I've started my WIP #1 and will be using the artstation portfolio for the WIP. If anyone wants to follow along then click on the link below.

I've decided to create an orc as my first submission. I know, how original right?

Well, I'm challenging myself with this one. I have uninstalled all purchased morph sliders and will only be creating the character with the default CC morph sliders and ZBrush. I'll also be trying to stick to the default skingen tools.

Armor and clothing will be made from scratch also. I think I'll be aiming for a realistic orc so this will probably be under the realistic category.

Feel free to follow along.

I have added made a youtube playlist also which will consist of clothing/armor creation time-lapses.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKJyXJ2KQFwMkFxxAcb6qqSfwEE3qFgve

I've already done the base shape and morphs and some minor editing. Now for some more ZBrush edits for muscle definition and facial feature definitions. Checkout my artstation WIP thread for almost step by step updates.

I am really tempted to do this contest, but I am setting up an archery business and we are lathing and milling parts for custom bows and arrows, so I dont think I would have enough time to do this. I love what you have been doing and the characters you have been making lately. If I do get back to game programing in Unreal, I will defiinately be purchasing some of your new outfits.

Thanks, Haratio. I haven't really done any morphs for about 2 years (Just some aliens and the chibi characters) The skingen characters i posted in the Competition - Stylish Digital Human Showcase Collection were some of my older morphs when I first started with iClone/Character creator. I just brought them back to life with the new skingen plugin. So I feel a little rusty making characters as I've been spending the majority of my time on cloth creation.

I've added a small amount of skingen to the Orc to get a feel of where the details are so I can tweak them in ZBrush a bit better. I'll try to be as detailed as I can in the portolio. For what I use and the steps I am taking. So far it's just been a few iterations of base morph tweaks and Zbrush tweaks.

I like your Orc also as it is different than the others. Its nice to have a choice with the characters. I haven't had time, and or made time to jump back into the CC3, and or iClone since this archery company thing. Once we get it rolling we will either be making to much money and be so busy that I will not have time, or if it stays steady, then perhaps I can get back into game programing, and making game characters again. At that point I think I will buy most of the outfits on the Store, and seek out your clothing. I might even ask for you to make some outfits/armor pieces and would pay commission for you to do so, if you have the time at that point.
I was learning MD9 and Z brush, but honestly, if I could afford to buy things from Daz and here as far as outfits, I can whip up the Characters, Minus special ones like lets say Dragons, and or Giant Spiders/Scorpions, but I could pay for someone to rig those for iClone/Unreal.
At this point when and if I get back to making the Game that I am envisioning I hope that I can pay for a lot of the content. Hell, I would even consider paying Programmers to make it work from my direction.
Well anyway, I am getting long winded here.
Keep on Keeping on, and once again. Love your Style, love your content. From one content developer to another. Peace Out, and keep up the clothing, Love the Bible/Midieval stuff. Haratio.

Ok, I've found some time and started working on my orc again.

Updates have been made to the portfolio https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nY4899

Just made some changes to the ears, fingernails, and built up a bit more muscle mass, and a bit of a slightly fat gut. And some slight face changes. I've almost finished with the character model and will be starting to create some custom armor for him soon. (More skin and texture details will be done towards the end)

Updates have been made to my portfolio today. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nY4899

Quick rundown.. Just made some edits to small details, like the knuckles, and prominent bones. And added some more muscle mass. Check out the blog for the full details.

I'm pretty sure I'm happy with the form of the character. So hopefully I can get into the clothing/armor etc..

Portfolio updated. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nY4899

I've refined the belt/waistcloth and set up my project in CC3 for texturing. This allows me to edit and update on the fly while getting a good look at the substances of the cloth. I've set up some base materials and textures to the belt/waistcloth.

Textures aren't final. I just needed a base in my head to see how everything would look overall. I'll start finishing off the rest of the clothing/armor next.

Looking great, Slayerazazel. Have you tried using the cloth dynamics in Zbrush? It can help when doing folding items like cloth. It's fairly easy to use, and there are brushes that work specifically with it.

Thanks Mythcons. And yeah I've used them a little in the belt cloth. Not much as I'm not wanting too much heavy folds as tough leather doesn't really fold much. I'll be using the cloth brushes here and there to add folds here and there, but I also add to the folds within substance painter.

Nice work, one thing that caught my eye however is the lack of thickness on the loin cloth. Leather is thick by nature. Maybe is there, but i cant see in in the renders. Keep up the great work.

Depth is indeed missing. The belt and cloth aren't entirely finished yet. But thank you for pointing it out, I may have forgotten to do it haha.

The great thing about substance painter is that I can just update the models in the active project. That's one of the best features to substance painter I think. So even though I'm at the substance part, it allows me to make changes to the mesh and UVs without having to start a new substance project.

There's some depth there now. Textures aren't final. I'll get the rest of the clothing/armor done before working on the finer details.

Test of how it looks in CC3 with the base materials. With CC3 render.

Creation of the bracers and test renders.

Reminder, this is a WIP and any models or textures are always subject to change.

I liked the look of the light armor Vambracers from the Warrior that came free with CC3. So I created a similar version with spikes and some under cloth that will have rips and tears and be pretty scruffed up when i do all the texture details later on. (Well that's the plan anyway... ) And I probably need to add the leather straps around the hand also.

I've modeled the Shoulder armor, armbands, and some earrings. Just need to do the boots and then I can delve deeper into the finer details of the armor/clothing. Holes, tears, stitching, etc.

(Also need to redo the skin textures as they were just placeholder while I created the armor, and that split at the top of his head is odd if I can't fix that I may just try to turn it into a scar or something)

It also looks like he has a lazy eye, I may or may not fix that. But some of the renders I have done have really shown it haha.

Some test iray renders.

Leg Armor.

I think that might do for the models, if I want anything else I'll just add it later. Time to delve into the finer details of the armor/clothing now. And then after that, I'll get working on finer details of the skin and face textures.

The turntable video for my Fantasy Ork Male

Really awesome work, what i would add, and this is just me being picky, because it called my attention to it.  On the close up of the face,  you can see the earrings hard edge penetration on the skin making them look not that well integrated, if you are going to keep those close-ups i would suggest adding,  either by paint on the normal map or displacement, some indentation as they go into the ear. Hope this helps. And again, overall you did a fantastic job.

Cheers,

Cris

Yeah, that was definitely on my mind also. But wasn't sure how to go about doing it. I tried with skin-gen but it just wasn't working. Thanks for the advice, I'll see what I can come up with. I'll have a go at the CC3 Substance painter UDIM workflow which I haven't really played around with yet. Luckily I haven't submitted yet.
By Slayerazazel - 6 Years Ago
I've done a little more skingen on the character. Plus I have sent him to substance painter UDIM for edits to the earings. Adding subtle holes/indentations which should help the earings look more natural and realistic. I did experiment with some face paint or scars and tattoos, but to me, I think it takes away from the detail of the character. So I have decided to go without any.
