PopcornFX v2?

So, I spoke with a developer at PersistantStudios and they stated they have released v2 a few months back.  When will iClone 7 upgrade from v1.01 to v2.  Because you can not currently use it in UE 4.24 since they are no longer supporting or allowing the download of lower versions from the Launcher.  Currently, PopcornFX doesn't work in I-Ray nor does it seem like it will be a priority to have it work.  Will this be uploaded to the new version?  Also, after speaking with the developer her stated that you can download the actual editor and possible import it into the new v2 editor and it will convert but it is basically a work around that may or may not work but it has to be in package form.

Hi... The 2020 Roadmap is currently being finalised and will be published soon. This will reveal our software/plugins upgrade plans so do keep a look out for that.
By toystorylab - 6 Years Ago
Hm, does this sound like there finally gone be an update on Popcorn?
Would be great...
By Peter (RL) - 6 Years Ago
Unfortunately it has been confirmed that there are no immediate plans to update PopcornFX.

So, this is disappointing.  Another plugin that was hyped and then basically abandoned, kinda like I-Ray which is useless if you do any partical effects and 600 materials that can't be used.  Kind of feels like a trend to be honest.  Which is funny since you released the sequencer.
By TopOneTone - 6 Years Ago
I just don’t know how to adequately express how disappointing this is. Not only do I feel conned yet again by Reallusion’s “make a quick buck and walk away” strategy, but the fact that they can abandon a plugin that is actually useful and impactful to all iclone animators in favour of focussing on trying to gain credibility with the smaller segment of “game developers” says so much about Reallusion’s disinterest in customer loyalty.
I honestly felt that with the introduction of Popcorn fx the standard of animation across the iclone community took a big leap forward and I recognised that viewers were seeing these effects as standout elements in the production that gave it a more professional look. I also began to see industry people being more receptive to the idea that iclone had advanced beyond the toy / game “look” that they had previously been so dismissive of. I was so excited that we were moving into an era where I (based on Reallusion’s hype) believed there was a commitment to making iclone a commercial standard animation solution.

The lack of insight by Reallusion into the importance high quality effects for animators and the current focus on game development is a major disconnect with its user base and leads me to believe I need to focus on finding solutions elsewhere.
Would welcome any recommendations from the group.

For me the big problem of popcorn  it's prohibited sale of particles. Some users unterstund how the editor works and  I am sure they could sell them which would give a serious credible boost.
The V1 version of the editor is difficult to understand and the V2 version is worse.
Seriously how want to manage this kind of workflow????

yes I was one of them when I worked with the "Shake" compositing software
but I only did that 8 hours a day because it's too specialized.
This kind of worklow is not for one man band . Reallusion create tools for one man band , popcorn is not for this kind of workflow that's why
Reallusion implemented very well popcorn particle in a easy way to manage in Iclone. And That's why they must open the store for specialists in particles
creation.

Raxel_67....Ohherr, I think many of us feel the same so some extent, and like you say, marketing seems to be driving the ship and not the development team. the SIMPLE economic fact is that if Realusion does not satisfy it's user's needs then the users will spend their money elsewhere...Like me. I know we keep coming back to Unreal but it's FREE and if you get a bug then oh well I cannot complain too much as you just roll back to another version with no problem.
The Realusion and Unreal business models are very different. Realusion needs us to keep buying their stuff and it only works if it delivers the stuff and features that we want which at this point is sadly lacking.
Unreal 3D engine and the huge amount of HQ assets are FREE because they get there funding from Games, (Epic Games) and game makers..like the very successful FORTNITE, they are giving you everything NOW so maybe one day you will make enough money to give back...how great is that!
With this amount of funding and enthusiasm the company has, I believe it is going to be unstoppable, and make no mistake they are very actively working on their animation process tools so look out iClone.
Oh and another iClone dropped product and opportunity I was Realy looking forward to was the MOCHA Camera tracker, Oh well, what with Unreal being Free, purchasing the Mocha camera tracking software does not seem a bad investment at this point.
Cheers

That's sad news. Not sure why RL thinks there is no need for that
At least, allow others to develop and sell, as "mtakerkart" states!

