Dear iClone and Unreal users,

Welcome back to our lab, and let's have a preview for our iClone Unreal Pipeline update in July!
Besides transfering characters, cameras, and lights, more highly-wished features will get supported in iClone 7.8, Unreal Live Link 1.2, and Auto Setup 1.1

Updated Features:
  • Shader Compatibility
Supporting latest Digital Human Shader for eye elements and SkinGen compatibility
  • Soft Cloth Physics
Transferring iClone Soft Cloth Physics and Collision Mesh to Unreal Engine, with compatible NVIDIA PhysX cloth effects. Those features are applicable both for FBX import and Live Link transfer.

  • Prop Transfer and Skin Bone Animation
Not only static props can be directly transferred from iClone to Unreal, props with skin bone animation can also Live Link to Unreal in realtime.
  • Update in iClone 7.8: SSS Shader for Accessories & Props
SSS shaders are enabled in iClone 7.8 for both props and accessories. You can find a new SSS Material Library which provides many translucent rendering such as jelly, glass, skin or soft plastics. Those SSS effects are also transferrable to Unreal Engine.

Hope you are excited for the coming updates!
For those who have not seen our latest warm up video, please check our SkinGen Video and Realistic Eyes preview, thanks!

These updates seem very good!!

Could someone please explain what is the ultimate purpose of UE live link?

As I understand it, if someone chooses to use it, they will be able to create and edit projects inside iClone as before (Avatars, props, cameras, lighting etc) and use Unreal only for rendering, taking advantage of the visual quality it offers.

Is this correct?

In UE4 it is still not "easily" possible to animate or change Character animations , you need a 3rd app for this , Iclone with Live-Link is one of the easiest way I know  to manipulate your Character Animations inside UE4.
You can export Characters from Unreal and convert them via 3dxchange to animate or manipulate them in IClone , Live-Linked to UE4. (Paragon Characters for example)

- There is a Blueprint Control Rig in Beta , but not that easy.

Interesting!

But what about all the other assets? Props, Cameras, Lighting, Terrain etc? Will all of these eventually be done inside iClone and we will use UE only for rendering? Or will we use iClone only for animating and do the rest of this stuff inside UE?

That's the part I don't understand.

Cameras and lighting from iclone can easily be ported over to Unreal via Livelink in real-time. Terrain and such would ideally be done in Unreal. You can import props via fbx currently but it’s a little hit and miss for textures. The update shows a fast prop import and it looks like you can animate them as well. You’ll also be able import non-CC based characters and animation via LL which is pretty cool. Curious how much better the native tenderer will be with SSS. Could be pretty awesome!

Depends on what you want to do. You can do your movie in IClone or in UE4 or in both and cut it in post.
For a movie with 50 Characters and big environments I would prefer UE4 , for the near shots or conversation shots inside a room I would prefer IClone.
Lights , Cams , Props ... could all be linked.
Wanne do a game?
Wanne do a toon movie?

As I said , it depends ... you have the utilities... but all this is useless without an idea ;-)

I am just happy to see that improvements to the native renderer have not been forgotten.

Thanks to everybody for the answers, they helped greatly!!

This video is awesome! Thanks for all the amazing advances!

I sincerely wish someone at Reallusion was given the task of “newbie proofing” their videos, though. So so so many Reallusion videos are impenetrable to new users and casual viewers. Smile

All it takes is a plain English explanation of each feature, ie. “What does this allow you to do”, and also a quick voiceover for every video. The VO-less ‘visual learning’ videos are the most useless that RL does - unless you ALREADY know what they mean (like many of us in this forum) and just want a quick refresher 😂

Hi Eric,
Yes, I find this update motivating to start using UDK as a rendering engine. Particularly the transfer of the  softcloth animation baked in the FBX format.
I hope there will be a tutorial that will focus on exporting in fbx format  because of my computer does not have enough  performance wich  lag and it creates dropframes using live link.

Reallusion team nailed it this time. Please dont delay the release of 7.8

Do we have a date for release -  I know the talk has been July but would be handy to know the exact date it drops - so that I can plan my month ahead and make sure I have allocated plenty of time to experiment when it arrives.
Extremely excited about this.

New here.

Am I right to assume the cloth physics system is being used for the hair as well? Or has hair physics (transferring to UE4) been implemented before already?

I am looking to buy a few content packs, whether hair physics are transferred over or not will change what I buy significantly
