Is anyone with CA4 Pipeline also using the products "360 Head Tools, 360 Face Tool, 360 Hair Tool" from the store?
Are they useful?  Are they better than just using the CA4 Pipeline with the PSD templates to create custom characters?

Cheers

No one seems to be answering you and I wish I could give you a more solid one other than -- *I* don't see any reason to use them.

But...  I'm still struggling with rigging in CA4 anyway.  But here's one of the bottom lines -- if you look at, for example, Kai's videos, he never shows using those tools.  It's always "just replace this layer with another".  I'd love to see a video showing the advantages of using these tools (which I actually have).  The only ones I've found so far are either so short (literally seconds) and/or uncommented (so who knows what's going on?) and unhelpful.

That's what I was afraid of.  I would be interested in the  "360 Head Tools, 360 Face Tool, 360 Hair Tool" from the store, but I just don't see the advantagses of using it and different than just using the PSD templates that came with CA4 Pipeline.
That may explain why I am not getting more help or responses here.  It's probably not worth buying.

Hi Guys,

I thinks the tools should have been included with Cartoon Animator 4 pipeline. These tools just keep adding costs to the software.   I was also looking at the price.  $100 USD  is a bit expensive for an add on product.

have a great week.

Hi all. I find this particular topic very interesting and timely. You see, I was of the same opinion as many of you about the 360 Head Tool, Face Tool and Hair Tool. I figured "Why do I need to buy something that is already included in the software?". But then I spoke to Warwick Hays, one of Reallusions top character developers. Warwick has been using these tools to develop his new character for his entry in to this years Animation @Woek competition and he showed me what the Tools can really do. Whilst Cartoon Animator provides you with the tools you need to create a 360 Head, the add on Tools help refine, simplify and offer diversity that can be set up much quicker than completing the whole prcoess manulally (which is the way Ive always done it).

So to those who would suggest that the 360 Head Tools are an unecessary purchase, you are correct. You do not need them to create a 360 Head. But if you're serious about character creation and speeding up your work flow,, they are an invaluable tool. I will speak to Warwick Hays and see if i can get him to give some insight in to this for you.

And to those who would suggest that $100 is too expensive for an add on, again, you dont NEED to buy it to do the job and get quality results. I think full credit to Reallusion for not simply adding these Tools in and increasing the software price. Theyre giving you choice. Buy it if you want it, or dont buy it if you dont need it.

I think the problem is that they don’t have any video tutorials explaining how to take advantage of these tools and how is different than doing it the standard way.  Maybe a good webinar can demonstrate that it is worth the investment.  I still don’t understand how it can be that good. It seems like we still need to move all parts into The correct folders and position everything on the cross hairs to line up the eyes, mouth, etc just like using the pipeline templates.
A video tutorial demonstrating it in detail and comparing it to the pipeline template way may just do the job.
Are you aware of such a tutorial video that you could share with us?

Another tool that would be missing is a 360 Body Tool to go with this, otherwise we will still be using the pipeline templates anyway.

Ha! Very timely indeed! I am just now trying to work with the tools and came here for help.

I purchased the set a little while ago, and I've only had time to start using Cartoon Animator this weekend.

I had no problem following the tutorials on the product page to add a 360 head and using Pipeline creating a simple 360 head (lots of fun) but I can't fine where to access the actual tool they show in the tutorial. Same wihtteh 360 hair, I see the templates on my drive, but I can't find a way to access it from inside Cartoon Animator. I'm not sure if I've installed everything correctly or not.

I'm using it on a Mac; if anyone can point to a a tutorial on actually accessing the tools, or even a menu sequence, that would be appreciated.

An excellent idea. I will make some suggestions that a dedicated video for the 360 Head Tool might be in need. No promises, but we'll see what we can do. I think you'll find Warwick Hays will be quite a big help when he gets in here too.

