Correcting the shadow under a hat

Knew this fix but has totally left me - or upgrades have done away with it! Problem: put a hat on a character and where there should be a solid shadow there is a line of light, then the shadow. Looks really stupid, so, please: help!!! Thanks.

It's the shadow threshold under the material settings.  There are also other shadow settings that can affect this but it's usually the threshold that needs adjusting.
