Dear artists and IClone lovers, We just shot a little film in IClone 7. We did our best to get everything out of IClone. There could be some improvement as there are a lot of bugs. However, here is our first movie in IClone 7:
And the 4K Reupload:
We like to get your thoughts and feedback and appreciate negative and critical feedback as well.
Software used: IClone 7 (Animation, Level Design, Renderoutput) CC3 (Modeling of characters) PopcornFX (some particles) Perception Neuron (some of the animations) Davinci Resolve (clip arrangement, motion blur and some minor visual effects) Goldwave (main soundline, some sfx inside Davinci)
Hardware: Pen and paper π
PC: GPU Nvidia 1080 | CPU I7800 series | 16Gb RAM | 4TB Diskspace We will try to answer your questions and thoughts as best as I can.
Best regards

I do not usually comment much on showcase productions (usually give a *like* if I like it), but I see the lack of response here, which is kind of odd :ermm: Maybe people are scared they have to watch full 41 min of it before making a comment?
I am not a pro and will express my personal (not a scientific cinematography) opinion.
Like (brief): Staging, animation, voices, camera, FX.
Did not like (longer): 2K render, I could not watch it on my main PC screen (even though I have 1440 QHD resolution). I had to watch it on a big screen TV with computer attached and 2K res. Only then it was watchable.
I know it is hard to catch all the cloth/hair/patches pocks through the body... I just hate those.
But my main complain is lights. Again, this is IMHO. The dynamic range in most of the scenes is very low. I understand you were trying to create an atmosphere (thick air maybe) in underground facility.. etc (and it is hard to make in iClone). Yet the low range makes it kind of flat. I'd like to see more vivid/contrast picture (like those toon shaded characters "memory stills" you had there).
Anyhow, congratulations on this great production, and good luck in the future! ;)

Thank you for your feedback! I understand your points. Especially on the light and physics. We were a little lazy about the fabric penetration / skin weights as we wanted to speed up the process, which we regret afterwards too. The scenes may look smeared due to the Youtube compression. Our 4k render output on the hard drive doesn't look washed out as it does on YouTube. I may have made some wrong settings while rendering that YouTube doesn't like. However, we are trying to improve and are very happy about your feedback (especially your critical π). regards RATLABS

Hi This is a great production for me. I love the characters, the voice actor, animations are really good at my eyes, and I like the lighting. Thank you for sharing

I'm new to animation and still growing in my experience but thought I'd share my thoughts (for its worth ;) I would appreciate constructive criticism, if I were to post my own movie.
Let me start by saying that I'm really impressed! I'm not to big on the PG 16 language (personal choice, so no judgement ;) but think you did a great job with most of the big elements:
* The overall storyline * A movies "pace" - which even the Hollywood movies get wrong sometimes * Some great camera shot selections * Your basic animations turned out good (which is great considering iClones limitations around blending motions) * The Sound Design was good as well (a few voices quality was not that great but the soundtrack was well selected and not overpowering) * And I loved your post production editing effects, which added to the movie (and didn't "take away" from it like some effects do)
I also appreciated you using Real voice actors (some were talented and others no so much) but it definitely beats any A.I. voices (in my opinion at least)
Great job! I can see that lots of work went into putting it together. Glad you saw it through. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

Despite the fact that Iβm not really into zombie apocalypse stuff, I did watch it all the way through, which is a credit to the production quality. Aside from a few missed typical iclone errors, I thought it was very impressive. I liked the lighting and especially the graphics and art styling. I was puzzled why the girl in the glasses top changed colour half way through and maybe her hair style and the type of top she was wearing, but it was no big deal. I checked out some of your other videos and noticed you do tributes using game footage and wondered whether this actually incorporated game footage with iclone content added? Iβve never done that, but often thought it would be an interesting technique, especially with scenery and lighting, though I have used flowscape scenes on billboards for backgrounds. As I said the subject matter is not my type of thing, but I recognise the hard work that went into creating a project of this size and the quality of production you achieved. Well done! Cheers, Tony

Yeah, I'm not a big zombie fan either, but I also watched all the way through. I thought the production overall was very good - especially if for a first iClone attempt. I was wondering if you completed this before the Accu-lips update, as I think the lip sync could be "tightened-up" a little. Sometimes the actors looked like they were 'mumbling' even though the audio was clear -- maybe crank up the viseme strength as well? Anyhow, nice job - will definitely watch your next effort.

