Subway Car - Make it Different (Challenge?)

Couple of weeks ago I saw a subway project in Unreal by Charly Rama (which I liked a lot).
So I figured I'll make one natively in iClone and have you guys trying to make it better or just different (the project is enclosed at the end of this post). iClone v7.72 would require.

Create your own light scheme, atmosphere, add your own characters (replacing those you might not have a license for). But I suspect most have CC essentials so that should not be a problem.
Hopefully, one of those days we'd have better reflections and bugs fixed (such as those ugly stripes caused by soft shadows), ...etc.

The only favor I might ask, is that if you decide to spend some time, modify the project and post the outcome,
please post the project as well (use Dropbox or similar), so that everyone else could benefit from your knowledge and expertise.

Now there is a DH shaders, which are linked and you would most likely have to re-link them all as project gets opened.
Mine are located at: D:\Reallusion\Shared Templates\Digital_Human_Shader_Resource\CC3
Alternatively you may use SUBST command at command prompt and make a virtual drive D: pointing to the root of the Reallusion folder.
This way you would not have to re-link DH texture.

Anyway, here is a video and a project:

This f****ing awesome my friend!

I seriously doubt anyone could  make it better (including myself of course) :hehe:

Mind blowing Gurgen. :w00t:

This is not something that would be easy to beat. :cool::smooooth:

Wow, that's a nice "subway-scene"...
Especially what you did with that bottle! That's big cinema as regards prop animation.
It reminds me at several scenes in Berlins Subway,
where a bottle is surfing through the subway ;)
Few weeks ago, i had a drunk guy tilting his nearly full bottle while falling a sleep,
wetting the floor, woke up, drank some beer, fell asleep again, tilted, wetting the floor, woke up,
drank again, fell asleep and finally dropped the bottle, did not wake up anymore.
All passengers watched it floating and kinda smiled...
Except for the kick, never saw that in the tube.

Downloaded and fortunately, all my Reallusion content is on Drive D, no relinking needed...
But I really don't see big changes make that scene "better".
As I assume you are talking about the overall lighting/scene appearance.
I will have a look at it but probably won't challenge as I see no way to make this better...

Simply wonderfull work 4u2ges , great work
That I see is not only a great lighting and animation but , the movements of this bottle near the drunk guy are just wow.

And you present this great work with humility and not saying with superiority "yeah, look at my work, I can beat unreal ...." thank you :)

I'll try to work on this project but I think You've made it near the best (because perfection doesn't exist)
By Am7add9 - 5 Years Ago

imho i doubt anyone is going to do this challenge,
but if they do, it will be interesting to say the least.
 challenges are good to help grow, but they would also need honest feedback
also a challenge should start a bit less complex so it can go somewhere.

i basically started cgi doing photoshop battles in 1999 on worth1000, fark and a few others.

Nice to see the subway car being used in a fun scene. It's one of those many older assets that can be brought back to life as illustrated by 4u2ges.

I'm actually using the subway car in a current project, so I may have a look at this project to learn (and steal...:P).
By 4u2ges - 5 Years Ago
@3dtester, @wires
Thank you folks. Make it *better* has vague context.
I am sure there is also an artistic factor could be taken into consideration while amending the scene.
And also just make it different (see the end of this post).

@ toystorylab
Thank you. Now that is funny, I am glad I have not taken subway ride for a decade now, but I have a lots of memories of it from the past :)
Regarding the challenge, please also see the end of the post.

@charly Rama
Thank you. Indeed, I really did not make the scene to challenge you. You did very fine job back then and there are clear advantages of Unreal over iClone, which simply could not be matched no matter how you'd try.
I tried to do my best to squeeze the best out of iClone hopping someone would have better ideas on how to setup the atmosphere.

@ Am7add9
Actually the scene is not that much complex. Lights scheme is pretty much straightforward flavored by the GI and basic iClone post Effects.
Most of the time was taken to create details, - morphs, bottle fracture, car materials and mesh rebuilt in some parts.

