I am new to this, so I'm sure there is a simple solition, but I haven't been able to find it. When I render hair in Iray, the hairline looks terrible despite looking reasonably good in the real-time- preview..

Render with default settings 1000 iterations.
What am I missing?

Hi...
Try adjusting the "Max GI Bounces" slider shown below. This should help for any of the Smart Hair elements including the new hairstyles.
