I notice during my animations  that some keyframes are filled and some are empty. 20 minutes of googling did not yield any answers to their differences. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks in  advance!

There are more limbs in a set than it is shown on the timeline  (LLeg example comprised from Thigh and Calf)
When one or more of the limbs in a set are not assigned a value for particular keyframe, that keyframe is hallow.
Otherwise it is solid.

Here is explanation with Curve Editor