@aminagic
Thank you. I probably could have gone out and got something more modern.
But I kind like this car for simplicity (though I had to customize it to some degree). I'd be glad if it helps you :)

-----------------
So here is another option. Just make a short sequel.  Like for instance:
People are panicking as some zombie or monster walks in. But instead of assaulting,
he's just harassing them for tickets - "tickets please, tickets", or wakes up Zane, or writing a citation to Soccer Mom for breaking a bottle.
Or train stops and most lights go out. God knows what might have happened then :).
Or train goes out of the tube to the *open* (bridge with planes/billboards?) and bright sun would shine through... etc, etc...

The whole clip is great, but what I liked the most - camera movement and the bottle!
Thanks!
By nealtucker - 5 Years Ago
42uges, great animation, thanks for sharing,
I did download it to try it out and although it had the watermark it was still fun.
Only thing I found and not sure if others have tested it out but on my system, with 1080ti I found it very sluggish, to work on this I would need to hide avatars etc, I know it's not a deal-breaker as I have done this with some of my projects but it just shows how......dare I say......Unreal and my system could probably handle this with ease? or would it suffer just as bad with the same amount of animated avatars?
By 4u2ges - 5 Years Ago
@ampertox
Thank you. For camera I use dummy objects where I need extreme smooth turns and my simple shaky script (attached) for realism.

@nealtucker
Thank you. You can look for the purple signature in Scene Manager to figure what is causing watermarks.
I suspect some items of clothing and hair you do not have a license for (you may replace those with your own appropriate garments and hair to have watermarks go away).
Now, performance. I know iClone is not the faster real time engine. Try to workaround a bit.
Uncheck "Environmental Reflections" and "Smooth Mesh" (I have both coming heavy in the project) to give a little performance boost.
And set texture to 1024x1024, or so to free up GPU RAM

I'm working on some version of this -- got a bit sidetracked by examining all you did here, Mr. G, as it was pretty awesome.

I'll see if I can finish tomorrow.
By thedirector1974 - 5 Years Ago
Thumbs up.
i really like the bottle animation. It's close to realism. Sadly I can't say this for the human animation and the camera movement. Both could be done better, but I don't know it this is "finished" thing, so just saying ...

Greetings, Direx
By gordryd - 5 Years Ago
Nice job!  I particularly like Zane breathing while he sleeps, since this is one thing sorely lacking from iClone's 'automatic' functions (actually, I guess the only one is 'blinking').  Any tips on how you did that?
By 4u2ges - 5 Years Ago
@sjonesdc
Thank you, Enjoy!

@Kelleytoons
Thank you Mike. Can't wait ;)

@thedirector1974
Thank you Direx, but there is no start, or finish. I made it mostly to display the atmosphere. And yes, the bottle I probably spent most of the time with :)

@gordryd
Thank you. Breath is a morph. This can be easily done in CC and exported as iAvatar, and then applied in Morph Creator.
But I prefer to do it in Blender, as it gives me more control over mesh. It literally takes 5-10 min once you get a hang of it (given characters' cloth is errors free).
And then in iClone, after you made one breath cycle, save it as Motion+ (morph only), reapply and extend for as long as you wish (must be applied to the same character with the same cloth though).

This is my method of making a breath morph.

Fantastic scene loved the atmosphere and the lighting if I can find the time I will try the challenge.

This is awesome!! I'm actually quite sure that I can't top this, but I'm going to take your suggestion, and try to create a continuation/sequel to your project. I'm currently working on it as we speak. And if you don't mind, because the direction that I'm taking it, I would like to replace all of the characters with Stylized characters, make it sort of toony! LOL :D I'm keeping your version authentic though, as I'm going to record your piece along with my finale to make it a complete sequence. :D

To respond on those who experienced the Watermark, as I did, just remove/replace the hair with something else. I used one of the Party_Fun hairstyles just for the scene. :D  Send "Soccer Mom" (the woman who kicks the bottle) into character into CC, and just remove/replace the hair.

