If you set the Background to Black then you can render out transparent PNG images.

Open the Project settings and in "2D Background" uncheck "Activate Image" and select Black for the Background.

Ignore this post
having a transparent background is quite possible with CC4

While waiting for RL to fix the problem, I found a workaround

how to render a character with a transparent background :

Preparation

1 - go to template project
2 - load the project : 3. cloth physics
3 - in the Scene / props pane : delete "Backdrop

(to avoid making this manipulation each time, save the project)

Render

1 - Format : image / PNG
2 - if necessary, adjust the other parameters
3 - Export

To render a custom character

replace the character (from project 3. cloth physics) with your own character and render it.

Honestly, I do not see any difference between CC3 and CC4 on this matter. Works exactly the same in regards to getting transparent background.
Note: There would be no transparent background with F10 (preview mode). Only Export from Render tab would reveal it.
Background color also does not matter (it affects the matting though), but black would be the most appropriate in most cases.

Right, having a transparent background is possible with both CC3 and CC4.
Just go to "Project settings --> 2d Background" and uncheck "Activate image" then render as PNG.
Sorry
