown!

I understand it from your view point and to be honest with just a hint of acknowledgement of my work from the panel would have been enough.  There's a saying "No use flogging a dead horse" and that's how I feel about Expo.

To be honest I'm 50 50 regarding if to submit?

Theres more to the Expo than just submitting your movie (yes, there are jury selections, but overall, its an Exposition, not a contest). Attending the expo, watching the screening and jury films, meeting new people, hearing new ideas, seeing new things/places, new ways to make a movie (Second Life is a fascinating way to make a film IMO), hearing what others think and understanding why they think that way. Mark your calendar and attend if you can. It can be a really great experience full of great people.

I've also gone through this type of disappointment (in contests as well as expos/event submissions that I have spent mass amounts of work on) but my previous expo experiences have helped me to widen my vision a bit and to step outside the cocoon of the creator at times (the cocoon that keeps things cozy and insular).

I hear what your saying I really do.

We all need different things to make us feel like what we are doing is worth while, to be honest I have only ever needed my family, anything else has been a bonus.

I like the idea of Expo, I think it will do all the things you mention for those willing to participate.  Personnaly I don't like "Second Life" I have a life and that's demanding enough :)  I've had a go at the software and never really took to it, if it ain't happening after an evening then for me it ain't going to happen.

Maybe it's me but my gut feeling is it's not my thing.  But like I said I might enter I might not, I'm not worried either way.

Oh and it's nice and warm in my cocoon, real life is full of s!%t so sometimes spending time in it helps deal with life :P

Don't forget: Submission is FREE. And it's not a very demanding process, so what have you got to lose? A little time and effort filling in the form, and putting your video on Vimeo. That's about it.

:D

Oh, and you won't necessarily have to come into Second Life to attend! Plans are underway (as stated in the original post) so that you can see the Expo from any browser, without entering SL.

This isn't a competition, but a fun chance for everyone to help out by promoting the Machinexpo.

Machinexpo 2010 Trailer Guidelines

Concept
* Use a machinima engine to remake a favourite film or TV moment,
* For dialogue, substitute the word ‘expo’ at vital moment(s),
* The film does not need to be any longer than 30s long, but can be longer if necessary (no epic movies, please!),
* Add the expo logo at the end (see below)
* Upload to youtube, add tag #mexpotrailer
* See this page for up-to-date promo info (and logo download) you are welcome / encouraged to include in your video: http://www.machinima-expo.com/promo.htm
* Upload your video on more sites if you’d like.
* Have fun!

The films will be gathered together in a playlist and used to promote the machinexpo 2010

Help
* Examples - Citizen Kane..sub expo for Rosebud, When Harry met Sally she shouts ‘expo expo expo’ in cafe scene, in Star Trek, Spock could say ‘It’s expo Jim, but not as we know it’, ET would say ‘ET phone expo’.
* Subtitles are fine.
* Films with no dialogue can use the word ‘expo’ replacing background text, eg in street signs or posters.
* If your engine / editor makes it difficult to add logo just use text
* Yes, do use your own language, we reach more people that way!
* Remember, if you use music, to choose tracks which youtube won’t object to. See Jamendo for some great creative commons music, or have fun making your own.
* Use the guidelines as inspiration only , if you get stuck just go with the flow and see what happens!

I'd like to see more iClone entries in this year's Expo. So please, if you haven't already submitted your film, do so soon!

From the Machinima Expo Forums...

"In order to allow Machinima directors and producers to have a little time to submit their film to the MachinExpo 2010, we have decided to extend the submission period for one week. This makes the new deadline:

Tuesday, September 7th at 12PM Pacific Time

In addition, we have decided to extend the submission period for the Spanish/Latin entries to Tuesday, September 14th at 12PM Pacific Time. We feel that because we added Spain and Portugal several weeks after submissions started, it’s only fair to those Spanish and Latin machinima directors to have a bit more time than everyone else.

The Expo has received well over 130 entries to date and are very pleased with the quality of the submissions. We plan on announcing the films that will screen at the Expo along with those films which we will send on to our Jury sometime in September. We are also planning a surprise announcement about a new category of film screening at the Expo this year. More info to come.

Hi,

I've had the pleasure of being selected on the "Highlight Reel" with "Fallen Angel" to which I was both surprised and humbled to be in such great company :D

I'm just glad that iClone has been represented really well and I wish all the best to Kurzel - "Moonlighter by Igor Tkachenko" who made it into the Jury Selections, and after watching the other 15 films this one for me is the best!

Good luck to all involved.

Cape!

By thebiz.movies - 15 Years Ago
Congrats Cape.  Glad to see you participating.  I agree its good to see Iclone make a much bigger splash this year.  I got to get to watching movies to see who I think the winners will be.  Hope to see at the Expo!

Is there a direct Link to where Cape & Kurzal's Clips can be viewed?
By Dulci - 15 Years Ago
One of the stumbling blocks last year to more of us attending was that you had to be logged into Second Life to participate. Whether you just didn't want to go into Second Life or couldn't because of the lag, it was a deterrent.

This year you do NOT have to be logged into Second Life to check out what's going on. You can hop in and out of the festival all weekend long through the Expo Web Portal. All you need is an internet connection and you're good to go.