What do you think?  Are the 360 Head Tools really that good?  A lot better than the pipeline templates?
By Hayzie - 6 Years Ago
Hey everyone,
I have only been using the head tool so far and at first, I thought the same as some of you... you set up the head with the template and tweak it, why not just set it up myself. So I did and you have to spend a lot of time fiddling around with your character to get it to the same point that the template does in seconds.
I see it as a massive time saver and fantastic starting point to get my head set up to about 85-90% done. And the same goes for the hair tool, haven't used it yet but if it's anything like the head tool I think I'm going to love it.

I feel the pricing isn't too expensive and the way I see it, anyone that thinks it's too much would also be throwing their arms up at Reallusion if they included it (and all the other addons) into the software and raised the price to cover it. At least this way we all get to use Cartoon Animator at a great price and if you want to make things easier for yourself, speed things up or play with the newer technologies you can buy the add ons. If you don't want all of that you aren't being made to pay for it.

As for tutorials, I found the videos on the product page were all I needed to get going. They aren't there to teach you every scenario but more to give you the how-to so you can play with it and figure out what works best for you. I think the original promo video was a little confusing and made it look like a separate interface where you could swap out elements etc. Which is kind of the case but it's all done within Cartoon Animator. It's actually really easy to use once you have watched the videos on the product pages (I watched them a couple of times to let things sink in and click).

I'm flat out trying to get my entry for the Animation@Work competition done but after I will put together a video showing how I use the tools...hopefully that will help some of you.

I am yet to use them myself. But having spoken to Warwick Hays today about this exact topic, he got me all enthused to give them a go. Anything that can potentially speed up my character creation process is a good investment for me.

Also, I have noticed that Warwick Hays has joined this conversation. His username is Hayzie. Listen to what he has to say. Hes a good man and very talented.

Hi Hayzie   ,
Thanks for the reply.
For me, is not just about the price.  If I can see a comparison and good video demonstration of the 360 Head Tools vs the pipeline templates,  this will allow me to see if I can use it and spend the money.  The videos on the product page make it look similar to the pipeline templates which is why I am asking these questions here. It looks interesting, but I need more demonstrations to get a good feel for how it works.  A webinar or a good complete tutorial video will take care of clarifying everything.

Ah, I think I know what you mean... so you are using the free 360 characters that come with CA and changing the sprites to make your own? If that's the case and that is the only style of character you want then I guess you are good to go. Where I see the tool being handy is if you have or want to make different styles of characters ie. eyes closer together or mouth lower or higher on the face. Then different hairstyles too, which can be a pain to figure out how they should be set up.
The tool can be used pretty much the same as swapping out parts on characters, the tool just gives you a larger range of characters to start with. Because each need to be set up differently to make the head turn work.

Hopefully, I will eventually understand the advantages of the 360 Head Tools.  I appreciate your comments and help.

I am using the PSD templates that came with CA4 pipeline edition.

I am more interested in creating my own unique characters from scratch.  I am an artist and cartoonist.  I don't like using generic characters that everyone else is using.
If the 360 Head Tools allow me to be more effective at creating my own characters ( significantly more than just using the pipeline templates ), then I can see the value.  But with a good video tutorial comparing both methods will clarify everything for me.
Also, I would still need to go thru all the pipeline template steps for the bodies, since these are only head tools.  Correct?

I'm currently able to add the 360 head templates to a body and use it to create a custom character very quickly; I was very impressed and found that having that as a time-saver, I feel it's almost paid for itself already. Having my first custom 360 head character up and animating in under 90 minutes, for a total newbie, I found very exciting.
As mentioned above, once I've got my character back into Cartoon Animator I can't seem to access the tool to, say, adjust the ears.
As well, I can't find any way to access the Hair tool at all. I see the templates on my drive, but have no way of actually using them.
If you're able to point me in the right direction, that would be great, if not I'll try talking to tech support.
Thanks.

Yes,  am looking forward to Hayzie's reply to my last comment.  He has been very helpful so far. Thanks Garry.
What else do you recommend to create custom characters from scratch?