@raxel_67
Sure, there are several things I am unhappy with,
but I don't think it is helpfull to become abusive :pinch:
The workaround with https://pcon-planner.com to convert skp to FBX
and import it directly via iClone AND get sub-props automatically works fine!
Even faster than the old way... So, no need to rant...
And I always had good experiences with "RL support".
IF you contact them in the way you wrote here, I guess you get back what you sow.
So, @ RL, please allow developers to create us more PopcornFX!
Member Kevin L did a nice "Fluid Factory", but probably never got the chance to sell it!

I am mostly happy with iClone and RL in general, although I am disappointed with the lack of support for new versions of PopcornFX.  I won't be running to Unreal as I don't see that as a viable option. I have too much time and money invested to start all over.

In other words, I have nothing I can threat RL with: "do this or else!"...

Still, I do feel that lately there is far more responsiveness to cater to the needs of those that use Unreal than to those that choose to work within iClone. That makes me sad...:crying:
By Kelleytoons - 6 Years Ago
Yes, I feel much the same as Job -- would have been great to see even just a *little* more support/effort for Popcorn FX.  Clearly the marketers have decided there is no money to be made there.

And the emphasis on Unreal is just... (dare I say it?)... unreal.  I think RL may be shooting themselves in the foot over this, as more and more folks will move away to Unreal as THOSE folks develop animation tools to rival or surpass iClone.  And THEN where does that leave RL?  Pretty screwed.

They need to develop their core product, but luckily I have GREAT hopes we are going to see wonderful things in iClone 8.  The roadmap ought to put all of our minds at rest when we see it.  If RL does the same sorts of wonderful things they've shown they can do with CC3/Headshot inside of the newest iClone release we should ALL be happy.  I'm optimistic.
By nealtucker - 6 Years Ago
I agree Kelley, I do hope RL take notice and work to deliver on what WE really want like, lighting, volumetrics, better cameras, etc, etc, they seem to be pushing the 2D stuff at the moment which is good if you are into that but me. not so much at this time, I did support RL and purchase CA4 for when I feel a project needs it as it is very good.

They just announced their 2D roadmap so right at the moment it seems like they are focused on it, but next week they will announce their 3D one and, again, I'm confident we will see some wonderful stuff.  After that happens then folks can start to complain specifically about things (in some ways it's unfortunate that Pete spilled the beans about Popcorn in advance of that roadmap.  But I understand the pressures RL is under -- we both WANT information and then we get angry when they provide it, if it isn't what we wanted to hear.  COMPLETE full disclosure would help, but it's almost impossible for any company to do that.

And, to be clear, I'm not at all happy about Popcorn's abandonment either.  I use it all the time, it's essential, and even if, say, atmospherics are provided in 8 (which I think is likely) it won't do away with the need for more particle FX inside of iClone.  As always, and I can't say it enough, RL's desire to please the Unreal crowd is EXTREMELY short-sighted.  We all know Unreal is working on animation tools, so iClone will become just a stepping stone that will soon be bypassed.  RL needs to concentrate on the folks who want and use the core product and, at least for now, say they've done enough for UnReal (basically the way they've said they've done enough for particle FX).  Move on and help your folks who use this as their one and only animation tool and they will be successful.  Any other path will lead to doom (and that means Very Bad Things for all of us who love the products).

This video to show what I could accomplish without understanding much the  Popcorn editor.
Everything is configurable, animable and I managed to understand how the Atlas map creator works
to make sprites of 120 images instead of the 32 imposed by the popcorn superTools pack.
it would be so simple for a specialist to sell us particles on request with UDk or Unity examples....