I'll post as soon as I finish. This is actually some pretty good stuff here. As far as realism in movement is concerned, if it's Stylized based/Cartoon based, then it can be forgiven for not having such detailed movement and fluency, as well as being the perfect cover up, keeping the critics from hitting you so harshly. Hopefully, it will steer them away from picking at the animation so much, and just concentrate on the delivery and entertainment value of the concept. :D

I do not mind at all. Looking forward!

Finally I can show what I used the "Subway Car Scene" for...
T.H.A.N.X. again to 4u2ges for providing his project!

You are welcome Toystory.
Thank you for participating. Very well done!
Lots of fun! ;)
By 3DChick - 5 Years Ago
Hi all,
I saw this fun project and decided to play with it, too. Mine is not as wonderful as ToyStoryLab's interpretation--nothing new, really. I was in a Hallloween mood, and changed the characters to some off my "monster" characters, tweaked the lighting, and messed with the subway itself to try to invoke a futuristic feel. The only "story" change is a slightly different focus, which I changed the one camera and the signage to highlight.

And, as requested in the original post, here's a dropbox link to my version. I put the characters back to stock, to avoid the dreaded watermark, but I left my skin on buffed out Zane and on the "demonic" housewife--no idea if that will come through or not. This has my lighting and settings. I tried to name or rename what I changed (lights and characters), so it would be clear, but ??? no idea if it will.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/xojp7vl9zz26f30/SUBWAY_CAR.zip?dl=0. Let me know if that somehow doesn't work...

At any rate, this was super fun--I tend to keep doing different versions of the same things over and over again, so it was great to play with something new (without having to think it up first!).
By 4u2ges - 5 Years Ago
Hey nelm2010. Thank you for taking time and making Subway Car from hell :)
Great effort!
Unfortunately, when I use your link to download the project, it leads me to the original Car project.
Did you submit original project by mistake? Or there is something wrong with my browser cache?
I actually tried a couple of different browsers.

Cool.. Thanks.  ;)
By 3DChick - 5 Years Ago
I probably did link the wrong file. I was uploading both, one to archive and one to share. I will check and see what I find...But I have to be on my Windows to do that, so it'll be a bit...
By 3DChick - 5 Years Ago
So...the bad news is I apparently only archived the original, not my version, and I was in a disk-cleanup frenzy (I only have 1tb, and no, I never thought I'd say "only" to a terabyte of storage), so I deleted it. Sad

So, I'll try to recall what I did:
Aside from changing the textures to make them more "sci-fi" colors, I turned off most of the overhead spotlights, keeping only those that highlighted the characters, and changed the color tone of each to sort of go with the signage. I made another GI plane for the outside (more passing lights), and changed the window reflection to something (????) so make it look more like a cityscape. Pretty sure I have a point light on the camera end, and a dimmer, bluer one toward the far end of the car (for ambient). The IBL would be on very low, probably 3 but maybe (max) 10. The GI anchor follows the camera, but isn't linked. I put one more point light (very small range) into the bottle, attached it, and added more shininess to the bottle (although I don't remember how). Then keyframed that light to flare up when it broke. I made the dark flashes more flickery and added the fade in at the beginning to go with the end--I think that was in Effects? I also added a LUT that wasn't there originally, but don't remember which one, now, (grrr), to give it more of the sci-fi feel.

I took out much of the signage or changed the images on the signs to simplify the visuals, and made the transparent posters in Affinity, set to a low glow. And tweaked the camera to show the one poster before going down to look at Drunken Zane.

Overall, my settings are GI voxels on 32, maxed out with reduce light flicker and 2048 res on all shadows, with reduce shadow flicker on. No SS but high quality DOF on, rendered as mp4 in 1080. I remember it took longer than I'm used to to render, maybe 30-40 minutes? No post other than adding the title.

I wish I remembered better what all I did, but I made it several weeks ago, then got busy and forgot to post it until I saw the recent one.

Sorry about losing mine--it's experiences like this that encourage my digital hoarding, sigh.

No worries Nicole. Thanks for the description.
I did not see that one with the bottle explosion was coming. Nice touch - bottle broke - genie escaped. Now I know it was a point light :)