By coolhewitt24 - 6 Years Ago
Hi Everyone,  Its great to see a lot of people participating in the chat.  Customers purchase Cartoon Animator 4 for the exclusive purpose of custom character creation.  These tools are directly related to character creation therefore they should have been included with pipeline.  It costs $199 USD to purchase a license for Cartoon Animator 4 pipeline.  The head creation tools cost $100  as an add on product. This means the 360 head creation tools are 50% of the cost of a full version of the software.  In my opinion, the add on feature should be around $30 to $40 USD.  The tutorials should have been done before the launch of product.  I hope everyone has a great work week and protects their health with social distancing.
By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
When I create a character from scratch, I use Corel Draw to draw the actual character if it is vector style, or Photoshop if it is image based. Then I break up all the parts, save them as PNGs and substitute them in to a character template directly inside Cartoon Animator. Im afraid Im still a bit old school and dont use the PSD templates.
By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
"Customers purchase Cartoon Animator 4 for the exclusive purpose of custom character creation." Not true at all. Many many people purchase this software to create animations using content included in the software or content they purchase from the 2D Makretplace. Not everyone wants to create their own characters.

"These tools are directly related to character creation therefore they should have been included with pipeline." It seems unfair to expect people who do not want to create their own characters to have to spend more on software for features they wont ever use. And if the add ons were included in the original software, obviously the price would need to be increased.

"The head creation tools cost $100  as an add on product." Which you only have to buy if you are interested in creating your own custom 360 heads. And dont forget you dont HAVE to buy this add on to create custom 360 heads. These add ons are designed to give serious character developers the opportunity to speed up their workflow.

"In my opinion, the add on feature should be around $30 to $40 USD." Understandably, $100 is a lot of money for some people. Which is why they have the CHOICE to either purchase the add on to create custom 360 Heads or use the 360 Head creator tools included in the software for the original price. This can still be done. They are not limited or disadvantaged in ANY way.

The simple fact here is, the 360 Head tool is OPTIONAL. You dont HAVE to buy it to create custom 360 Heads. Everything you need to do that is included in Cartoon Animator already. However, if you are a developer who is serious about character creation, then these tools are invaluable because they speed up production and offer additional templates, and regardless of price, they are great value for money. The add ons will never be needed by EVERYONE. Thats why theyre OPTIONAL.
By Hayzie - 6 Years Ago
Ok, so here we go....
First off I'm with Garry on what he said. These extra tools are all optional and you can still create 360 heads exactly the same as the Head Tool and Hair Tool, it will just take you longer. I created my characters without using these tools for last years Animation@Work comp and for my Monsters characters that are for sale. They came out great but I can say that having the Tools and templates for this years comp has been super helpful and has saved a lot of time.

FYI, having the Tools doesn't replace the fact that you still need to tweak and know how to make 360 heads. It just speeds the process up A LOT!

I don't agree that these tools should be included, we have gone over the fact that it would increase the price but also on that logic that they should be included...Reallusion should include EVERY character, asset and motion they have created (which we get a lot for free anyway). Tools are effectively assets that help you to get to your end result.

On the topic of the templates... I see those as the necessary 'parts' or 'joints' the character requires. Even though make my own custom characters they still need to work within the software and with motions, so they need a certain amount of hand, eye, mouth sprites and certain joints like the neck, hip, arms etc. From there I create my character within those parameters.

[quote]Also, I would still need to go thru all the pipeline template steps for the bodies, since these are only head tools.  Correct?"/quote]
Basically yes, if you want your character to move it needs to bones. Although you can create your own 'free bone' characters by adding bones how you want but they don't work so well with motions. Great if you have an odd shape and want to keyframe everything yourself though.
Hope that helps!

It would be nice to see tools like 360 Head Tools for G2 characters with full turns for heads and bodies without having to use Adobe Flash.