For me, I do not consider Popcorn as abandoned because it still works in Iclone but rather as restricted.
This is the only function in the reallusion world that is prohibited for sale. An update for the V 2.0 editor would complicate matters
even more because the tutorials are really not for beginners and the workflow is more complicated than the v1.
RL has certainly acquired new users who are game developers with the CC3 but for the animation there are changes
that are not to be overlooked in the game world. Indeed Epic game support Blender today,
they just released a Blender's direct bridge to Unreal which is an exact copy of RL's live link.
In addition I just received an email from Rokoko of the blender plugin with face animation.
It is exactly the same structure as the animation suite of Iclone. The advantage of Iclone is that it is learned much faster,
the disadvantage is that the Iclone suite is not free, moreover it is a clientele of developers therefore there're users who know very well blender
and the workflow of unreal.
We, the "developers" who use Iclone for movie will always be there as long as Reallusion will evolve Iclone.  I still haven't seen an application as efficient
as Iclone for realizing CG animations in real time as easily.  I know that Game developers are a very versatile clientele.
It may be anecdotal but Steam sells a new Chinese application which directly competes with Iclone but this is only version 1.0: Inva3D

Thank you Kelleytoons ! Yes there're all V1.12 they are derived from the editor examples ; I had help from Jeff Little , He changed the script wich drive the Atlas map from the "Simple Explosion" from the editor
with a 64x64 map I sended him. The particles with frozen velocity at 1:07 on the video is a template I bought from Persistent Studio (300 $!!!).

Just a reminder with the selling particles :
I asked the 2/6/2018 with a ticket support for selling particles. The answer was:
Dear Marc,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes. We will open the ipkfx format in Marketplace in the future after iClone 7.3 or 7.4 patch.

Please feel free to let us know if you have any further questions.

Best Regards
Jollen
Technical Support
Reallusion Inc.

So I asked again the  the 25th december 2018 , I had an answer from Kai :
"We will not offer popcronFX IPFX for sale on the Marketplace yet due to the following reason:  Currently a IPFX from Popcorn Library 40 can be used in iClone without PopcornFX plug-in.  However, if user use the Super Tools in PopcornFX plug-in create a IPFX (like Learning Sample 50), than the user will need to have plug-in to use it.  So if we open selling IPFX in Marketplace, it may cause confusion because some can be used without plug-in and some can not."

So today I'm not allowed to sell any Iclone particles. May I can sell with the popcorn format so as not to infringe the EULA but as Kai said this requires the buyer to have the popcorn plugin to import it into Iclone.
Furthermore I'm really not an expert to provide technical support. I will wait for the Iclone 2020 roadmap to see if Reallusion will change anything of this inconsistency.
I hope this video will motivate RL to change things.

Wow Mtakerkart that some pretty impressive fx you have created in that video. I keep telling myself I need to dive in to learn how to use the Popcorn Fx editor and this video has certainly inspired me to have a go.
Thanks,
Tony

Since they are not doing anything with Popcorn for 2020 I doubt the roadmap will clarify things any.

And I don't need support (and own the plugin as well) -- again, if you want a few bucks, contact me privately (others might do the same to you).  I'd buy whatever you have just on the basis of the video (I'm too old to have much time left for waiting.  Sigh).

Hello Kelleytoons,

The 3D Team is also preparing announcements and now we are checking and proofreading of our materials.
Really appreciate everyone's feedback on iClone, and we are hoping we can get everything ready and update you next week.
Stay tuned!

Hi ERIC ,

I thought we would have seen Iclone's 2020 roadmap this week.
Any news ?
By Eric C (RL) - 6 Years Ago
Hi mtakerkart,

There was some delay due to double-checking development schedule.
We are planning to release them by end of February (this week).
Sorry for the wait and thanks for your patience, we know you have been waiting!

Thank you Eric for the answer.

Just to clarify can I create popcornfx v2 in their editor and import them into iclone as popcornfx effects?  Or do I have to use the editor in iClone?
By jlittle - 6 Years Ago
PopcornFX v2 files are not compatible with iClone.
You can use the PopcornFX v1.12 editor to create effects that can be imported into iClone using the PopcornFX plugin.
Otherwise, you have to using the iClone tools.

Jeff

Thanks.  Do you know if reallusion is going to upgrade to v2?
By jlittle - 6 Years Ago
For now they have no plans on updating to PopcornFX v2.
Also, as it stands we can't even sell PopcornFX items in the market place.
It seems they have abandon it for the near future and possibly beyond.

Particle Illusion (now owned by Boris FX) has a free stand-alone version available for video effects (sim to After Effects) which you can download HERE.