@TopOneTone
Thank you very much for your feedback. We will try to avoid these typical IClone issues in next projects. The scene where Valerie (the girl with glasses) changed her costumes where thrown out, as we wanted this movie to be less then 40 Minutes. We are trying to prevent further scenes that may seem illogical. The scenes were all made without any additions from the game. However our movie is a tribute to this game called Resident Evil Resistance. The voice actors were friends we met during the game.
Unfortunately our next movie will be based on Resident Evil again. But maybe you will like it again π
If you like, we can provide some alpha footage and spoilers or we simply put out the final render when it's ready.
Best regards

@gordryd
This were made before the update. I for myself do not believe, that Accu Lips will improve it that much. We did not use autosync features with voicelines. We made it with Expression Puppet and some key viseme animation. Yes a few lines were presented softly.

@Wholesome 3D
Thank you very much for your feedback. May you explain what you meant by: "PG 16 language"? I don't understand what you meant by that π
Glad you liked it.

Hi Ratlabs,
I was referring to the use of language. Like I said, I prefer watching movies without swear words (i.e. movies that are PG 13 and below) but that's a personal thing - so no judgement from me, this is just personal preference.
In response to your further comments:
I would love to see some Work In Progress footage of your new Resident Evil movie. And maybe a Tutorial on your general workflow.

Ah okay, as english isn't our native language we didn't know pg 16. Me for myself do not like the overusage of swear words either. But as we wanted to appear the character as near as possible as they appear in the game, we had no chance.
We are currently looking for some voice actors who like to join our next project. Here are some characters with their original voice, or voices that we like to have:

This is something you should be proud of. I found this to be very interesting to watch. There were some fun moments, especially the combat I thought was done well.
Things to improve would be: Voice acting (It can be hard to get all pro VA's for a project, especially if they are doing it for free, but if you do it really makes a difference) Lip Sync - Didn't really match up that well, and this is a big time consumer so if you were trying to save time I can understand why you'd skip on tweaking it to perfection. It takes a long time. Animations - Some were fantastic, others could use a little work. Definitely some slippage of walking especially the woman at the end after the credits sliding across the floor to the bed. Lighting - Nailed the RE look but I don't think there was enough contrast as someone else stated.
Either way it was enjoyable, and again be proud. It takes a lot of work and dedication to create a film from start to finish. Props for doing right by the actors and creating an end credits sequence for them. That's huge in my opinion, especially if they helped for free. It's one of the things I always do in my films as well.

Wow, nice work. I am a total fan of RE. Working through the Village right now. When I saw the characters I thought they favored RE: Resistance which you confirmed. Great work I was thinking of doing something like this myself in iclone but put it on the far back burner being that I have other things I am working on.
This is very inspiring for me! :)

Maybe a bit late, but here is the desired movie rerendered in 4k to prevent youtube from giving it a lower codec. The colors and contrast looks much better now.
Have fun watching and keep creating:

I have never used iclone and have not went into animation as I just started learning cc3 and trying to learn blender. I have come from a photoshop, photography background and alot of my work is horror based. I thought it was good and the bad things I didn't like was probably the resrictions you had making it, so it would be hard for me to say you should do this to fix it. I dont know what your zombies look like in cc3 but some of them looked alright in the video but others looked odd looking. I kind of liked the very start when it was done in fps mode so I wonder if that would be a better way to go too tell a story. good job non the less.

Didn't see your post when it came out.
horror movies are not my kind of movie so I wouldn't comment on the story ;) However this is the first time I have seen a movie in Iclone creatively lit and very appealing as seen in UDK . You prove that Iclone, used properly, is capable of having a cinematographic rendering (it does not mean "realistic") Congratulations!!! The only thing that could be added would be a little more life on the faces.

Looks like a good movie. Pretty good animation. I watched only excerpts. I will try to watch more tonight. But Iβm not sure if the 4K version definition is really.that much better than the 2K version, especially after the YouTube compression. Itβs really hard to see the difference, IMO. And I have a 4K monitor.