Hayzie, where can I go see your characters for Animration@Work ?  It sounds like fun.

By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
I have Affinity Designer and use it for creating the eyeball setup for facial puppetry in my characters because Cartoon Animator wont allow you to set that up inside the software (which is a constant irritation for me! Reallusion, sir, are you listening!) Glad you like my characters. Thank you. I have just hit my 100th All Star and number 101 will introduce a new character named Amber with a new look.
By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
I dont think you'll see g3 360 heads for G2 characters. What Im hoping for, is the next version of Cartoon Anaimtor will combine the best of G2 and G3 characters to create G4 characters that can turn both their head AND body.
By toonmanbill - 6 Years Ago
If anyone here knows of any links to some videos demonstrating the 360 Head Tools ( besides the sales ones on the reallusion store website ), please post them here.  It will help a lot of people on how this compares with the pipeline templates.

Cheers!

I was researching like crazy about a week ago if I should purchase the 360 head tools and hair , I really couldn’t find a convincing reason to but I forced myself to purchase it anyway. I still don’t see a need yet but hopefully I will with the possible webinar,I had been using the replacement method which worked fine but now practicing using the PSD with Affinity Photo.
I know what you mean about not being able to edit the eyes from the program using my image editor and understanding the eye roll has been difficult also.
By coolhewitt24 - 6 Years Ago
Hi Brothercoleman,

I couldn't find a reason to buy it. The current G2 and G3 character creation process is fine for me. The company hasn't convinced to purchase an expensive add on product. As for the tutorials, still waiting. I wonder if they can produce a simple tutorial before Christmas. LOL Take care my friend.
By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
Thats precisely the beauty of these add on Tools. You dont HAVE to buy them in order to get full use of the all the features of Cartoon Animaator. You alrready have everything you need. And of course, if Reallusion included these with your initial download and charged you for something you say you dont need, then you would have reason to complain that the software is too expensive. So this works out well for users like yourself. After all, the add on Tools are designed to speed up the workflow of character creation and give more options only to those developers who are serious about creating quality characters in faster time.

And fortunately it wont matter to you how long it takes for the tutorial videos to come out since you said you wont be buying it anyway. For those who are interested however, I did post previously that Kai spoke of possibly creating some tutorials in the future.

I don’t think people would complain that the software is too expensive as long as the addition makes sense and it’s a powerful tool.  This particular tool doesn’t seem to add much and including it with the software without charging extra would make more sense.

Maybe Kai will prove me wrong when he does the webinar. Hopefully soon. I am looking forward to it.

Agreed.  The tools should come together with Cartoon Animator 4.

By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
"I don’t think people would complain that the software is too expensive as long as............." Yes, they would. Thats what they do. To be honest, how do you win? If you include the add on Tools and increase the price, people say its too expensive. If you give them the option of buying the Tools only if they need them, they complain because they werent includdd witht he software. Youre never going to win with everyone. I think the business model of allowing people to buy nly what they need as they need is is a good one.

"This particular tool doesn’t seem to add much" Youre right. Ive explained before that everything these add-on Tools can do is already possible in Cartoon Animator. You dont HAVE to have them. They designed ONLY for people focussing on character creations who want to speed up their workflow and have extra template options.

"including it with the software without charging extra would make more sense." These tools were not created when the software was first released, so that would not have been possible. As new features and advances for the software become available, like the new After Effects plugin (which is free), they get released. And I believe credit should be given to Reallusion for continuously updating and improving this awesome software.

By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
These tools could not have come with Cartoon Animator because they were not developed when the software was released. Advances in the software, like this and plugins like the new After Effects plugin are developed after release. Some of those are free and some you have the option of paying for should you want them. But you do not need the 360 Head Tool to be able to make custom heads if you dont want to pay the price, because everything yo need to do that is included in the origina software.

That is the reason that it should be included.
Something that does not seem to add much, I believe, shouldn't be exorbitant in the price increase.

I have no indication other than Kai saying it was a good idea to address this.
By Garry Pye (RL) - 6 Years Ago
"That is the reason that it should be included." It couldnt be included because it hadnt been created when the software was released. You do get that, right?
"Something that does not seem to add much, I believe, shouldn't be exorbitant in the price increase." Its not. Its $100. And its optional. Youre complaining about something that your are not forced to buy. If you feel its too expensive, then dont buy it. Because you dont need it. It is only for people serious about character design looking to speed up their workflow.

"It will probably be awhile before you see any tutorials about this product.

That's what I was afraid of.  it must not be a good product of priority and necessary.  I'll just stay away from it and advise others to do the same.

It couldnt be included because it hadnt been created when the software was released. You do get that, right?
"Something that does not seem to add much, I believe, shouldn't be exorbitant in the price increase." Its not. Its $100. And its optional. Youre complaining about something that your are not forced to buy.

I am here not to argue.  Take my comment as a feedback instead.
It can be added later as an update with latest features.

Toonmanbill, the quote "It will probably be awhile before you see any tutorials about this product." was posted by Coolhewitt24, not me. Given that Coolhewitt24 does not work for Reallusion, and has admitted "I couldn't find a reason to buy it" the comment is based on having never actually used it.

Youre basing your judgement of "it must not be a good product of priority and necessary." based off having never used it yourself taking only the word of others who have not used it. I would recommend taking criticism of this product at least from someone who has used it.

If you'd prefer not use it because of the opinion of others who havent used it, thats unusual, but your decision. Suggesting you'll "advise others to do the same" suggests that you have something against the product or the company on a personal level.

Just to add to what Garry has already explained, we do hope to have a webinar on the 360 Head Tools sometime in November. For now I would advise watching the short "how to" guides on the product pages a few times to get a better understanding of how the 360 Head Tools work. Once you get to better understand how the templates work I think you will find these can be a real time saver.

I've read everything in this thread and decided to chime in with my own experience with the tools in case there may be others who are looking for this information.

I purchased the 360 Face and Hair during the Black Friday Sales.  I am brand new to Cartoon Animator and so thought having these tools may prove to be indispensable to me.  Prior to the purchase I created a character from scratch and successfully brought it in utilizing the white paper templates.   I was disappointed to see that my character took the EXACT same amount of time to bring in to CTA4.  I attempted to do this AFTER watching the tutorial that was discussed earlier.

These are simply a series of templates that is not unlike the templates that comes with the software.  The process is exactly the same.  You have to line up all of the cross hairs to their corresponding facial parts and place everything in the correct folders.  There is not a separate UI that aids you in placing things in the correct place like I had first believed.

As far as the Hair tools, i could not get those to install in the proper place.  It was in the application folder, yet not in the folder that made it show in CTA4.  I attempted to manually place it in the appropriate place to no avail.  I contacted Reallusion for a refund.

For anyone who would like to see if these templates are any different , I would suggest trying the sample "Head tools" template that the software has.  I do not see that the positioning of the template's nose, eyes,  and mouth made any difference whatsoever, no matter what my character looked like.  The crosshair positioning is what the software refers to when bringing the character in.  The template itself is erased prior to saving.

Hi LiliPoofz,

Could you help me to record a video for me?
I could give you some suggestions.

Thank you for being so kind.  I've already received a refund and erased the product from my system.

Just a quick question - I'm sure a previous entry "Same wihtteh 360 hair, I see the templates on my drive, but I can't find a way to access it from inside Cartoon Animator." has been raised, as I can see a portion of a posting on this site (not all) under this forum with a google search.
Having installed G3 360 Hair Tool the files are showing on my drive in the expected location (according to the log) but Control Panel will not show/offer them. Any ideas as to why?

You need to take your character into Composer mode. Then in Content Manager under the Head tab you will see G3_360 Face Tools and G3 360 Hair Tools (see below).
